- They brought a 11 pound baby boy up
out of the mines on New Year day and gave
it to Dr. EVERETT
- At Forksville on Dec. 29, 1878, Joseph
and Mary WHITLEY celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary.
- Morton MC MICHAEL died in Philadelphia
on Monday
- An infant child of Mrs. KEENEY, living
in Brooklyn, froze to death while
sleeping beside its mother on Saturday
morning.
- Mrs. Lydia HOTTENSTEIN died from a
stroke of palsy, on Sunday and was buried
at Overton yesterday. She was 81 years, 9
months and 10 days. She was born in
Lehigh Co. and came to Overton in 1829.
Her husband with whom she had lived
happily for about 60 years, six of her
children, twenty grand children and four
great grandchildren were present at the
funeral services.
- Austin OLIVER and Miss Louie MASE,
both of Wilmot were made one by Esq.
Schock after an oyster supper at Mrs. M.
C. Schock's on Christmas.
Caroline
SHULTZ, of Tioga Co., died in Charleston
Twp, at the age of 104 years, 2 months
and 8 days. She emigrated to this country
from Saxony where she was born in Oct.
1774.
- Dr. S. T. BROOKS, was found dead in
his room at Greenville, IL, Friday
morning with one hand roasted and a large
hole burned in the floor. Appearances
indicate the explosion of his lamp. But
the fire had gone out, evidently for the
want of air. The doctor had numerous
friends and relations at the East.
16 Jan. 1879
- Archie HUNTER was killed instantly in
the mines at Barclay on the 7th. The
accident was caused by a "fall of
rock," which fell on Hunter's head,
breaking his neck and killing him
instantly. Hunter was 45 years of age. He
leaves a wife and 6 children, the oldest
being only 13 years of age.
- Mrs. Dinah EDGAR, of Davidson died
- Jessee K. PRYOR, died in Mauch Chunk
this week. He was a journeyman.
- Jonathan WEBSTER died at his residence
in Elkland, on Jan. 3rd, in 71st year of
his age. He was born in England, and came
to this country when a young man, lived
for some time in Philadelphia, White Deer
Creek and came to Elkland 42 years ago.
In the rebellion he lost two sons, one of
them died some time after returning home
from the effects of hardship endured
while in the army. He was buried on Jan.
5th, on his farm in the family burying
ground, services were held at the Bethel
school house.

NORTON, of Forks Twp., died 6 Dec. 1878,
aged 7 years
- Flassie, infant child of Frank and
Martha GREEN, of Forks Twp., died Jan.
10th
- Hattie C., infant daughter of G. A.
and Emily MC ILVAIN, of Forks Twp., died
Jan. 17th
- The remains of Mrs. POWELL who died in
Towanda were brought here on Friday and
burial was in the Catholic Cemetery.
- On Jan. 23rd, Lantz VANDERPOOL, aged
between 19 and 20 went to the barn after
dinner to hitch up his team. He was
accompanied by Jacob MANN, when they got
to wrestling, Lantz fell under the front
of the horse, when the horse began to
rear and came down with his whole force
with his fore feet on the forehead of
Lantz and stamped out his brains so that
they were scattered all over his face.
Dr. Frank Terry was immediately sent for,
but when he came Lantz was so far gone
that there was hopes for him (??) He died
that afternoon at 5 o'clock. His remains
were buried on the 25th in the Terrytown
Cemetery.

Feb. 1879
- Daniel BAHR married a lady of Columbia
Co. on Saturday last
- Joseph EBERLIN, of Wilmot and Miss
Sevilla S. FREY, married at the residence
of the bride's parents in Cherry Twp.,
Sullivan Co., by Rev. Lewis Smith on the
2nd inst.
- George MURPHY, , whose one hundredth
birthday was celebrated at Sheshequin
last Sept., died on the 27th ult. He was
born on the banks of the Delaware river,
NJ side, in a Mr. De Pew's barn on 30
Sept. 1778. His mother, was a sister of
Judge Obadiah GORE, and was at the
Massacre of Wyoming in July previous,
escaped across the mountains to where
George was born. At the age of 7 years,
he came to Sheshequin to live with his
uncle, Judge GORE. He was the first mail
carrier on the route from Wyoming to
Canandaigua, going through on horseback,
a distance of 200 miles.
- Westward Ho!! Monday morning eight
families left from the Dushore depot to
make new homes in the far west. WE append
the names as far as can be called to
mind: Wm. BENNETT, wife and 6 children;
George SOLLINGER, wife and 4 children;
John REYNOLDS, wife and 4 children -
destination, Goldendale, Washington
Territory. Dexter CONKLIN, wife and 3
children; John CONKLIN, wife and 3
children; E. MC KEEBY, wife and 3
children; William DONEGAN and wife;
Michael OWEN and wife - destination,
Cawker? City, Kansas.
- It is rumored that Frank F. DRAKE and
Miss Effie CLARK were married at Laporte
some day this week.
- Wilmot - Mrs. Prince BISMARK, of
Terrytown, has a little son which is
supposed to be named after the scribe,
viz: P. B.

- Watson FAWCETT and Miss Ada BEDFORD,
both of Campbellsville, Sullivan Co.,
married at the W. M. Parsonage, Millview,
Jan. 30th, by Rev. S. Bedford

- Mary, dau. of Charles and Louisa
KUBNLE, of Wilmot, died on 12th inst.,
aged 12 years, 9 months and 17 days
- North Mountain - On Feb. 17th, a
little daughter of G. W. RISHEL, caught
fire while her mother was out of the
house and before assistance arrived the
clothes of the child were nearly
consumed. The injuries received were
fatal. After much suffering she died on
Tuesday morning about 1 o'clock
