  • Philip A. HARVEY, of Centralia and Mrs. Emma S. HALL, of Monroeton, married at the Presbyterian Parsonage, Jan. 4th by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • Will H. FINCH died at the residence of his brother in law, S. F. COLT Jr., in this place on Thursday evening the 6th inst. His remains were taken to Laporte for interment on Saturday. He was buried with the honors of the I. O. of O. F.
  • Fox Center - James, only son of John and Mary WILLIAMS, aged 6 years died.
  • Fox Center - Evert S. WILLIAMS, of Fox Center married Miss Clara AYERS, of Canton - no date of marriage

  • Mrs. Mary C. SCHOCK, only daughter of Daniel HUNSINGER, organized a party for her mother's 56th birthday on Jan. 6th, with a gathering of children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. And again they met at the house of Elizabeth HUNSINGER, (commonly known as grand mother) on Jan. 12th in honor of her 85th birthday….they party proceeded to the residence of her son, Alfred, nearby. Grandmother HUNSINGER is the oldest person in Colley Twp., Her maiden name was Elizabeth RUPERT, born 12 Jan. 1796 in Heidleberg Twp., Northampton Co., married John HUNSINGER in 1813 in Sugar Loaf Twp., Luzerne Co. They resided there until 1829 when they came to the place where Seeman's Hotel now stands on the Loyal Sock. In 1830 they moved in to what is now known as Lee Settlement, then a dense unbroken wilderness and here they lived until 1848 when they came to Colley (then Cherry). Afterwards they went to Wilmot, Bradford Co., but returned to Colley in 1860. Her husband died in the fall of 1863, her children were all married at the time. At present she has seven children living, forty-one grandchildren and forty-five great grandchildren. Caroline, her oldest daughter married Wilson POTTER, Ester the Rev. C. S. EARLE and Margaret Ira STEEL. Some of the names of the great grandchildren are Pritchard, Potter, Winslow, Abbot, Brown, Earle, Oliphant, Estell, Schock and others.
  • William Hiram, only son of C. C. FINCH, Esq. and Anna M. FINCH (nee BRADBURY) died. He was born at Laporte, on June 11th, 1856 and died Jan. 6th, aged 24 years, 6 months and 25 days.
  • J. Bedford MOSIER and Miss Sarah CARNEY, both of Valley Spring's Dakota, married at Swan Falls, Dakota Territory on Nov. 16th, 1880 by Rev. J. H. McLaney
  • John VAUGHN, a farmer in good circumstances living in Mehoopany Twp., Wyoming Co., on the line of the LVRR. His family consisted of himself, wife and small child. For some time his health has been poor. He went out to milk as usual yesterday morning and after an hour had passed and he had not returned, he was searched for and found dead in his barn having hanged himself to a beam therein. The sickness that he was suffering causing him to be very much depressed, is given as the reason why, in a moment when he was not entirely accountable for his actions, he took his own life ("Elmira Free Press")

  • David ABRAMS, an old and respected citizen of Wilmot Twp., Bradford Co., died at the residence of his son, David on Sunday last. He came to Wilmot when it was almost an unbroken forest, cleared up a farm and resided there until his death. He was about 80 years of age.

  • Morris SULLIVAN, a resident of Albany Twp., died on Tuesday last, he was about 80 years of age
  • Samuel COBB, a prominent farmer of Troy dropped dead while engaged sawing wood with a machine on Tuesday.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Lewis ZANER, celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary with a surprise party. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. COX and daughter Ella; Mr. and Mrs. D. E. DEIFFENBACH and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Adam H. ZANER and daughter, Amanda and sons, Jerome and Nelson; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis KINSLEY; Miss Hattie ZANER; Miss Mary B. THOMPSON and others. Mr. and Mrs. ZANER are now aged respectively 76 and 79 years, and were married in Briar Creek Twp., Columbia Co., Jan. 25th 1825, and came to Cherry where they now reside on 26 March 1828.

    9 Feb. 1881

  • New Salem - Mrs. Eliza WARREN who lived with her son in law, E. M. FROST, died on Sunday, Jan. 29th. The funeral services were held at Forksville on Feb. 1st.
  • New Salem - Frank MAY'S household rejoices in the advent of a daughter
  • James LADDIN, of Schuylkill Co., and Miss Alice MOONEY, of Cherry, married on Feb. 3rd, at St. Basil's Church, Dushore by Rev. M. I. O'Reilly
  • Frank MILLER and Miss Ella NORTHROP, both of Towanda, married at the Hinman House, Monroeton, on Feb. 3rd, by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • A son of Matthew MC KERNAN, of Albany Twp., had his hand caught in the cogs of a feed cutter on Monday, several of his fingers were badly torn and bruised rendering amputation necessary. The operation was performed by Dr. WADELL.
  • John NEVIL, formerly a resident of Forks Twp., was killed instantly at Hillsgrove on Thursday last. John and Mr. BURTRELL were chopping down trees on the land of Richard BIDDLE. A tree which had been cut off lodged against another, causing a part of the top to break off, which in falling struck John on the forehead with the above fatal result. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. His remains were brought to Cherry for interment, funeral services were held at Germany Church on Saturday.

    24 Feb. 1881

  • The family of the unfortunate man, John NEVIL, who was killed by the falling tree on Feb. 3rd, was kindly remembered by their neighbors in Hillsgrove a few days ago by a very generous donation of goods and cash amounting to over $50.
  • The body of John PENROSE, 24 years old, how had been missing since Christmas night was disclosed on Saturday by the melting snow in the meadow within 100 yards of his father's house, in Goshen Twp., a mile from West Chester. The young man had been sleighing with his sister, and leaving her at the house, went to the barn to put the horse away, and was never again seen alive, notwithstanding a close and continuous search. It is supposed that the was kicked by the horse, and in his bewilderment from the effects lost his way, fell on his face in the snow and was suffocated, and next day his body was buried beneath a deep snow.

  • Portis NORTHROP and Miss Nancy A. COX, both of Monroeton, married at the Presbyterian Parsonage, Monroeton, Feb. 20th by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • Truman F. LANDON, of Forksville and Miss Sarah A. HARTZIG, married at the bride's home, Dushore, on Feb. 20th by Rev. B. F. Keller
  • Geo. STREBY and Miss Mary WOODLEY, both of Overton, married at Overton on 22nd Feb., by Rev. P. S. Kohler
  • Elder D. D. GRAY, a Baptist Minister, well known in Northern Pennsylvania, died at Laceyville, Wyoming Co., on the 9th inst.
  • The remains of Mr. BRAGGER, of Thornedale, were buried in a casket furnished by Philip TUBACH.
  • Eugene, son of Hugh GILLIGAN, of Forks Twp., was instantly killed on Wednesday the 16th inst., in Shippen Twp., Cameron Co., while at work near the foot of a log slide, by being struck by a log which came down the slide. The deceased was about 22 years of age. His remains were brought to Dushore for interment on Monday.
  • S. L. THOMPSON, for the past three years in charge of the mill near Cherry Mills, will be leaving for his former home at Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

    3 March 1881

  • Mrs. H. H. INGHAM, of Monroeton, died on Sunday last, of blood poisoning contracted while she was taking care of her niece, Mollie BOWMAN, who was ill of scarlet fever. In washing the napkin with which she had wiped the saliva from her niece's mouth the virus was absorbed through a slight scratch on her finger. ("Towanda Journal")
  • James HELLER, aged about 75 years, formerly a resident of Penn Twp., died one day this week very suddenly. He was last seen alive by someone driving along the road, who remarked that he was to old a man to be chopping wood, and that he ought to make a wood frolic. The old gentleman replied that if he lived until next winter he would do so. Half an hour afterward, he was found dead upon the wood pile. ("Hughesville Enterprise") Anton HAAS has been doing a very sensible thing, viz: taking unto himself a wife.
  • Mrs. Bridget FARRELL, died at the residence of her son, James FARRELL, in Cherry Twp., on Thursday last, aged 73 years. She was the mother of: Thomas, John H., James and Ambrose. Funeral was held on Saturday.
  • Anton HAAS to Mrs. Henrietta HAAS, both of Dushore, at Dushore on Feb. 27th, by Rev. Father Kaier
  • Charles L. WOODBURN and Miss Henrietta ALLEN, both of Wysox, married at the Presbyterian Parsonage, Monroeton, Feb. 27 by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • Mrs. Mary, wife of William L. GIBBS, of Stevensville, Bradford Co., died in Forks Twp., on Feb. 17th, aged 26 years and 6 months. She was the youngest daughter of Powell and Sarah P. BIRD, of Forks Twp., and died from consumption. She leaves a husband and two little boys.
  • Mrs. David ABRANS; widow of David who died Jan. 29th; died at the residence of her son, David, in Wilmot Twp. on Friday last. She had been an invalid for a n umber of years. One of her sons, E. T., is a resident of Dushore.
  • Walter T. PARDOE and family, of Elkland Twp. are about to remove to the far west.
  • Mrs. John YONKIN, an old resident of Cherry Twp., died on March 1st, aged 72 years. March 1st was the 48th anniversary of the wedding day of Mr. and Mrs. YONKIN. Funeral services will be on Thursday at Thrasher Church.

    10 March 1881

  • Joseph E. SANDS, died in Philadelphia on Feb. 24th. He was in business with his son, Charles L., and had gone to the city to purchase new machinery for their woolen mill at Mordansville. While on Vine Street he was seized with illness and stepping into a place of business, fell dead. The body reached here on Saturday morning and funeral took place on Sunday. The Masonic ceremony was also used. Burial took place at the Mc Henry burying ground in Orange Twp. Joseph was born at Brown's Mill, Mifflin Twp., 11 July 1811. His father removed with his family to Briarcreek where Joseph learned his trade. He subsequently lived in Bradford Co. for a time, and returned to this county and lived in Greenwood, where he married in 1835 to Esther LUNDY. In 1858 he removed to Mordansville where he engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods and continued in that business until the time of his death. In 1875 he was elected county commissioner by the Republicans. His widow and 7 sons and 1 daughter survive, all of whom live in this county except the youngest son, Joseph who is a leading business man of Bowling Green, Ohio.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Rush J. THOMSON celebrated their sixth anniversary on the 9th inst.
  • William BUFFUM, a merchant of Friendsville, PA, committed suicide on Thursday morning last by shooting himself through the heart. The deceased leaves a wife and four children.
  • Terry Town -: Mrs. L. C. JACOBY died on Feb. 11th.
  • Terry Town - Mrs. Sarah REINHART, of New Era, died Feb. 17th.
  • Terry Town - James MANN, who was working for Horton Brothers, died Feb. 25th, after an illness of four days, he was buried in the Terrytown Cemetery. Under the auspices of the I. O. O. F.

  • Moses MIDDAUGH and Miss Ethleen CHAFFEE, both of Sheshequin, married at the Presbyterian Parsonage, Monroeton, on Mar. 2nd, by Rev. Hallock Armstrong.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Michael WELSH, of Berniece, mourn the loss of their little daughter, aged two years, who died on Thursday, the 10th inst.
  • Daniel MC DONALD, a former resident of Cherry Twp., died in Leadville, Colorado on 8th inst., after one week's illness. His remains were brought to this place and interred in the Catholic Cemetery on the 15th inst. The deceased was about thirty years of age.
  • Patrick O'BRIEN, died at his residence in Cherry Twp., on Sunday evening. He was a resident of this vicinity for more than 50 years. Two of his sons are residents of this county: M. J. of Dushore and William of Cherry. Two others, Daniel and Jeremiah reside in Clearfield Co., PA. Another son lives in Iowa. One daughter in Elmira, NY and another daughter in Camptown, PA. Funeral today. The deceased would have been 77 years of age had he lived until the day of his burial.

  • H. E. BABCOCK of the LVRR Ticket office at Towanda was in town on Friday.
  • A. B. BOWMAN and family left this place for their new home in Canton on Wednesday.
  • D. J. MC DONALD, died of pneumonia, yesterday, was one of Leadsville's brightest and most energetic young men. He attained an enviable identity with the mining interests of the country. He was born in Dushore, Sullivan Co., PA. (Leadville, CO newspaper)
  • Ward L. KING, MD, of Lairdsville and Miss Rachel A. DERR, married at the residence of the bride's parents near Turbotville, March 9th by Rev. H. C. Munro
  • William SAYLES and Miss Flora VAN HORN, both of East Troy, married at the residence of the bride's parents, on Marcy 16th

  • E. A. MEAD and Miss Esther Lillian MESSENGER, both of Laporte, married at Laporte on March 26th, by Rev. John Gregson
  • Warren MAY, of Elkland and Miss Sarah G. VARGASON, of Terry Twp., Bradford Co., married at the residence of Wm. D. VARGASON, in Elkland, March 21st, by Rev. E. D. Rawson
  • Charles KISNER and family will remove to Milton about April 1st
  • Mrs. Ambrose FARRELL, of Cherry Twp., died on Tuesday evening at the residence of her parents after an illness of a few days, aged 33 years. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy BERGAN, of Cherry. Funeral on Thursday.
  • Daniel W. COKELY, of Franklindale, Bradford Co., died on the 27th inst., of pneumonia after an illness of 3 or 4 days. He was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at this place on Tuesday. He was about 48 years of age and leaves a wife and three children. He was a brother in law of Patrick MURPHY, Esq., of Cherry Twp.

  • Fox Center - Mrs. Amy, relict of late Evert SHADDUCK, of this place, was surprised with a party for her 69th birthday on April 1st. Out of 43 grandchildren - 37 were present and of 4 great grandchildren - 3 were present. Her six daughters: Mrs. H. WILLIAMS, Mrs. W. W. WRIGHT, Mrs. H. D. DICKERSON, Mrs. Sanford FANNING, Mrs. R. M. WHEELER and Mrs. E. G. SALISBURY and M. T. and A. F. SHADDUCK and Mrs. Malonia SHADDOCK (widow of Louis - oldest son of the lady) gathered.

  • B. Rush JACKSON, of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, formerly of Dushore, has been sick.
  • Mrs. Reuben MUSSELMAN, of Overton, died on Monday, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William KISNER, of Cherry.
  • John CAMPBELL, of Shunk, died on 18th inst., after an illness of a few day, aged about 90 years.
  • George P. KARGE, of Laporte and Miss Hannah DOHM, of Cherry, were married at the Eagle Hotel, Forksville, on Apr. 18th, by Rev. E. D. Rawson
  • James BROWN and Mrs. Belle EILENBERGER, both of Bernice, married at Dushore on Apr. 23rd, by Rev. R. S. Wagner

  • Mrs. John HENNISSEY, of Bernice, died on Tuesday
  • M. D. WELLS, Esq., a prominent citizen of Plunkett's Creek Twp., died on Wed., the 5th inst.
  • The senior editor, Mr. ?____________, of "The Review" has "jumped the broom-stick" and taken unto himself a better half, Miss Mary Bernice THOMPSON. The marriage took place on Wednesday morning at 6:30 by Rev. Burson. The happy couple left on the morning train followed by a shower of old shoes, rice and slippers.
  • Mrs. Edward FARRELL died at her residence in Cherry Twp., on 9th inst. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. MURPHY, of Cherry.
  • John MOONEY, died on Friday. He was a soldier during the war, and drew a pension a short time ago amounting to about $700. The funeral was on Sunday.
  • Mrs. Michael REDDING, died at her home in Cherry Twp., on Saturday, aged 25 years. She was the daughter of Mrs. Garnett SWEETER, formerly Mrs. MITTENDORF. A husband and four children survive. The funeral was held on Monday. She was a sister of Joseph MITTENDORF, of our town.
  • Edwin A. STRONG and Mary B. THOMSON, both of Dushore, married at the home of the bride's parents, May 11th by Rev. G. L. Bursen

  • Mrs. HARRINGTON, of Bernice, died on Wed. last
  • A little daughter arrived at D. W. PEALER'S a few days ago.
  • James MC GEE and Miss Anna AMBS were married on Tuesday
  • John PYNE and Miss Mary FALLS, of Bernice, were married on Tuesday.
  • Mrs. J. Findley SMITH and two children arrived from Iowa on Saturday to spend the summer with her father, Rev. S. F. COLT.
  • Edward FARRELL, of Cherry, is dangerously ill with typhoid fever. His wife died on the 9th.
  • Thomas, son of James DONAHOE, died at the residence of his father in Cherry, on Saturday last, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery on Monday. He was 19 years of age
  • Lyman NEWELL, of Bernice, died on the 15th inst. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and G. A. R. A special train conveyed the remains to Wysox, Bradford Co., for burial. A wife and eight children mourn his loss.
  • William BURGESS, a contractor on the Sullivan and Erie RR when the road was in process of construction, died in Springfield, on Tuesday of last week. He was 62 years old.

  • Patrick CROWLEY and James STEVENS were killed at a cave-in in the new-shaft at Mill Creek, Wilkes Barre
  • Rev. John WHITE, a minister living near Titusville, was arrested on Saturday while eloping with his sister in law, Mrs. GIBSON, a married woman.
  • Martin DONAHOE, of Cherry, died on Saturday, he was about 96 years of age
  • S. S. HINMAN, of Monroeton, died on Sunday.
  • Mrs. Valentine KNELLER, of Cherry, died on the 19th inst. Funeral at Thrasher's Church on Sunday.
  • Charles Edward ESENWINE, of Towanda and Miss Maggie E. CAMPBELL, of Forks, married at the Presbyterian parsonage, Monroeton, May 17th by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • John H. FOSTER and Miss France A. STROPE, both of Burlington, married at same and by same on May 22nd
  • Howard E. MOSTELLAR and Miss Hannah E. TAYLOR, both of Laporte married on May 19th by Rev. S. F. Colt
  • One day last week, while Charles NUSS, David and Cooney BREDBENNER and Jacob ECKROTH, trackmen in the employ of the Sunbury and Hazleton RR, were going over the trestling near Manville, Columbia Co., they were run tnto by a pusher and knocked off. David BREDBENNER was instantly killed, Charles NUSS, foreman, had his leg broken in three places and soon afterwards died. Cooney BREDBENNER and Jacob ECKROTH were also badly injured and are not expected to recover. All four are married men and live in Scotch Valley, at Mifflin X Roads

  • Terrytown - Mrs. Martha A., wife of Edmund HORTON, died a short time ago, aged about 70 years, interred in Terrytown Cemetery
  • Terrytown - Mrs. WHEELER, died at the residence of her son, aged about 70 years, interred in Terrytown Cemetery.
  • W. F. DITTRICH, of Towanda and Miss Florence JACKSON, of Mount Clemens, Mich. (formerly of Dushore) were married at the residence of Hon. B. Rush Jackson on May 30th
  • Edward F. FOWLER and Miss Lizzie Winnifred MULLAN, were married at the home of the bride in Monroeton on May 25th by Rev. Hallock Armstrong

  • The "Bradford Reporter", is offered for sale on account of the death of the proprietor, the late Hon. E. O. GOODRICH
  • John SANDS, of Mordansville, Columbia Co., formerly of Rohrsburg died on the 6th, inst., aged about 45 years
  • Alexander COLLEY, of Benton, died on 6th inst., aged about 95 years. He at one time represented his district in the Legislature. He was the father of William Esq., of Cherry.
  • George MESSERSMITH, of Colley, celebrated his 50th birthday on Saturday last. He was given a surprise party.

  • Emma, daughter of John and Mary TICHEN, died in Terrytown on June 5th, of Diptheria, aged 11 years.
  • New Salem - George C. BIRDSALL is the happiest man we have seen lately. A little daughter.
  • Walter H. CARNOCHAN, a prominent lawyer of Bradford Co. Bar, died at Towanda on the 17th inst., aged 41 years. His remains were taken to Troy for interment on Sunday.
  • William POTTER, of Wilmot, died on June 17th, aged 42 years; his remains were interred in the Colley Cemetery. He was a brother of Winfield POTTER, and resided in Colley for a number of years.

  • Samuel MC BRIDE, of Hills Grove was kicked by a horse and almost instantly killed one day last week
  • Henry MANN, who had taken a bark job of Mr. WHITTICK, about 6 miles from Dushore, while at work on Monday last was struck on the head by a falling limb and instantly killed. He was about 30 years of age. He leaves a wife and three children.. He formerly lived in Wilmot and Terry Twps., Bradford Co.
  • John H. DYE, of Plunkett, died of consumption on June 19, aged 30 years. He was a member of the Sullivan Lodge, #522, I. O. O. F., and buried with the honors of the order.
  • Vasco L. FARNUM and Miss Fannie Ellen LOVELACE, both of Sullivan Co., married at Celestia, by Rev. Dr. S. F. Colt (no date of marriage)

  • Jake MARSH who was injured by the cars at Kansas City a short time ago, has since died
  • Charles M. BEECHER, managing editor of the "Elmira Advertiser", died suddenly on Friday morning of congestion of the lungs
  • Miss Kate BRISLIN, of Cherry, died on June 29th. She was an estimable young lady.
  • Joseph A. DAILY and Miss Carrie A. COOLBAUGH, both of Macedonia, married at the home of the bride in Macedonia, June 29th, by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • Emmet M. DAVIS and Miss Emma J. SCHRADER, both of New Albany, at the Presbyterian Parsonage, Monroeton, July 1st, by Rev. Hallock Armstrong
  • George P. HOLMES, of Penn Twp. and Miss Emma M. BOWERS, of Elkland, at the residence of Frederick Smith, in Elkland, July 7th by Rev. Richard Bedford

  • Ann, widow of late Joel R. MC CARTY, died in Elkland, July 7th, aged 62 years

  • Edward O'DONNELL, an old man, while walking on the track at Sayre on Saturday evening was run over by the cars and killed
  • Simon EICHENLAUB, of Hughesville, about 19 years of age, was drowned on Friday evening, July 8th, while fishing near the Muncy dam.
  • Jacob SIMMONS, an old resident of Davidson Twp., living just below Sonestown, had an attack of paralysis on Monday July 11. At last reports he was entirely helpless.

  • The latest arrival in town is a daughter at R. H. BREWER'S
  • A boy named TRIPP, of Canton accidentally shot himself with a toy pistol on the 4th inst., lockjaw ensued and he died on Wed. last.

  • Colley - Martin HUNSINGER is still declining in health and strength.
  • Patrick LAVELLE was instantly killed by lightning at Centralia on Friday afternoon while standing under a tree.
  • A six year old daughter of D. SMITH was killed by lightning on Monday afternoon as a thunder shower passed over which was so light as to attract no particular attention here; but on the mountain three miles north the Cease school house was struck. A boy named BIDDLE and a little daughter of Levi KNIFFIN were also knocked senseless, having the hair and portions of the body severely burned. The building was considerable damaged. The BIDDLE boy and KNIFFIN'S child will recover ("Canton Sentinel")
  • Joseph VALLANCE was killed at North Ashland Colliery on Friday by a fall of top coal
  • John ROACH, living at Mahanoy City, attempted to board a passing train on Friday afternoon at St. Nicholas and was instantly killed.
  • Palmer ALLEN, of Bernice to Miss Cally BARNES, of Forkston, married on July 20th by Rev. G. L. Burson, at the Evangelical Parsonage
  • G. W. BENDER and Hannah C. BAHR, both of Dushore, married on 27th ult at the same by same
  • George W. CASSELBERY and Miss Hannah E. CROSLEY, both of Muncy Valley, married at the M. E. Parsonage, Muncy Valley, July 28th, by Rev. A. P. Wharton
  • William Harding, infant son of George W. and Emma SMITH, died at Eaglesmere, July 28th, aged 11 months and 5 days

  • Fred TAYLOR, of Davidson Twp., whilst engaged at work in his barnyard, a few days ago was dangerously gored by a vicious bull ("Hughesville Enterprise")
  • Mrs. Ellen, wife of Vincent WOODHEAD, of Elkland, died on Sunday last.
  • Mr. Daniel O'NEAL, of Overton, died Tuesday morning the 9th inst., after an illness of two hours - his obituary will appear next week.
  • The little son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank CROSSLEY, of Laporte, died Thursday evening after a very brief illness
  • Dr. George Firman HORTON, gave the following statement in connection with being registered as a practicing physician in Bradford Co. I commenced the practice of medicine in March 1828 at Terrytown, PA. I graduated at Rensselear's School, Troy, NY on 27 June 1827. In 1828 and 1829 I lectured in the Medical Dept. of Rutger's College, in NYC. I have practiced physic and surgery continuously ever since 1829 without any change of location, settling at Terrytown, within a stone's throw of the old log house in which I was born at 2 o'clock am on 2nd Jan. 1806. In 1834 and 1835 I occasionally attended lectures at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. In 1866, Geneva Medical College, unsolicited, conferred upon me the honorary degree of M. D. and sent me a Diploma. I am a member of the American Medical Association, from the second year of its organization in 1847, and a permanent member since 1858; also a member of the Medical Society of PA (its president in 1862) and of the State Medical Society of Connecticut, and last and not least prized by me, one of the founders and continuous members of the Bradford Co.   • Hiram S. SWEET Esq., of Monroeton died Thursday morning of hemorrhage of the lungs. The deceased was a son of Freeman SWEET, Esq. of Monroe Twp., was about 40 years of age, and leaves a wife and one son to mourn his death.
  • Mrs. Oliver BIRD, of Forks Twp., who has been suffering from a nervous affliction for some time, has at last become partially deranged. She left her home on Sunday evening the 14th inst., since which time no trace of her has been found. At the time of this writing (Wednesday P.M.) we are informed that seventy-five or one hundred people are searching in every direction for her.
  • LaPorte - Arthur Ernest, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank CROSSLEY, died just after midnight, on the 11th, after several days illness, aged 2 years, 1 month and 5 days. The funeral at the Presbyterian Church was on Saturday afternoon.

  • W. H. BROWN, who resided at Bernice for a few years, and since resided in Bradford Co., left last week for Erie, Colorado where he takes a position with a coal company of that city.
  • Daniel O'NEIL, of Overton, died 9th inst., funeral taking place on the 11th. He was buried beside his wife who preceded him some twenty years. At the family plot by the chapel at Overton. He was a native of Ireland, born in the Parish of Kilpipe, County Wicklow, in 1801. He emigrated to this country in 1829 and became a citizen as soon as the law permitted.

  • Hon. Zebulon FRISBIE, of Orwell, Bradford Co., died Monday morning after an illness of only ten hours.
  • Mrs. O. H. BIRD, of Forks Twp., who left her home on Sunday night, Aug. 13th, while partially deranged, returned on Wednesday last. The most diligent search failed to find any trace of her during her absence. We learn that she is much improved mentally, and although very weak physically her friends are much encouraged in regard to her condition. She had subsisted entirely upon berries and water during her ten days absence. She says she returned at once when she became conscious of her whereabouts. She had been but a short distance from home in the woods.
  • Martin HUNSINGER, of Colley, who had long been a sufferer from a chronic disease, died on Saturday last and was buried on Sunday in the Colley cemetery. The deceased was a member of Colley Grange P. of H. and was buried with the honors of the order.

  • Another arrival in town, a daughter at H. H. BLAIR'S
  • Jennie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John BOYD died on Wednesday morning.
  • Gen. William M. GREGG, of Elmira, died at Tunkhannock, on Friday morning, aged 58 years
  • Mr. and Mrs. VAN ETTEN, of the Eaglesmere hotel mourn the loss of their youngest child, which died on Thursday.
  • Col. H. W. WRIGHT, one of the most prominent business men and politicians of the Wyoming Valley, died in Wilkes Barre, Friday, aged 73 years. For 50 years he had been a member of the Luzerne Co. Bar, and several times represented his district in congress
  • James HUNTER, a young man from Barclay, fell from a third story window in the Henry House in Towanda on Tuesday evening, Aug. 30th and died from his injuries on Sunday morning. He was about 37 years of age and resided in Barclay for a number of years.
  • A young man names LAMEREAUX, of Huntsville, Luzerne Co. had been adjudged partially insane, and had been taken to the Asylum at Danville. After being there for some time he was pronounced cured. Some two weeks ago his sister and a young lady to whom he was engaged went to Danville to bring him home. While returning he chatted pleasantly, and when the train reached Nanticoke he went into another car to get a drink of water. He was not seen afterward until Saturday the 27th ult. when his dead body was discovered in the Susquehanna near Nanticoke. The only theory is that he rushed from the train to the river and committed suicide.
  • Mary M., widow of Joseph HUNSINGER, deceased, died at the residence of her son, in Cherry, on Aug. 27th aged 76 years.
  • Fred Morse, youngest child of Henry and Matilda VAN ETTEN, of Eaglesmere, died Sept. 1st, aged 1 year and 3 months. Interment at Dushore

    15 Sept. 1881

  • Miss Freddie ALLEN, the daughter of a prominent citizen of Mansfield, Tioga Co., took poison, a short time ago, because her father had forbidden her keeping company with a young man whom she loved. Her chance of recovery is very slight.
  • Miss Anna, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. COLE, of this place, died at Benton, Columbia Co., on Wed., the 7th inst. She went to Benton to visit relatives four weeks ago, and was attacked with typhoid fever, which resulted in her death. Her remains were interred in the cemetery at Benton on Saturday.
  • Miss Mary A. COLE, of Dushore, died at the residence of George HESS, in Benton, Columbia Co., on Wed., Sept. 7th, aged 22 years, 5 months and 16 days
  • Harry, son of Fernando C. and Phoebe DOPPS, was born on July 18th and died at Laporte Tannery, on Sept. 5th. Also, Minnie, born Oct. 20th 1879, of same parents, died Sept. 11th.

  • John CARROLL has put an iron fence around the grave of his wife in the Catholic Cemetery
  • The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael SULLIVAN, of Albany Twp., was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at this place on Tuesday.
  • Miss Ella BARTLETT passed here (Eaglesmere) on Sabbath last on her way to pay her sister a farewell visit before starting to Minnesota, where her father resides. The wishes of her many friends are that the journey may be a very pleasant one and that she may meet safely the friends who are so anxious to welcome here there, though I doubt not the meeting will be greatly saddened by the absence of a little brother who was drowned some time ago.
  • Rev. R. VIDEAN and wife of Forksville are visiting their daughter, Mrs. R. J. THOMSON
  • Dr. James DE WOLF and wife of Vale, Iowa, formerly residents of Bradford Co., spent several days last week among relatives and friends in Dushore and Laporte. The doctor went west about 30 years ago and this is his first visit East since.
  • A son of Charles HUNSINGER, of Forks Twp., was drowned on Sunday while swimming in the pond near Jordan's Mill in Forks Twp. It is supposed he was taken with cramps; two smaller boys who were with him say that he had swam across the pond, and was returning, when he swam around in a circle two or three times and then sank. The boys who were with him, were to small to render any assistance.
  • Ernest BEEBE, of Millview and Miss Martha E. MC CARTY, of Elkland, were married at the house of John WARREN, on the 14th, by Rev. E. D. Rawson.
  • A son of Henry S. CLARK, of Susquehanna died from eating beef from an animal that had broken its leg several days before. CLARK'S entire family is sick from the same cause.
