Murder at Sayre - On Friday morning, William J. HENRY shot George RUTLEDGE with a 38 caliber revolver; the bullet entered the victim's brain just back of the right eye. Henry had been intimate with Rutledge's wife for some time, and the night before he came home with her they occupied a room together, with the door locked, and when the rightful occupant came home, a little worse for liquor, he was naturally a little annoyed. In the morning, the woman went down stairs and was met by her lord and master with a butcher knife. She ran back to the room where her lover was dressing, her husband following, and as they entered Henry pulled a revolver and fired. He afterwards went for a doctor ,and gave himself up to authorities. In some places he would be hung for such a crime, but in Bradford Co. he will undoubtedly be sent to the county jail for at least three months.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of Campbellsville lives Thomas COGGINS, who is not entirely unknown to a majority of our readers. With him lives, or did live, one Maria JOHNSON, known to fame as "Black Maria," a woman who began her existence some 50 or 60 years ago in the region of Bradford Co. inhabited by the "Pool Tribe." Among the friends who occasionally visited Thomas and Maria was one Dell HUGHES, a young man about 25 years old, who earned a living as a huckster. On Saturday, if we have been correctly informed, Hughes went to Forksville and purchased a pint of "cheap alcohol to make a horse liniment." He was given wood alcohol and warned of its deadly character, being told under no circumstances to drink it as it was poison when taken internally. He went to call on Maria and it seems the pair diluted the wood alcohol and drank it. Tom COGGINS came home some time Saturday evening and was offered some of the mixture, but it was too hot for him, and he is alive. By Sunday morning, the woman was dead and the young man died before help came. Word was sent to Coroner Wackenhuth, at Laporte, who went to the scene Sunday night, and either then or Monday morning empaneled a jury, who after due inquiry into the affair, reported the facts substantially as above. The public is greatly relieved that the suspicions of foul play have proved groundless. The whole sickening tragedy is but another exemplification that "the wages of sin is death."

Sullivan Review
January 29, 1907

The Seeley House, the only hotel in Forksville, was burned to the ground early Sunday morning, very little of the contents being saved. The fire is said to have originated around the chimney leading from the big heater in the cellar.
The stand has been a hotel so long that the memory of the man runneth not to the contrary. About fifteen years ago it was purchased by the late Charles Seeley, and almost entirely rebuilt, and was made modern in every aspect. After his death it came into the hands of Mr. Murray of Athens, and for the past six or seven years has been run by P. M. Scanlin, who conducted a very good hotel.
We understand that the building and its contents were insured for about $3,000, and that the chances of its being rebuilt are very slim. A volunteer fire brigade was hastily organized and some very good work done in saving the surrounding buildings.
