- A son of Mr. & Mrs. Boyd WILCOX of
Albany, aged 8 years, died on Thursday,
June 1st
15 June 1882
- Harry HAMPSON and Miss Eliza CLAYSON,
both of Bernice, married on 6th inst., at
the White House, Bernice by Rev. G. L.
Burson
- Anthony H. RINEHOLD, of Cherry, died on
Sat., June 10th aged 64 years. Funeral
services were held on Sunday at Germany
Church
- Wesley M. COOPER, had a fatal accident in
Nicholson on Friday last. He was engaged
in shingling a barn, and slipping fell
from the building and struck his head on
a rock, killing him instantly. His
funeral took place on Sunday
- Hattie N., only dau. of the late Dr.
Freeman FAIRCHILD, of Dushore, and Anna
E. D. ADAIR, of this place aged 5 years,
6 months and 29 days died in this City
(Perth Amboy) 29 May
- Edward MOLYNEUX and family of Forks Twp.,
removed to Iowa about 6 weeks ago. A
little boy aged 8 years was stricken with
diphtheria within a week after their
arrival and died within a few days.
Shortly after his death a daughter, aged
11 was attacked with the same disease and
she too died.
22 June
1882
- James CAREY, killed in a mining accident
in Wilkes Barre at the mine of Lehigh and
Wilkesbarre Coal Company, at the collier
"The Stanton", on 15 June. He
was only 20 years old and had been
married but a month.
- Forksville:
On 13th Mr. & Mrs. John H. OSLER
celebrated their golden wedding. All
children were present except the youngest
son who is a practicing physician in
Maryland.
- Forksville:
Mrs. Isaac ROGERS is dangerously ill, it
is feared she will not recover
- H. F. MARSH, editor of the Bradford
Reporter, was married on Monday
- James HUNTER of Falls, Wyoming Co.,
committed suicide last week by hanging
while under a temporary fit of insanity
- Geo. C. WRIGHT of Towanda, formerly of
Forksville, was married last week to a
Miss PAULING, of Towanda.
- Mrs. Margaret DUNLAP, of Hillsgrove while
returning from Williamsport on Tuesday,
June 13, was thrown from the carriage and
instantly killed. She was about 60 years
of age. Under Hillsgrove item it
mentions that she was aged 62 years
- Mr. & Mrs. H. JACOBS, of Towanda,
mourn the loss of two bright girls who
died within the last ten days of
Diphtheria, aged 10 and 7 years.
- Mr. Chas. W. HOFFA, of Dushore, and Miss
Cora BARTH were married on Tuesday by
Rev. Mr. Wagner assisted by Rev. Mr.
Burson, at the residence of the bride's
parents in Cherry, on 20 June.
29 June 1882
- Oscar THOMAS and Miss Lydia TAYLOR, both
of Sonestown, married at the M. E.
parsonage, Muncy Valley, 20 June
- Godfrey BAY, an old and respected citizen
of Davidson Twp., died on June 14th, aged
62 years
- Charles HOLMES, a young man attempting to
board a moving train at Athens, on Friday
last, fell under the wheels and was so
badly injured that he died in a short
time.
- Miss Emma WELLES, d/o R. M. WELLES Esq.,
of Towanda, will shortly sail for Europe
where she will join her brother, Mr.
Frank Welles
- Anthony SHAPPERT, of Wilkes Barre was
killed when he fell from a wagon, his
feet becoming entangled in the brake-rope
and dragged some distance, his head
striking the hard bed of the road. He was
57 and leaves a wife and 7 children
- C. C. FINCH, of Laporte died on Sunday
morning aged 54 years. Funeral held on
Tuesday. He was one of the first settlers
of Laporte, coming from Susquehanna Co.
at the location of the county seat and
engaging in the mercantile business. In
1849 he was elected prothonotary,
register and recorder, clerk. He leaves a
wife and one daughter, Mrs. S. F. Colt
Jr.
- Little son of John KIRKENDALL, of
Franklin was killed on Tuesday of last
week. He and his brother were sitting
near a dead tree watching their father
cut down a tree near by. The tree that
Mr. K. fell in falling struck the tree
near which the boys were sitting, and
broke a piece from it which fell on one
of the boys, killing him almost
instantly. The father was a resident of
this place several years ago.
13 July 1882
- Simon RAMALEY, miller in the employ of G.
W. & L. Search at Shickshinny met
with death on Saturday last. He was
caught in a spoke of the wheel that turns
the grinder. He leaves a wife and two
children and was a brother in law of
James M. COUGHLAN, of Kingston, funeral
took place on Monday.
- Lloyd V. BURKHOLDER and Miss Laura I.
TAYLOR, both of Shrewsbury, married at
the residence of the bride's parents in
Shrewsbury on July 4th by Rev. A. P.
Wharton
- Thomas DOYLE and Miss Catharine GAINER,
both of Cherry, married at St. Basil's
church, Dushore by Rev. Father Kaier,
July 4th
- James GOUGH and Miss Charlotte
WAINWRIGHT, both of Bernice, married on
July 2nd by Rev. G. L. Burson
- Louis Morris BARTH and Miss Emma F.
DIEFFENBACHER, both of Dushore, married
at the residence of the bride's parents
near Dushore on July 3
- D. H. LORAH, of Sonestown and Miss Ida E.
LAWRENCE, of Dushore, married at the
residence of D. W. Pealer in Dushore on
July 2 by Rev. R. S. Wagner
- Charles KINSLEY, of Wilmot, died on July
6, aged 45 years. Funeral held in the
Evangelical Church on Saturday. Interment
in Bahr cemetery
- Mrs. Jacob EBERLIN, of Wilmot, died on
July 1, aged 30 years.
- Timothy P. PATCH, who had resided at
Towanda for past 25 years, died at the
residence of his daughter at Corning NY
on June 30th.
- Mrs. J. M. CULLEN, of Wilmot left on
Monday for Erie, Weld Co., CO where she
will join her husband who has been in the
far west for several years. The expect to
make their home in Colorado
- Isaac BIRD and wife, of Williamsport
while attending a funeral on Friday were
thrown from a carriage by the horses
plunging forward. Mrs. Bird struck the
ground with the back of her head and
received fatal injuries. Mr. Bird was
seriously injured.
- Mr. PITTINGILL, of Sayre, committed
suicide on June 28 by taking morphine.
Last summer he attempted to kill himself
by taking paris green but failed. He was
60 years old, addicted to drinking and
somewhat "cranky" on religious
subjects.
- George BODIE, a miner at Bernice, was
crushed by a fall of rock on 5th inst.,
after intense suffering he died Saturday
night, aged 52 years. Funeral held at the
Germany Lutheran Church on Monday
20 July 1882
- William MERZ, a German, was found hanging
in a tree on the mountain near Scranton
last week. He had been there for
sometime. A coroner's jury decided that
it was a case of suicide
- John, s/o James COLLINS, of Barclay, was
drowned near Scranton on Sunday. The
young man was 20 years of age. His
remains were brought to this place for
burial by special train on Tuesday.
- Jospeh SNYDER, of Rupert, hung himself on
Wednesday afternoon about 3 o'clock. He
had tied the rope at the top of the
garret then pushed himself off, so as to
hang in the stairway. He had made several
attempts of taking his life before this,
but has always been detected. He was
about 55 years of age
- John W. SQUIRE, of Carbondale, a young
man nineteen years old was accidently
killed at Kingston on the evening of the
11th inst. He had just completed the
commercial course at the Wyoming
Seminary. He and a companion had spent
the evening walking and enjoying the cool
breeze that came after a most sultry day.
They returned to the seminary shortly
after 11 and at about half-past eleven
the unfortunate young man took his
station at a window in the third story of
the building, and in some manner lost his
balance and fell to the ground below. The
head struck a stone, his skull being
fractured by the force of the fall. He
lived an hour and twenty minutes after
the accident occurred.
- John L. SPOERL, of Philadelphia and Miss
Sophia STAUB, of Elkland, were married at
the residents of the brides father, Lewis
W., by Rev. R. Bedford on July 11th
- John SULLIVAN, of Cherry, died on July
14th, aged 30 years. His remains were
interred in the Catholic Cemetery in this
place on Sunday. He leaves a wife.
- William ALBERTSON, who formerly resided
in Cherry Twp., and removed to Kansas a
few years ago, was drowned on 4th inst by
falling from the deck of a steamer into
the river.
- John TUTHILL, an old man, 84, went to the
new courthouse on Friday last and sitting
down upon a stone, watched the men at
their work. While sitting there he
suddenly fell backwards, dead. He died of
old age. "Lackawanna Democrat"
- Col. James MOORE< a prominent citizen
of Lewisburg University, died on 4th
27 July 1882
- Mrs. Rebecca MOLYNEUX, of Forks, one of
the oldest residents, died at her son,
David's on Sunday last, aged 94
- William HUFNAGLE, who kept a low grog
shop in connection with a disreputable
house, in Luzerne Co. about 5 miles from
Beach Haven was killed by Henry Meyers
during a drunken brawl on July 15th.
Meyers is now in custody.
- Mrs. Charles KINSLEY, of Wilmot was
arrested on Wed. last upon the info. of
Charles Kinsley Sr. charging her with
administering poison to Chas. Kinsley Jr.
causing his death. When before the
Justice the prosecutor abandoned the
proceedings
- Henry MERCUR, a well known business man
of Towanda, died at his residence in that
place on Friday evening, July 21, aged
43. He leaves a wife and 3 children
- William HART, of Pittston, while
intoxicated, fell into a well and was
drowned. After his body was raised and
placed in a room of his house, a dog
which was very much attached to him,
stood guard over the body and would not
allow anyone to approach, not even the
members of the family. The dog was shot
as a last resort.
- Patrick MAY and Miss Anna CONNOR, married
on Tuesday Morning at St. Basil's church
in this place, Father Walsh officiating.
- Forksville Mrs. R. D. LANCASTER'S
funeral was largely attended.
