Benedict Ortlieb, of this place, came to his death by drowning in Steafather’s millpond, one mile from Dushore, on Saturday afternoon last, aged 59 years, 7 months and 10 days. Interment was Quinn’s cemetery on Tuesday. He insisted on taking a bath in the pond, efforts to stop him being in vain. He divested himself of his clothing, with the exception of his shirt, sprang into the water up to his waist, dove in under, and never came to the surface. His body was recovered between 7 and 8 o’clock the same evening, being in the water about three hours. Squire Thomson impaneled a jury and held an inquest, which resulted in a verdict of death by accidental drowning. Deceased was a man of intemperate habits and it is supposed was partially intoxicated at the time of his death. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and had a wide reputation for skillfulness and fineness of workmanship. His friends were numerous and of enemies he had none

The Sullivan Review November 28, 1928
An appreciation of the late Jerome N. Ortlieb
(contributed by his Pastor):
Jerome Napoleon Ortlieb came from German ancestry; his father Benedict, having been an immigrant, married Lena Litzelman. Jerome, born in Dushore, February 3, 1859 was one of the children of this union and who in childhood became identified with the Lutheran church and was brought up under its spiritual and moral nurture.
Not always but frequently men choose the calling of their fathers. Jerome followed his father’s trade and took up apprenticeship; learned carpentering and cabinet making, and in the use of saw, plane and chisel became a master, displaying the skill and talent of a great artist in wood.
His late residence on Carpenter Street stands as a splendid witness to his genius. The hardwood floors of checkerboard design tongued and grooved; the doors and window frames of cherry inlaid with ash and trimmed with walnut; the molding and corners, and the grills and scrolls of woodwork; the massive office desks, tables, bookracks, and other accessories, all of them the product of his patient, untiring handiwork, present a project of accomplishment that amazes anyone who understands the nature of such workmanship. It reveals a unique constructive capacity.
In brother Jerome, honesty was coupled with genius. Whether he built a barn or made a parlor ornament, he applied the same pains and produced a finished job, well done. Surely, in words of Holy writ he was a "workman that needeth not to be ashamed". The Almighty Maker could say of His creation: "It is very good." In some such spirit of satisfaction this human mechanic was wont to look upon his "creations"
We remember the subject of this sketch as head member of the firm known as the Dushore Construction Company. During an illness of more than a year, which slowly sapped his strength, Mr. Ortlieb displayed the same calmness of temperament and unfailing patience as in his days of activity at the carpenter bench. Never murmuring, he bore his sufferings like a Christian martyr. The remembrance of this good man, now departed, remains with us like the precious odor of spikenard.
A gentle husband, kind father, accommodating neighbor and upright citizen, he was respected and highly esteemed, for the substantial qualities of character he possessed. Released from all earthly sufferings at eleven o’clock Wednesday, November 14, 1928, our friend entered into life.
The funeral services were held in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor W.H. Fehr officiating. The funeral address was based on the words of St. Paul, 2 Cor. 5:1 "We know… we have a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
Mr. Ortlieb was married twice. His first wife was Diana Frey daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Frey. Six years after her death, Jerome was wedded to his surviving widow, Jenny McHenry Ortlieb. A daughter, Miss Coloma Ortlieb, R.N., three sons, John, of San Francisco, Calif., Otto and Bernard of Dushore; two sisters, Miss Mary Ortlieb, and Mrs. Floyd Palmer of Auburn, NY, and two brothers, Morris Ortlieb of Rochester and Victor of Hollenback, and three grandchildren remain to mourn his demise.
His age was 69 years, 9 months, and 11 days.
It is a big thing to have lived this life aright; to have met the obligations of manhood squarely, and to have borne its responsibilities in an honorable way. Many and trying are petty aggravations. Heavy and grievous to be borne is the cross. "Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

It was here that the descendent devoted her life to the cares of her family.

Her kindliness and gracious spirit inspired everyone who knew her the friendship, love and esteem of the entire community. Her life was consecrated to her husband and children, and she performed her part in life’s great drama nobly. She has bequeathed unto her children the cherished memories of a perfect mother and the wonderful example of a Christian life.
