The Sullivan County Genealogical Web Page is most grateful to Carol Brotzman for making possible the preservation of this history. Data for this composition was obtained mainly from Evelyn Potter Keeney’s genealogy compiled in 1996 [see picture at end of this history]. The story also includes added data from Dick Hunsinger, Lois Neuber and Carol Hoose Brotzman herself. Also, Ernest Hatton provided data regarding the Potter origins. His site can be found here:The Hatton-Exley-Potter Genealogy. Finally, we are thankful to Tara Drake for three photos shown below and for information on the Zacharias and Nolan families.
Carol would like to dedicate this composition to the original author of most of this work, Evelyn Virginia Potter Keeney, and her niece, Nicole Louise Repsher. Both are gone now but not forgotten.

Evelyn Potter Keeney recorded that there were five Potter brothers who came to this area from Huntington, England; however it was probably Huntington, PA. Lois Neuber reports that William Wilson, who went by "Wilson" during his life, was born possibly June 4, 1816 in Huntington Twp, in what is now Luzerne County, PA. Ernie Hatton thinks that this date is actually a baptismal date, and that he was born in 1814, but that is still uncertain. In any case, "Wilson" married Anna Catherine Hunsinger on 28 Oct 1838 in Cherry Twp, in what is now Sullivan County, PA.
There is considerable uncertainty about the early Potter history in Sullivan County. Part of this revolves around the decision by
William Potter to use "Wilson" in his every day life and on many records, such as the census records, where that is how he is recorded. However, it is also the
case that the Old German Church Records for the early Lutheran community refer to him as William Potter, so that is what we will use in this story.
We are not even certain about which or how many of the "five brothers" actually arrived in Sullivan County. Ernest Hatton can prove the existence and origins of two of the original brothers, but we are not saying the legend is wrong. We just hope
some day to prove the total ancestry. Evelyn’s specialty was bringing this
gigantic family forward, not taking them backwards, so we will now concentrate
on her area of expertise. The "Poitiers" website probably points to the ultimate ancestry of this
Potter family, but no one has so far proven it. I know both Nicole and Evelyn would have loved to surf the net and find their family
had they only had the chance.

she may have been a New Haven Potter, William Potter of New Haven was hung

girl blames it on old age but at his trial he said he started at age 11. I
connect to both families of Potters. Hope this sets it straight

Elizabeth moved to Missouri for five years and then returned to Colley.
Elizabeth Hunsinger was living with William and Catharine age 75.(Not proven,
but Marcy Pitkin of Florida claims that William Wilson Potter was a grandfather
to her mother. William was a stepbrother of William Colley (for whom Colley
Township is named.) It is stated that Thomas Freeman Batcheler 1756-1787 of
Philadelphia married Sarah Parsons born 1756 died unknown. They had two children
Ann 1777-1874 and Joseph 1781-1834, after Thomas died Sarah married Jonathan

v. William (Willie)
Lansing Potter, born May 01, 1875 in PA, his middle name is Lansing according to
the LDS records. Lois Neuber suggests Lawsing based on her records, but Lansing seems morelikely.
5. Winfield (William) Scott2
Potter (William Wilson1) was born October 1844 in Cherry
Township, Sullivan County, PA The Hunsinger book has 1844, and died 1916 in
Colley Township, Sullivan County, PA.
He married Annie Elizabeth Reeser 1874, daughter of Reverend Reeser and
Sarah Martin. She was born January
23, 1850 in Maryland, (May 1855 by census), and died January 13, 1938 in
Peckville, Pennsylvania. The family is buried in Colley Cemetery, Colley,
PA
This
family is not without discrepancies in data. The Hunsinger Genealogy refers to
him as Winfield Potter, being born in 1844. Evelyn Potter Keeney states his name is
William Scott Potter being born 1855. The 1844 date matches census and
headstones. Both state he died 1916 and is buried in the Colley
Cemetery.
Regarding
the census records, this family can be found in the following places:
Listed
in 1880 census of Cherry Twp., Sullivan Co., Pa. with wife and children.
Listed
in 1900 census of Lopez, Colley Twp., Sullivan Co., Pa. with wife 3 children and
the married daughter, Vesta Custer who is widowed. Vesta’s daughter Frances
Custer was living with them too.
Annie’s
birthdate would be in question in regards to the 1900 census but her own
celebrations, which were recorded in the newspapers numerous times, provide the
date I use as well as the date Evelyn Potter Keeney used.

In
Memory of My Husband Winfield Potter Died July 27
Although
three score and ten years of life, yet the span of life seemed short. As a
citizen and father, he was an example worthy of patronage. Truthful and honest
in his dealings with his fellowmen, often losing financially so as not to
distress those who were under obligations to him. His life was one of purity and
temperance, avoiding popularity.
In
order to be convenient to the doctors, we closed our home two years ago and were
at Old Forge and Peckville. After remaining there about seven weeks, we decided
to come to Hollenback, thinking the country air might be a benefit. Although he
has been ailing for three years and unable to work, he has been patient through
all.
Six
children were born to us. Four who are living were here to care for their
father. We also have sixteen grandchildren of whom he was very fond, but having
a favorite in every family, Kenneth of Peckville, Carl of Old Forge, Lenora of
Jennings Md and baby Dorothy of Hollenback. There is also a baby Winfield of Old
Forge.
Four of his granddaughters, Frances Custer, Marjorie Dikeman of Peckville, Grace Potter of Old Forge and
Hazel Potter of Hollenback carried their grandfather’s flowers at his
funeral.
His
influence over his children commanded obedience, true manhood and
womanhood.
Death
has visited our home three times, baby Edna at Colley, our oldest son Linta at
Lopez aged 18 years, and now a husband and father. The empty crib, the vacant
chair, the sadness and loneliness remind us that it is death.
The
last words are stamped on our minds. My husband said, “Take my hand and keep
hold of it.” As I held his cold hand the thought came to me, is this the Valley of
Death through which all must pass to reach the great beyond? If we only
understand, some day, some time, we will understand. God will take care of us
through every day and o’er all the way.
Annie
E. Potter.

Mrs.
Annie Reeser Potter, daughter of the late Rev. William and Sarah Martin Reeser,
pioneer residents of Sullivan County, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
T.G. Dikeman, at Peckville, Pa. Thursday morning January 13th,
1938
Mrs.
Potter was born January 23, 1850, and was a woman of sterling character and
indomitable courage, ever active in any welfare work, which would benefit church
or community.
While
a resident of Peckville, she attended the Baptist church. She was active in the
W.C.T. U. a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the Stewart Methodist church of
Old Forge and a charter member of Colley Grange.
During
her lifetime occurred many major conflicts and tragedies; the Civil War, Spanish
American War, the assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley. While she
and her brother, the late Hon. M.W. Reeser, lived with the family in Harford
county, Maryland, they as children were greatly impressed by the screams of the
slaves as they were punished, also by the sounds of the heavy artillery while
the Civil War was in progress.
In
1874 she was married to Winfield Scott Potter and the union was blessed with the
following children: Linta and Edna, who died at an early age; Vesta of
Peckville, with whom she lived; Milton of Williamsport; the late Ellery E. of
Hollenback and Burton of Old Forge. Also twenty grandchildren and fifteen great
grandchildren, who are richer because of her life, who lived her life according
to God’s Word.
A
season of prayer was held in Peckville followed by services in the Evangelical
church at Colley on Saturday, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Whitney,
pastor of the Baptist church of Peckville. By request of the deceased, a mixed
quartette from Peckville, sang, “God Will Take Care of You,” and
“Good Night and Good Morning.”
The
Colley Grange were in charge of the service at the grave.
The pallbearers were grandsons, Harold Potter, Ernest Dikeman, Miles Potter, Carl Potter, Burton Potter and Kenneth Dikeman. Flower bearers were members of the W.C.T. U. at the home in Peckville and at Colley. Granddaughters bore the floral tributes.
The
funeral was largely attended by relatives, neighbors and
friends
Annie (Reeser) Potter wrote as follows in 1929:
The
Sullivan Review
August
28, 1929
The following preamble
is the introduction to an extended
History
of the Reeser Ancestors:
John
and Madeline (Betts) Reeser
found at Faces and Families of Old Sullivan County, Group Six.
The
Reeser reunion has been held annually for several years at Picture Rocks, Pa.
Mr. and Mrs. John Reeser, came from Berks county to Cherry township, Lycoming
county, now Sullivan county, in 1821, locating on the Loyalsock creek at Ellis,
later known as the Seaman place. He erected the first grist mill in the county,
later he located on the farm known as the Wentzel place where he erected the
second grist mill, about one half mile from Dushore.
Many
people came to Cherry Township when it was a wilderness. The first road built in
Cherry township was the Susquehanna and Tioga Turnpike from Berwick by the way
of Long Pond to the Loyalsock. Later it was extended to the Haverly settlement
at Overton, from thence it went over the Huckleberry Mountain to Greenwood and
Monroeton. Andrew Shiner took the contract of building the road. The contract
price was $1150 per mile with extra pay for bridges. Half of his pay was to be
in land at $2 per acre. The subcontractors took jobs on the road at $8.00 per
mile and were to take half their pay in land at $4.00 per acre. By this means
many of the early settlers secured their land.
Mr.
and Mrs. Reeser were parents of eleven children, who were: Daniel, who married
Catherine Litzelswope; William, who married Sarah Martin, and after her death he
married Mrs. Melvina Taylor; Charles, who married Sarah Hicks; Jeremiah, who
married Caroline Hicks, a sister of Sarah's; Amos who married Rebecca
Dieffenbach; John Jr., who married Elizabeth Rupp, and after her death, Mrs.
Rowe; Benjamin, who died in infancy; Reuben, who married Martha Black; Adam, who
married Mary Siets and after her death he was again married; Elizabeth, who
married Joseph Huffmaster, who was killed in the battle of Chancellorsville, she
then married Elias Smith and later Barney Kast; Susan, who married Valentine
Morter, after his death, Richard Douglas, who was a Civil War
Veteran.
William and Adam Reeser
entered the ministry of the Evangelical church. Amos conducted a hotel at the
Ellis stand and later at Dushore. Reuben, while hunting with Mr. Wilcox,
discovered the first coal at Bernice. The other brothers were tillers of the
soil, making comfortable homes for their families. John Reeser, Sr. died Dec. 9,
1860 at the age of 70 years. His wife died Jan. 8, 1869, aged 75
years.
These
parents and their children have passed to the Great Beyond, but their deeds live
on. Many incidents of parents and grandparents are still in our memory. I heard
my father, William Reeser, relate an incident, which occurred at the table when
they were boys at home. Their mother was serving soup when one of the boys said
it was too thick, another said it was too thin, another it was too salty, and
another that it had too much pepper. Their mother would not tolerate
faultfinding or disobedience. She got the hickory stick and gave them dessert,
saying as she applied it, "I will give you thick and thin and salt and pepper."
They were careful after that not to find fault.
I remember when we lived in
Cherry Township, when I was quite young; I went with my sister Loretta to my
grandparent's home. I disobeyed my mother by asking Grandmother for a piece,
while my sister was in the garden getting vegetables for grandmother. She gave
me a piece of bread with a generous spread of butter and maple sugar. I did not
find fault for it was delicious.

From
the Streby History of Cherry Township:
Mrs.
Freeman Fairchild was the first person baptized in the township, the ceremony
being performed in 1821 by Elder Solomon Dimmock of the Baptist faith. She
united with the church at Huntingdon. Rev. Dimmock, who was from Huntingdon,
held services in the house of Ezra Payne once a month; afterward the services
were held at Roswell Phelps’ and Freeman Fairchild’s. In November 1828, Freeman
Fairchild and Mrs. Brookins Potter were baptized and, some time later, Roswell
Phelps and wife, Miss Salome Tompkins, and Mrs. Alden Potter. Previous to these,
there were only two Baptists in the settlement, Brookins Potter and Mrs.
Nicholas Potter from Huntingdon. Visits were made to the settlement by Elders
Joel Rogers, Elias Dodson and Griffith Lewis. After Elders Rogers, Dodson and
Samuel Chapin preached here alternately every four weeks. When the Cherry church
was started, only two members of the Huntingdon church remained, Hannah
Fairchild and Rachael Rogers, all the others having died or moved away. On
examination of the records kept by D.H. Goodwin, recording secretary of the
school committee for Cherry Hill and vicinity, it is found that on Thursday
evening, January 12, 1832, a meeting of the citizens was called at the house of
Freeman Fairchild to discuss the building of a schoolhouse. Jacob Dieffenbach
was elected president and Roswell Phelps, clerk. It was voted that a schoolhouse
be built upon the land donated by Roswell Phelps for that purpose. It comprised
16 square rods of land and laid between the present site of Bahr’s cemetery and
the Turnpike. Freeman Fairchild, John G. Bartch and William Colley were
appointed a committee to build the schoolhouse, which was to be of plank, one
story high, 26x22 feet with a chimney and fireplace in one end. It was also
voted that the schoolhouse should be considered free to all denominations that
wished to hold religious services there. Thirty-nine of the pioneers subscribed
toward building this schoolhouse, some in money, some by work and some with
material. At a meeting held in August 1832, Rosewell Phelps was elected
chairman, David H. Goodwin, secretary and Roswell Phelps, David H. Goodwin and
Henry W. Cooper, the school committee for the ensuing year. At a meeting held
April 3, 1841, it was "Resolved, that the right of pre-eminence to occupy the
house shall stand as follows: 1st, the common day school; 2nd, preaching and
prayer meeting; 3rd, Sunday school; 4th, singing school; 5th, debating school."
The first school in the settlement was taught by Salome Tompkins for $1 per week
and board, the second by Roswell Phelps of Symsbury, Connecticut, and the third
by Alma Potter of Huntingdon, PA.
Ernie Hatton records the
following data regarding the disputed birth date of Brookins Potter:
He was born June 5, 1858
according to the census of 1860 and is listed as Burkens Potter. I do have a
date of June 18th.also, which is probably a baptismal date. They used to try to
baptize the children pretty quickly back then, especially in good
weather.
Brookins
was the correct surname at the time of the union between the Potter and Brookins
family. The name may have been Brookings at some time, sounds reasonable, but
there is no trace to the name change. See my records.
This
was a very hard family to trace and until I did it there was no record leading
to the present family any further back then Huntington Twp.,
PA.
The only record of the marriage had to
come from me because there is no other record that I know of...I had someone
research it for me in Vermont and there is only a slight mention of the marriage
there.
It
isn't that uncommon for a family to get the wrong date, especially if they only
give a year. I bet someone entered the dates I have as 1858 and family tree put
1858/59?
Anyway,
my source is the census of 1860.
There were other Brookins
Potters as well, not just this one.
