DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WARBURTON AND MARY SADLER

By Lyle Rockwell and Larry Pardoe
October 2008
Updated January 2009

There were two John Warburtons that came to Sullivan County, Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. One John Warburton located in Forks Township; the other, in Elkland Township. The family history presented here is of the John Warburton who located in Elkland Township. I could not find the relationship between these two John Warburtons, if any. Also, when I started this research on John of Elkland, I didn’t realize that Larry Pardoe had already done extensive research on this same family. So, this history is presented as a team effort, with Larry Pardoe as the major contributor. I have elected to present only the first six generations, mainly to protect living descendants and their privacy. If you would like information on later generations, contact:

Lyle Rockwell at jrockwell8@stny.rr.com or Larry Pardoe at lorinpardoe836@comcast.net

Editor's Note: After we produced the first issue of this history in Octoer 2008, as fate would have it, we heard from George Robert Warburton of Clyde, Cloud County, Kansas in November of 2008. George is the great great grandson of John Warburton (1770-1836) and Mary (Sadler) Warburton (1783-1865). As a result, we have been admitted to a priceless and comprehsensive history of this Warburton family which we shall be adding to this page progressively over time. The new records include information on several additonal children of John and Mary (Sadler) Warburton; the original Warburton Family Bible, more than 300 years old and possible much older; a diary and other sources describing portions of their lives in England before coming to America, the voyage to the New World itself, and the first twenty years or so of their lives here; and a remarkable, even historically unique, Sketch Book created by John Warburton in the year of his death in 1836. For this treasure trove of information, we are grateful to George and his familial ancestors who handed these materials down over time from generation to generation. They now are kept in a safe deposit box in Kansas, where George insures their safety and preservation for our collective heritage.

As a result of this new information, Lyle Rockwell conducted a "redo" of this history with help from George R. Warburton, Larry Pardoe and Carol Jacobs. They are all to be commended for their part in this historical recovery operation. The revised version of this history now extends back to George and Mary (Chantler) Warburton, grandparents of "our" John Warburton who emigrated to America. So, let us now go back in time to Liverpool at the end of the 1700s and the family of Warburtons who came shortly thereafter to Pennsylvania.

First Generation

1.     George WARBURTON was born about 1670 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. He died on 26 Jan 1735 in England. He was buried in Warburton Church Yard, Cheshire Co., England.

Source: John & Mary Sadler Warburton Family Bible, in possession of their GGGgrandson George Robert Warburton, born in 1930. George sent to me the information on the descendants of George T. Warburton, son of John & Mary Warburton. (2008)LDR

My Grandfather and Grandmother G & M Warburton were laid in Warburton Church Yard, waiting for the Resurrection morning.

George married Mary CHANTLER in Warburton Township, Cheshire Co., England. Mary was born about 1686 in England. She died about 1766 in England. She was buried in Warburton Church Yard, Cheshire Co., England.

They had the following children.

2    F           i.    Margaret WARBURTON was born on 24 Nov 1708 in England. She died on 13 Jun 1729 in England.

3    F          ii.    Elizabeth WARBURTON was born on 19 Feb 1710 in England. She died on 28 Dec 1752 in England.

Elizabeth married Thomas HORNBY.

+              4    M       iii.    George WARBURTON was born on 14 Nov 1718.

+              5    M       iv.    Peter WARBURTON was born on 14 Apr 1725. He died on 24 Jun 1794.

Second Generation

4.     George WARBURTON (George) was born on 14 Nov 1718 in England. He was buried in Lymm Church Yard, Cheshire Co., England.

Source: John & Mary Sadler Warburton Family Bible and diary, in possession of their GGGgrandson George Robert Warburton, born in 1930. George sent to me the information on the descendants of George T. Warburton, son of John & Mary Warburton. (2008)LDR

George lived near Warburton Mill & had 2 sons and 2 daughters, George, Thomas, Mary & Margaret.

George married (____) (____). (____) was buried in Lymm Church Yard, Cheshire Co., England.

They had the following children.

                6    M         i.    George WARBURTON.

                7    M        ii.    Thomas WARBURTON.

                8    F         iii.    Mary WARBURTON.

                9    F         iv.    Margaret WARBURTON.

5.     Peter WARBURTON (George) was born on 14 Apr 1725 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. He died on 24 Jun 1794 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. He was buried in Hollingsgreen Chapel, Lancashire Co., England.

Father Peter Warburton died, aged 66 years. Buried at Holensgreen Chapel. Text at his funeral: Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, from henceforth. Revelations 14 Chapter 13 Virs.

On his gravestone: Blest Angels watch this sleeping D? till Jesus comes to raise the Just, then may we make with Sweet surprise and ......

My father & mother P & M Warburton was laid in Hollinsgreen Chapel Yard, north east side.

Peter married Mary MOLYNEUX **, daughter of Edward MOLYNEUX and Martha (____). Mary was born in England. She died about 1809 in England. She was buried in Hollingsgreen Chapel, Lancashire Co., England.

** Editor's Note: You can read more about the Molyneux famly that came to Sullivan County at The Genealogy of William Molyneux. On March 11, 2009: Larry Pardoe wrote the following commentary on the complex relationship between the Molyneux and Warburton families:

I do have access to the Genealogy of William Molyneux and His Descendants, a book originally authored by George Molyneux Pardoe in the 1890's, revised in 1936 and then again in 1976 by Louise E. (Molyneux) Woodhead, and kept updated since then. This book suggests:

XIV. John Molyneux also a weaver by trade. He married Margery - last name is unknown. They had two children: William and Mary. Mary was married to Peter Warburton.
XIV. William Molyneux married Margaret Atherton and settled in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. The story of William Molyneux and his descendants is contained elsewhere in this genealogy.

William Molyneux's son John married Martha Sadler.
Martha Sadler was the daughter of Samuel Sadler and his 2nd wife Mary Austin. Samuel had first married Mary Forster and one of their children was Mary Sadler who married John Warburton (1770-1836). (This John Warburton is the 2nd great-grandfather of George R. Warburton, the source for our recenlty unocvered resources on the Warburotn history).
I find conflicting data between the "Molyneux" book referenced above and the Warburton Genealogy on this site. The Warburton Genealogy shows that John Warburton (1770-1836) was the son of Peter Warburton (1725-1794) and Mary Molyneux (abt 1735-1809). It shows that Mary Molyneux was the daughter of Edward Molyneux and Martha ? - no dates. So this information connects this particular branch of the Warburtons to the Molyneux family, but doesn't seem to match the same Molyneux family of Sullivan County. (Whether this Peter Warburton is the same Peter Warburton of the "Molyneux" book isn't known, although both "Peter's" apparently married Mary Molyneux's. My problem is that, when following Mary Molyneux to her parents, there is a difference between the Molyneux book and the Warburton genealogy. The Molyneux book shows Mary's parents as John and Margery and the Warburton genealogy showing Mary's parents as Edward and Martha).
There is a second Warburton family from Sullivan County: Descendants of John Warburton and Ann Clarke. No one, to my knowledge, has been successful at linking them together as yet - through the historical records on the Warburton family. This other family incldued John Warburton, b. 1797, d. 1853. He married Ann Clark/Clarke. Their first child was Ellen Warburton, b.1826, who m. Henry George Molyneux, b. 1814. He was the son of Thomas Molyneux and Hannah Rogers. (This Thomas Molyneux was a brother to the John Molyneux mentioned above who married Martha Sadler). There are other descendants of this Warburton family who married Molyneux's, i.e. Ellen's brother William Wallace Warburton's second wife was Theodosia Ann Molyneux; and there were at least two other Molyneux/Warburton marriages that I know of, maybe more.
Lyle Rockwell managed to trace the "second" John Warburton, b. 1797, back five more generations but was not able to connect him to the "first" John Warburton, b. 1770. We do know that John Warburton, b. 1770 was of Elkland Township and John Warburton, b. 1797 was of Forks Township and the latter's descendants married into the Molyneux family.

Peter and Mary had the following children.

+            10    M         i.    John WARBURTON was born in 1770. He died on 7 Sep 1836.

11    M        ii.    Thomas WARBURTON was born about 1772 in Rexton, Warrington Parish, Lancashire Co., England. He died in 1829 in Cheshire Co., England.

Source: John & Mary Sadler Warburton Family Bible and diary, in possession of their GGGgrandson George Robert Warburton, born in 1930. George sent to me the information on the descendants of George T. Warburton, son of John & Mary Warburton. (2008)LDR

Thomas had no issue. They lived in the Parish of Lymm, Cheshire, Old England.

12    F         iii.    Mary WARBURTON was born about 1775 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England.

+            13    M       iv.    Peter WARBURTON was born about 1778.

Third Generation

10.   John WARBURTON (Peter, George) was born in 1770 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. He died on 7 Sep 1836 in Elkland Township, Sullivan Co., PA.

Source: John & Mary Sadler Warburton Family Bible and Diary, in possession of their GGGgrandson George Robert Warburton, born in 1930. George sent to me the information on the descendants of George T. Warburton, son of John & Mary Warburton. (2008)LDR

(The Bible, Diary, etc. was handed down from John to his son George Thomas, to George's daughter Cora Belle, to Belle's nephew George Harry Warburton, to George Harry's son George Robert Warburton, who has them in his possession 2008. The Warburton Family Bible, published in 1639,  was brought from England when John & Mary came to USA in 1816, and was thought to be in the Warburton family for hundreds of years.) The first successful organized effort to permanently establish means for the education of the youth, was made at Forksville, by Mrs. Sarah Huckell, in conjunction with the inhabitants within eight or ten miles of that place, who by deed in 1816 conveyed one-half acre of land, where the present school house now stands, to Samuel Rogers, Powell Bird and William King, trustees, on which to erect a house for public benefit. The inhabitants of the whole neighborhood celebrated the Fourth of July of that year by clearing the ground. Moses Rogers assisted in carrying water to shake the thirst of these pioneers of education, who, during the ensuing autumn, built the first house for public instruction in Sullivan County. The school was opened December 1, 1816, John Warburton being the first teacher employed. Dillsworth's Spelling Book, Daboll's Arithmetic, and the Bible were the text-books used.

History of Elkland Township:

John Warburton is first mentioned as a teacher of the Forksville School in 1816. He settled on lands near Joseph Reeves. The first elections of the township were held in his house. He was prominent among those entrusted with the township business. His descendants as near as can be given are John M., Jesse and Mary-Ann.

Another source: Research by Larry Pardoe;

1820 Elkland Twp., Lycoming Co., PA census shows: Warburton, John, age 26-45, wife 26-45, 2 sons under 10, 1 son 10-16; 2 daughters under 10 and 1 daughter 10-16.

1830 Elkland Twp., Lycoming Co., PA census shows: Warburton, John, (living next door to who I believe was his son - John M. Warburton). L.P.

In LDS records I could only find marriage of John Warburton to Mary Sadler, and records of birth and christening for one child - Jesse Warburton.

Probably came to America about 1816 - The "Descendants of John T. Wilcox" by R. J. Porter shows son John M. Warburton came to Pennsylvania at age eleven. L.P.

From the "Lycoming Gazette", 21 Sept. 1836:

"John Warburton died at his residence in Elkland Twp., on the 8th inst., at an advanced age. He was among the earliest settlers in the county and has left a wife and large family." (Entry in his Bible has Sep. 7, 1836)

John married Mary SADLER, daughter of Samuel SADLER and Mary FORSTER, on 10 Apr 1803 in Saint Peter, Church Street, Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. Mary was born on 28 Mar 1783 in Liverpool, Lancashire Co., England. She died on 20 Sep 1865 in Plymouth, Sheboygan Co., WI.

"You were wanting to know about my children, I will give you the following particulars: The children of John & Mary Warburton" Tesse (Jesse) Warburton born March 2nd 1808 (no death date) Remark-Tesse is very low for his age.

Hi Joyce - I am attaching some Cranmer genealogy that I found in an old ledger from an auction. Not sure if it is of value to anyone. Will let you

decide if you want to use it. Tried to copy it as accurately as I could from pencil inscriptions. Hopefully-it will help someone.

Thanks

George Warburton says May Anne's husband’s name was James Hile, from Montoursville. Married June 9, 1834 by Rev. A.C. Dubois., and lived near Williamsport, Lycoming Co., PA.

1835 - 21 May removed to Medina County, Ohio

She died with a very long sickness supposed to be consumption, leaving five small children, and buried near Johnsons Corners in Medina County, Ohio.

Mary married James HILE on 9 Jun 1834.

I found a James Hile, age 48 born in PA (born 1812) in 1860 census of Franklin Twp., Summit Co., OH

This may be the same James that married Mary Anne. He is married to Elizabeth, with two children, Henriette age 12 & William age 8.

They had the following children.

41    F           i.    Mary HILE was born in Feb 1835 in Williamsport, Lycoming Co., PA.

              42    M        ii.    John W. HILE.

William, born Sept 7, 1814 has light hair and rather light eyes.

There is a female buried in an unmarked grave next to William Warburton in Hollis Ks.

I believe this to be Christina his wife as he owned a large plot.

She outlived him, as he died in 1888. You can find her on the 1890 Census, listed as living with Edwin C. Warburton.

Dear George & Ann: (Bible, Diary, etc. to be sent to George Harry Warburton (1899-1973)

It seems a terribly long time since I heard anything from you, hope you are alive and well?

Well, I am getting so I dread to sit down to writing letters and put it off and off, & off until I am almost ashamed to write at all. I am still secretary in two societies and have to make long reports to send in. Grace & Albert (her husband) visited me in September, Albert is a government lawyer. George & wife (George Bosworth) visited me in October. Both wanted Father's old Bible, It must be about 500 years old & it is in bad condition, about 1/3 is gone. The leaves are so brittle it can't be handled. It was buried in the earth when the Bibles were being burned in England, and has been in the Warburton Family for hundreds of years, and my father's great-grandfather, also my father's grandfather, & my grandfather of my father said it must stay in the Warburton Family.

Well, Lill has tried many ways to get it. Well, I told them it was to be kept in the Warburton Family & I intended to send it to you. There is another book which gives some of the history of the Warburton Family, written by grandfather (the fine writing) and my own father. Grandfather's name was John, his father's name was Peter, and my father's name George.

I will send these books to you. I believe father prized these books above everything he had & they are only keepsakes. When Harry visited here, I spoke to him about taking the old Bible. He said he thought he had better not take it, and for me to keep it. Pa kind a felt that good luck stayed with the old Bible, and hope it proves so to you. I think God has been very good to me, and caring for me. Of course I am living on a pension, but I still own my own home, but it is getting run down. People are good to me. Tell Dora I got a small ball of rug yarn, but it is not enough, but I am hoping to finish her long delayed rug if I can find another skein of yarn. How are Dora & Edna? The trees have lost most of their leaves. We had a continued dry spell, but now we have had a nice rain & frosts.

Hope to send the books about the first. Write soon to your loving Aunt Belle.

PROGRESSIVE MEN OF SOUTHERN IDAHO - Pages 195-7

JOHN P. PORTER - Not only a pioneer of pioneers of Bingham county, Idaho, but also one who fully demonstrated his patriotism and loyalty to his country by serving faithfully as a soldier in the great Civil war, and who is now pleasantly and prosperously located near Blackfoot, Idaho, John P. Porter is certainly entitled to something more than a mere mention in any volume treating of the progressive and representative men of the state. He was born on June 14, 1844, in the rough coal-mining county of Sullivan, Pa., being a son of Latney and Sophronia (Brown) Porter. The father, a son of William Porter, was born in 1806, in the state of New York, and in early life came to Sullivan county, Pa., then thickly covered with forest, and, being an energetic and public spirited individual, he was not only engaged in extensive farming and lumbering operations, but was prominent in the Whig and Republican parties of his place and period. The mother of our subject was a native of Massachusetts, and she is still living in vigorous mental and physical health at the age of seventy-eight years, on the old Sullivan county homestead, being the mother of twelve children. John P. Porter was reared amid the primitive scenes and occupations connected with the establishment of civilization in the county of his birth, and was but sixteen years of age when the President's message, calling for volunteers to aid in the great struggle of the civil war, flashed over the wires of the country, and with patriotic fervor he at once enlisted, becoming a member of Company B, Fifty-eighth Infantry, serving three most momentous years in the historic Army of the Potomac, one year with the Eighteenth Army Corps, and being in many engagements and bloody battles, among them that historic one of Cold Harbor, and the bloody attack upon Petersburg, where his corps was the first in action and was also the first to plant the Union flag on Fort Harrison after its capture. In this engagement Mr. Porter was in the greatest Danger his whole military life. On June 24th, just at the close of the two hours' time in which the artillery were shelling the works at Petersburg, and while the troops were lying on the ground waiting for the signal to advance, he heard a sound, and, looking up, saw that the Confederates had charged in force and were within twenty feet of him. In the struggle which ensued two Confederates dropped dead at his head and one at his feet, but he escaped uninjured. After his honorable muster-out of service at the close of the war, Mr. Porter returned to Pennsylvania and there conducted farming and lumbering operations until 1869, when he made the first step in his westward course by going to Iowa, thirty months thereafter proceeding to Minnesota, where he remained one winter and then returned to Pennsylvania. Three years later he emigrated to Nebraska for one year's residence, becoming a citizen of Saline for one year, and from that state went to Kansas and after two years started westward across the plains with an ox team and two cows, his destination being Washington Territory.

Upon arriving at the beautiful Blackfoot River in Idaho in July, 1880, he was so pleased with the place and its surroundings, and the opportunities presented, that he here took up a homestead of 160 acres, engaged in farming and stock raising, being the pioneer agriculturist in several departments of that great industry, for he was the first to dig an irrigating ditch, the first to cultivate crops and was among the very first to plant fruit trees on the west side of the Snake River. From the very date of his arrival at this place Mr. Porter has been a forceful factor in everything that tends to the development of this section of the county and has been, as a consequence of his energetic and discriminating efforts, most highly prospered, also gaining and retaining the esteem and confidence of his associates and acquaintances. In the circles of the Republican Party he is known as an energetic worker, and he is also prominently connected with the Grand Army of the Republic organization. On September 2, 1867, Mr. Porter married with Miss Martha J. Warburton, also a native of Sullivan county, Pa., and a daughter of John and Hannah (Mullen) Warburton, her father being a native of Liverpool, England, coming to Pennsylvania at the age of eleven years, there passing his entire subsequent life as an energetic business operator and an active Republican politician. Mr. and Mrs. Porter had seven children, of whom Lillian E. and Walter E. are living, and the following are deceased: Estella, who is buried in Pennsylvania; America, who died in Iowa; an infant who passed away in Pennsylvania; Minor, who died in Kansas; Lowell, who is buried at Blackfoot, Idaho. This memoir will be, perhaps, best completed by giving a detailed account of some of the experiences in battle that were the lot of Mr. Porter during his service in the Civil war. They will speak most vividly to the people of the present generation of the perils encountered in the struggle to preserve the integrity of the Union and inculcate lessons of patriotism. The first two years of Mr. Porter's military life were passed in Virginia and North Carolina.

His regiment then moved north and participated in many bloody battles and engagements, among them that of Cold Harbor, where they were encamped on the field. They landed at Fortress Monroe on the morning of (9 Mar 1862) the day when the Monitor and the Merrimac met in their historic encounter. Going to Norfolk, they assisted in the capture of that city. Then they were at Suffolk, where they were quartered for the most part of the winter of 1862-3. In the spring of 1863 they were sent to Newbern and on to Washington, NC, in this latter place passing the winter of 1863-4. They were assigned to the Eighteenth Army Corps in the spring of 1864, joined General Butler, and were participants in the attack on Richmond which, on account of the dense fog, failed of success. On June 3, 1984, occurred the momentous battle of Cold Harbor, in which they took effective part and Mr. Porter was in great danger. On June 3d, behind the Rebels' breastworks, at break of day a charge was made, and, after being captured twice by the enemy and three times by Northern forces, Mr. Porter was struck twice by bullets, one on the arm and once on the leg, but not severely injured by either ball. He lay under fire behind the works among the dead from morning until night with his head resting against one dead man's legs, lying across another body, while another's head pressed against his side. On the 14th of June he was again in Petersburg and on June 24th, while on picket duty, between Appomattox and the Waldon Railroad, the Rebel shells played on them for two hours and then the Confederates charged in force. Mr. Porter looking up from the trench discovered the Rebels within twenty feet of him. He fell back, fired his gun at them, and in the struggle that ensued one man dropped dead across his feet, two Rebels dropped over the breastwork close by the head of Mr. Porter, and fired several shots so close to him that he could have pushed his finger into the muzzle of their guns. Later, Mr. Porter was sent to gather up prisoners and was detailed as guard in front of the breastworks. In climbing over the breastworks in fulfillment of his duty, then a very dangerous undertaking, he first put his canteen and haversack over, and, stepping back a few paces, he made a running jump and landed safely on the other side, but at the spot where he went over many bullets struck. Landing in a field of grain, after lying for a few moments he crawled away through the grain and took up his outpost duty, which he safely carried out. On the last day of September, at Fort Harrison, his brother, Miner F. Porter, was so severely injured by a shot that he died that evening. On October 17, 1864, Mr. Porter was mustered out and returned home. Two more brothers, Charles and Daniel, were in service, making four gallant soldiers for the Union from this one family."

In 1880 Fox Twp., Sullivan County, PA census, it shows living with Walter and Clara Warburton, his mother-in-law Sarah E. Warburton, age 54, b. PA, and Elnora S. Warburton, Sister-in-Law, age 11, b. PA.

Clarissa Porter's mothers name was Sarah, but the age doesn't match. The possibility exists that perhaps Clarissa's father Nathan died (West Hill Cemetery shows Nathan d. 1865), and Sarah married a Warburton.

Biographies in Bradford County History, by Bradsby;

GEORGE W.T. WARBURTON, farmer, LeRoy township, P.O. LeRoy, was born in Elkland, Sullivan Co., Pa., November 13, 1849, a son of Jesse and Elizabeth (Brown) Warburton, the former a native of Liverpool, England, and the latter of Wilton, same country. They came to this country in 1816, locating in Sullivan County, but removed to Bradford County in 1853. Mr. Warburton died in 1872, Mrs. Warburton in 1884. Their family consisted of four children-two sons and two daughters-all of whom grew to maturity. The subject of these lines, who is the youngest, was reared and educated in LeRoy. In early life he was engaged in the jeweler's trade almost ten years. On July 19, 1882, he was married at Granville to Ettie B., daughter of Philander and Rebecca Foster, and this union has been blessed with one son and one daughter: Arthur T., born December 10, 1883, and Sarah Ann, born June 27, 1887. Mr. Warburton is a farmer of considerable ability, and has always lived on the old homestead of only sixty acres; he has two carp ponds, one of which is stocked; last year he sold over twenty-six dollars worth of young carp. His farming is general, and he raises considerable wool; he holds the office of Meteorological Observer for the United States. He is a deacon in the Baptist Church; in politics he is a Republican, and is auditor.

I had been a few months back trying to locate where George might be buried. I was in contact with people in Umatilla County, Oregon. I am not sure that I did get conformation, but it is believed that George is buried next to Alvin in Olney Cemetery, OR. There is someone buried there and the family owned that plot because they had bought both when Alvin died. So (maybe it's my wishful thinking) I am assuming that he is buried there.

Sorry, I don't have anything else on the Warburtons. They are on my wife's side of the family, but no direct relationship. My father-in-law, Dale E Emory, sister Blanche A. Emory married Francis (Dutch) Thorne. Dutch was a brother to Anna Thorne. Anna married Roy Warburton.

Thanks for your information,  Richard

Hello Lyle

MERRY CHRISTMAS

All the information looks the same except for George's birthday. After I got your e-mail yesterday, I tried to find Roy after 1900 and then it came to me that I was looking for him last Year.

I called Alverda B. White (Thorne); she is the daughter of Dutch Thorne and lives in Pendleton, OR.

She didn't know anything about Anna except she had heard she had went away, but that was about 20 years before Alverta was born. I went through all of my old e-mails and found this from 2003. I haven't been in contact with her since.

I will have to look some more as I don't know where I got George's parents from.

I hope this will help you,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hi Richard,

I am so excited to "meet' someone who may know something about my great grandparents. I only met them a few times and even though we moved to Alberta in the early 70's we still was not able to see them very often. I seem to have most of the same information on the Thorne side of the family (I haven't had a chance to have a really good look yet but hope to do so soon). I only know that my great grandfather Roy Warburton had a sister and that his father's name may have been George Warburton. My great grandmother's name was Anna Myrtle. They only had one child Irene Celesta Warburton b. January 4, 1907 d. October 23, 1987 m. April 18, 1925 Harry Edward Hunter b. July 11,1902 d. October 14,1986

They had five children all still living and 15 grandchildren. Currently there is 1 great grandchild and a set of twins on the way. Myrtle as she was called was born November 25, 1887 and died at Brooks, Alberta in July 1974

Roy died in Strathmore, Alberta on January 4, sometime in the late 70's or early 80's

"I try to find the exact dates but right now don't have this information. Are you interested in the information on my aunts, uncles and cousins as I believe I have most of it.

"BROWN –NELLIE BROWN HEESS –On the morning of September 17, 2000, Nellie Brown Heess, 86 a lifelong resident of Sullivan County passed away quietly after a brief stay at Memorial Hospital of Towanda. Born on her parent’s farm just outside of Shunk June 6, 1914 she was a daughter of Liston and Anna Stull Brown.

Being a part of a farming family taught her the value of hard work and the satisfaction derived from a job well done. On November 7, 1930 at the age of 16 she was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Kermit L. Heess. Together they raised a son and five daughters and operated a dairy farm. They shared nearly 40 years together until Kermit’s passing in 1970. She was well-known for her sewing and crocheting but most of all her cooking. She was always happiest when she had a large crowd to feed. For more years than most folks can remember she ran the dining hall at the Sullivan County Fair. No one ever had to ask her twice about volunteering for this cumbersome task. She served as cook for many years at Camp Brule Scout Reservation and worked as a cook for 15 years at Our House Restaurant south of Canton. Mrs. Heess was a woman of faith, anchored to her Christian convictions. She was a lifetime member of the Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church and served for many years as secretary of the Sunday school. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Janet Heess, Shunk; daughters, Shirley Wilson, Forksville, Ella Ruth Bryan, Williamsport, Betty Lou Boxman, Sandra and Dallas Bown, Forksville, 17 grandchildren 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by brothers, Hiram and Chester Brown; sister, Mamie Randall and a daughter, Terry Lynne Heess. This email was received from Carol Brotzman on October 1, 2007 from a posting of this marriage certificate online at Ebay.com:

"Description

This is a marriage certificate dated March 17, 1867 between Rheuben D. Wilber and Angeline Brown of Fox Sullivan in the state of PA., and witnessed by S. Warburton, Margret Chrisman, another Warburton, I can't read the first name, and Wm. Campbell, J.P. It measures 12" by 15 1/2". It is back by a canvass type paper. Very nice document in nice condition, some age spots."

(Rheuben? or Reuben?. Angeline was Angeline (Warburton) Brown. I believe S. Warburton was probably Cyrus Sadler Warburton. Margaret Christman was married to Angeline's brother Albert Warburton about 1866). L.P.

Subject: [PASULLIV] WILBER - SHAVER Family Marriage Certificate

I've "rescued" an old marriage certificate belonging to Lewis N. WILBER and his bride Lillian H. SHAVER who were married in Hillsgrove, Pennsylvania on the 20th of August 1899. The ceremony was performed by Ezra S. LITTLE, the Justice of the Peace. The certificate was enclosed in an envelope addressed to Ezra S. LITTLE Esq. in Hillsgrove, PA with the return address being that of W. J. LAWRENCE, Clerk of the Court in LaPorte, PA for Sullivan County.

The name of Lewis N. WILBER is written in pencil on the front as well.

The postmark on the envelope is Apr 18 1899 suggesting that the envelope is actually older than the certificate itself.

Shelley"

Email message from Linda (Ludwig) Mutzer on October 10, 2007 which contained some information she found as well as some information she got from Helen Blow indicates Vernon's middle name "Monroe". Helen indicated that Vernon and wife adopted another child, Edward Wilber who died at a younger age. Linda found Gerald and Edward both buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, NY, but she wasn't sure that they were the same ones that were son and adopted son of Vernon. L.P.

This email was from Bob Sweeney, November 24, 2007:

Folks:

I have received and made my first go-over on the Wilber Estate collection. As you may recall, I purchased these items from Helen Blow of Aiken, SC, in lieu of having them sold piecemeal on the Internet. I am still hopeful that we may eventually recover the two wedding photos that were sold before I could get to them. Also, I believe Linda McDonald bought several pictures from this collection that I believe included one of her mom. I plan to ask her to scan them for us as well when she gets the time. Anyway, this collection has many remarkable items in it, including old psalm books and letters from the 19th century, the best collection of old postcards I have ever encountered, many old photos [in most cases labeled!!] and other odds and ends from life in the 1880s through the 1930s in the Elkland area. The families included are Shaver, Wilber, Brown, Beaumont, Lewis, Warburton, Bagley and more. There are handfuls of old tintype photos that are not labeled but we may be able to figure out who they are from comparison with labeled photos as well.

There are many, to me at least unique items, such as a soldier’s pay record from the last phase of world war one, many old postage stamps, complete transaction records between the Wilbers and several local businesses, a dialogue and records of transactions involving the sale of sheng [ginseng] and pelts to a NYC distributor, trolley and bus tickets from Elmira, NY, very touching letters about farm life, and the list goes on. My plan is to scan the important items, and take sample scans of the other materials. Then, I will ship the materials to Melly’s attention at the SCHS in Laporte. I will label the groups of items that are in there but leave it up to the museum as to how they want to organize these items. I would guess it will be the end of the year before I can get this Xmas present off to Laporte. Meanwhile, I also recently acquired about a dozen issues of the Gazette and Herald, 1919, Dushore, and will be posting select items from those papers to the message board and our pages. Then, these items as well will be going to the SCHS.

Happy Txgiving, and thanks to all…… Bob"

"ALFRED J. WILBER, 86, Canton, one of the old time railroad men of the area, passed away quietly, January 3, 1997, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Born Aug. 21, 1910 in fox Twp., he was one of nine children born to Lewis and Lillian (Shaver) Wilber. Growing up in the forest of Sullivan County, young Alfred was fascinated with railway operations of the lumber companies around Masten and Laquin, as well as the old Susquehanna and New York as it roared through Wheelerville on its run from Ralston to Dushore. When the great depression

swept across our nation, Alfred found employment in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He worked diligently in the CCC camps of the Endless Mountains planting trees and repairing roads and bridges. He began a courtship with a young lady from LeRoy named Myrtle E. Kelley, a courtship culminating in their being united in holy matrimony on Jan. 14, 1939. In the 1940’s he secured employment with the PA Railroad as a track inspector along the Elmira branch through Canton. He walked great lengths of the line looking for sign of excessive wear along the rails. He used to collect the little strips of lead which were left behind in the aftermath of a locomotive that had detonated a series of warning signal torpedoes. His sons said they made good weights for fishing. His railroad career often took him away from home to Buffalo. He retired in 1975. The Wilbers were blessed with eight children and shared 49 years together before she died in 1988. Surviving are sons; Elwood and wife, Barbara, Cecil, Lewayne and wife, Marilyn and Gary, all of Canton; daughters, Phyllis Wilber, Canton and Velma and Donald Spencer, Wellsboro; brothers, Walter, Elmira and Walker, Canton; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by son, Lewis a daughter, Dorothy, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at the Morse and Kleese funeral Home, Canton. Interment was in Grover Cemetery. –Canton Independent Sentinel."

Uncle John as I knew him, was a very honest and hard working man. Although he had that rough manly manner about him underneath we all knew he was as soft as a teddy bear. I have many wonderful memories of this loving man. He had a love for the King family history and it was a joy for him to share with anyone that had an interest. The family’s loss is great. He was the second son of Ralph & Mae (Warburton) King, my father Walter the eldest, Donne King the youngest child is the sole survivor of their eight children. The King family has resided in the Sullivan County area since 1801 and many descendants still reside in the Sullivan County area. Now he's on his way to tell the stories of the younger generations to the ancestors.

The following email is from Connie (King) LaGrega on December 29, 2006 which she wrote to me regarding a few questions I had as to some of the descendants of John L. King listed in his obituary: "Lorin;

Yes it's been awhile since we spoke. I hate the new message boards. You can't see anything unless you click on everything, and how many people are going to do that except people like us.

Uncle John & Aunt Beulah's children:

John II is the oldest. I knew his wife's name but never wrote it down & they are divorced for quite a few years now, his son John III is married to a Kimberly, I don't know her maiden name, Brock is their son. Sheila is next, married a Myers, they are missionaries, for one of the churches in the Hughesville area. Next is Alex, his wife was named Connie also, she died a couple of years ago. They had no children. The youngest is Greta, we stay in touch very often. She was married to Keith Richard Evans. Before the divorce they lived on land her father gave her next to his house in Hughesville. Danielle K. & Kayla J. are their teenage daughters.

Donne's wife is Marion Stieger. Her mother use to own the hotel in Nordmont, after her father died, her mother rented rooms to hunters for awhile. I can remember playing in all the different rooms and in the creek out back as a child. Her mother was a Peterman and I think it was her family that had the Hotel first. I am not sure if it's still there, it was on the right just across from the bridge, next to Van Dynes store. Kyle G. Hoffman, is John III's step son (wife's son.). Thanks for posting the obit you did. Aunt Beulah is sending me a copy because I hadn't seen it yet. Uncle John had Leukemia for three years before he died & he made his doctor promise not to tell the family when he found out. They only found out after his death. They knew he had things wrong because he took a lot of medicine, but he didn't want them to know and worry. The doctor said his heart and Lungs were that of a much younger man, his kidneys failed because of the disease. He didn't smoke, drink alcohol, soft drinks or eat junk food. I am sure when my father and him were younger they drank but since his children were born I never heard of him drinking. He swore like a truck driver that was an outstanding trait he had, but it was all just his way of talking because he would do anything he could for anyone and he helped so many people. His Uncle Tom who lived on his father's (Lemuel King) homestead until his health failed was sort of the black sheep of the King clan, he stayed on the mountain an very seldom came down, wore the same bib overhauls that needed a serious washing all the time, we all loved this old man even though he was different and rough, when his health failed Uncle John brought him home to his house to live and die. Everyone said he was a nasty old man near the end, but that didn't matter to Uncle John he was family.

Connie"
