Notes for John Hoffman:
In 1823, John moved to Middle Smithfield, now Monroe County, PA. He cleared the land and made it a farm, and
a home for his family. There could have been as many as eleven children. John's life was cut short on April 11,
1876 when he was struck by a train crossing the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad tracks with his carriage.
In 1850, the value of his property was $300.00. The Hoffman property was very close to the property of Jacob and
Sarah Stroud, thus making it very possible that Sarah Stroud, wife of John Hoffman, was their child.
Many of the Hoffman family did move to the Bradford County, PA area. That might be the reason why John Hoffman's death
notice appeared in the Bradford County Argus for May 4, 1876.

from our contributor, Carol Brotzman.
Notes for Alfred Possinger:
The Possinger family information was found in the diaries of Leo and Sarah "Ella" Crawford
Bolles of West Auburn, Susquehanna County, PA. Leo was a great historian of the Laceyville
area. Leo was first married to Ella's sister Bertha Crawford, then married
Ella on December 17, 1936 in Johnson City, Broome County, NY; the Reverend Fred C. Lott presiding. They lived on
the Lone Pine Farm, West Auburn, Susquehanna County, PA. Bertha and Ella were daughters of Gershom Bunnell and Sarah Ellen (Green) Crawford.
Gershom in turn was the son of Benjamin and Catherine (Bunnell) Crawford. Finally, Benjamin was the son of
Benjamin Noah and Olive (Carpenter) Crawford. In fact, this branch of the Crawford family is
related by blood to the Crawfords that married the Thrasher, Sayman and Hunsinger families in
Sullivan County, PA, described elsewhere on this site under Faces and Families of Sullivan
County (Group One).
Here are two pictures of the couple, one taken on July 25, 1937, and the second on September 4, 1947.

West Auburn Church 1949 West Auburn, Susquehanna County, PA The Possingers and Bolles were members and officers.
The photo was taken when they raised the church up on its new foundation. In the early 1980's, the
church burned down, so the photo is very rare.
