History of the Washington County PAGenWeb
The first PAGenWeb Washington County PA coordinator was Jean Suplick Matuson [who also developed Chartiers.com]. Other county coordinators were Georgeann Malowney [who now hosts the Chartiers site] and Peggy
Tebbetts, followed by Christina Hunt.
Keeping with the policies and philosophy of the PAGenWeb Project, The Washington County PAGenWeb Project aims to provide FREE genealogy, resources, and tips to genealogists searching within Washington County PA. This web-site is non-commercial; all data is provided freely and free for your personal use. No part of the Washington Co PAGenWeb should be copied for any commercial endeavor but parts may be used in personal genealogy. As with citing any genealogy source, giving credit in your work to the website is appreciated.
Current Webmaster
Judith Florian took over the web site in 2006 at the request of Christina
Hunt. Judy was born and raised in the City of Washington, PA but now lives
in northeast Ohio. She learned to do genealogy from her grandmother in the
early 1980s, when the Court House still housed all of its materials rather than
spread over two counties and many buildings (and an abandoned mine). Although
record storage has changed, the basics of research have not changed. One
of Judy's talents is writing Help articles about genealogy to help the beginner
to experienced researcher. However, Judy cannot do personal research since
she no longer lives in the county. As the sole webmaster, she works on
submissions as she is able to do so.
What areas does this site cover
The site attempts to provide genealogical information from any dates and any
areas within Washington County.
Submissions
As a genealogy and informational repository for the County, this project accepts
submissions as well as including information the webmaster has collected over
the years through her personal or ongoing research. The webmaster accepts all
types of genealogy data and photos. All submissions must be typed and must
include the name of the submitter, your E-mail address if you want it included
on the page(s), the source information and location where you found the
data. For example, a Will must include the name of the deceased, a Will
Book Number and Page Number, and the Court House location where you found the
Will. A photo must give the person's name (or unknown), locations where
the person resided, and an approximate date.
You Can Help
Besides submissions, *you* can help the county web site in many ways. Report
broken links or web pages with missing graphics (the dreaded "red
x"). Report typos, which creep into work no matter how often work is
reviewed. Although most "date" problems occurred in the
collection of data, report when dates or information don't make sense (example:
a death date before the person was even born). And, if you find your ancestor's
data on this web site, consider sending a brief write-up or comment to include
on the page. The webmaster also needs typists for newspaper articles or
for large projects.
