Location:  The "Byers' Burying Ground" is located near the Burnsville Road in East Finley Township.  At the time of the Caldwell's Atlas of Washington County the grave yard was on the D. Tilton (Daniel Tilton) farm. Later the land was owned by George Tilton and in the 1950s the farm was run by George Litman.  The graves in the 1950s were unfenced but clean. There were at that time about 12 stones, but at one time there seems to have been 2 or 3 dozen graves."   Eagleson wrote, "A large number of dead have been buried in this ground and most of the graves have become obliterated."

Background:  The farm on which Thomas Byers raised his family was owned by William Worrell near whose residence stood the Byers home, where some of the remains of the house may yet be seen. This and the land on which the burial ground is located, are parts of a tract of land named "Stone Coal" in the original patent, and on the South-western fork of Buffalo Creek. In the early records of the Presbytery of Redstone is mentioned of "supplications for supplies" from 1781 to 1793 and the one is from the "Stone Coal Fork of Buffalo".  This as a preaching point was most likely absorbed by "Three Ridges" or West Alexander. There is a tradition that the Burying ground belonged to the Presbyterian church. (Easleson, 1908)

More Information:  The census of stones located in the Byers Grave Yard or Byers Burial Ground have been recorded at least 5 times:  (1) A. S. Easleson -- Washington Reporter 1908  (2)  Published in "East & West Finley Twp. Cemeteries". Copy in genealogical collection at Citizens Library, Washington, PA.  (3) Miss Helen Scott, Box 146, Claysville, Pa. for the Historical Society Nov. 20, 1956.  (4) Joseph "Bud" Florian Jr. in May 1972; Bud was active with the SW PA Genealogical Society; and (5) research of Helen Borkowski.  Each of these recordings differ in some ways, so researchers should compare each source along with other types of research.  See  Helen Borkowski's work for more details.
