Background: According to Boyd Crumrine’s, "History of Washington County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men" (Philadelphia: L. H. Leverts & Co., 1882), the Florence cemetery dates from around 1799 when the church at Kings Creek was moved to Cross Roads (later named Florence). In this old ground, many of the old settlers in this section of country were buried. The Rev. Robert Fulton, who founded the Florence Academy in 1832, died Aug. 20, 1842, in Wellsburg, Va., in the 38th year of his age, and was buried
at in this cemetery at Cross Roads/Florence PA. The Rev. Elisha McCurdy was buried here, and the following is inscribed upon his tombstone:
"In memory of the Rev. Elisha McCurdy, Late Pastor of the Congregation of Cross Roads. Born October 15th, 1763. Licensed June 24th, 1799. Ordained and Installed Pastor June, 1800. A Pastor 35 years and minister of the Gospel 46 years. Died July 22d, 1845. He took an active part in the great revival of 1802, and was distinguished for his zealous labors in the cause of Indian Missions."
Census: This data was collected by the DAR and found in the genealogy section of the Washington PA library. The data is from 1937 so the burial records may not be complete.
Published in "Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Washington Co., PA." Vol. 1, 1939. Copies in genealogical collection at Citizens Library and Washington Law Library in Washington, PA.
More Information: An enumeration of tombstones and transcriptions of various church records are contained in the booklet titled "Florence (Cross Roads) Presbyterian Church (Originally Kings Creek), Washington Co., PA" by Robert C. and Agnes D. Kreutzberg, pub. 1986.
Order the booklet from the authors at 253 Virginia Ave., Chester, VA 26034 for $12.
Note: The Paris Presbyterian Church web site states: "In November of 2005, the Florence Presbyterian Church merged with the Paris Presbyterian Church. A celebration service was held at that time to welcome all of Florence members to our flock (abbreviated quote)."
