OLD GERMAN LUTHERAN CEMETERY

German Lutheran Cemetery

The cemetery of the Old German Lutheran Church is located in northern Somerset Township, Washington County, PA. It can be reached by the Kammerer Exit off Rt. 70, turn west onto Carlton Dr., turn up hill on the gravel road between Seal and Edgar Roads, at Y bear right toward white wooden fence. There should be a small sign along Carlton Dr., “Old German Lutheran Cemetery”.
The church was destroyed by a fire many years ago and only the cemetery remains. Many of the headstones were damaged and some destroyed by cows from the nearby farm until descendants of those buried in the cemetery erected a fence to protect it.
According to Crumrine, Boyd, "History of Washington County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men" (Philadelphia: L. H. Leverts & Co., 1882), pp. 931-951:
“It is not known at what time the church was organized, but a warrant for sixteen acres and twenty-five perches of land was obtained on 15th of January, 1816, by Jacob Kintner, John Oustott, and George Miller, trustees, "for the use of German Lutheran and Calvinistic Congregations of Somerset township." This land was patented Feb. 27, 1833. A log church was erected soon after the warrant was obtained. A portion of the ground was used for a burial-place. The old church was taken down many years ago, and a new one erected of brick on the site.
The following census of the cemetery was taken by Clarence Oliver and Isabelle Mitchell Sumney, of Eighty Four, PA in 1974:
This table shows 108 burials + 4 small stones + 9 possible burials
