Background: This graveyard is one of the oldest in the county. The South Buffalo Presbyterian Church was formed about 1800 at the site of the graveyard.
According to Boyd Crumrine’s "History of Washington County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men" (Philadelphia: L. H. Leverts & Co., 1882), “In connection with the church lot there is a graveyard, first used as such about the year 1811, and now crowded with graves.” Many of the old stones are crumbled now, some barely above the ground and many unreadable.
In 1887, the church congregation moved to Claysville and was then called the Claysville Presbyterian Church. Many graves from the original cemetery on Sunset Beach Road were also removed to the Claysville Cemetery.
According to the DAR records, this is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county and was operational when the church was found around 1811 at the site of the graveyard. In 1887, the South Buffalo UP church was moved to Claysville and was called the Claysville UP Church.
They said “the cemetery is in fair condition, rather isolated close by the roadside. Many of the old stones are crumbled down, some barely above the ground and many are not readable. Several of the older table-stones are falling if not down all together. Many of the graves have been moved to the Claysville Incorporated Cemetery.”
Census: This data was collected by the DAR and found in the genealogy section of the Washington PA library. The data is from 1938 but the burial records are likely complete.
Published in "Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Washington County, PA", Vol. 3, 1937. Copy in genealogical collection at Citizens Library and Washington Law Library in Washington, PA.
More Information: According to the church’s records, the South Buffalo United Presbyterian Church was also referred to as the Greene Street United Presbyterian Church.
There are 147 interments listed along with 4 Revolutionary War Soldiers: Alexander Craig, James Hutcheson, James Auld, David Auld. 1 War of 1812 soldier: William Sawhill; 2 Civil War soldiers: George Knox, Thomas Marshall. The earliest interment was in 1811.
