Aerial Photo of Washington Cemetery

Contributed by Midge Ryan Doucet

NOTE: Older view.  The original entrance, still in use, is about 500 feet up from Trinity High School's driveway (not shown in this photo).  Many postcards are in circulation showing a woman walking in front of the cemetery gate, on a (then) dirt road (Park Ave.), just below the rise in the road.  Inside this entrance is the main office.  Going to the left at the office is access to grave sites, both older and newer.  Going to the right, you will see many mausoleums off to the left of the curving lane.  On this lane, you would first pass a newer caretaker garage where they store equipment.  Then you'd pass a dilapidated, and unused for years, caretaker house.  The lane then goes down a hill leading toward the newer entrance.  This new (second) entrance is further down the Park Avenue, if you look at the far right, bottom, of this photo.  [The new entrance is not so new anymore, having been put in many years ago.]   Beside the new entrance is the pond, which attracts wildlife and is home to duck families. Past the pond, you can either go up a grade and around a lane on the right, which turns left as it goes up the hill.  Or just past the pond are other lanes going to the left to access other sections.  The cemetery is larger than shown in this picture, extending further north and west.  The office maintains maps of the different sections of the cemetery; without a map it is easy to get confused as you travel the different lanes.  The cemetery is maintained throughout the year.
