1810 CENSUS ORIGINAL LISTING OF NAMES

Notes from Liz:   As near as I can tell, there are no other census listings for any geographical area in Washington County, PA for 1810. I'm guessing that any towns/cities were lumped in with a township but, unlike in later census records, there is no post office designation to know for sure what was where.

An added note.. In some cases, the alpha listing from Heritage Quest had slightly different spellings for some of the surnames within the county, but for the life of me I could not see where they determined that was the spelling so I went with what I thought the surname was. My advice to one and all would be to look at the actual filming of a given name and make up their own mind if that could be their ancestor. A lot of times, 'e', 'c', and 'i' all were formed the same; 'a' and 'o' looked a whole lot alike; as did 'k' and 'h', 'R' and 'B'. On the whole, the census takers for the 1810 census in Washington County, wrote neatly, better than I've seen in some other census records.

1810 CENSUS ALPHABETICAL

Hi Judy,

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who didn't know this, but I just discovered a mix-up on Ancestry.com's 1810 census images for Washington County. They only show one page for West Bethlehem...p.688. On the top half of this page is the end of East Bethlehem's listing, the bottom half has the start of West Bethlehem. When one goes to the pages for East Bethlehem, Ancestry.com has all of them there EXCEPT for this last page which is half east and half west...then, still in the section for East Bethlehem, they have the remainder of West Bethlehem's pages. So if someone wants to browse through the census images on Ancestry.com for East or West Bethlehem they will need to look under both designations to see all the pages.. Confusing? You bet! At least the listing, when I finish it, will be correct on your web site...and the images are correctly listed on Heritage Quest, though HQ makes it very difficult to go directly to just East or West Bethlehem.

Cheers!
Liz
