Ruth Sprowls did some BLACKA research for this page. She found this obituary:
| EVENING TIMES, CUMBERLAND, MD., MONDAY, APRIL 15, 1963 PAGE SIXTEEN HENRY W. BLACKA Henry W. Blacka, 69, of 219 Grand Avenue, died Saturday in Memorial Hospital following an illness of several years. A resident of Cumberland for the past 30 years he was a retired B&0 conductor. He was born on May 9, 1893 in Uniontown, Pa. and was a son of the late Robert and Sarah L. (Knotts) Blacka. [ Note: A marriage date of Aug 25, 1887 for parents would make Henry's birth reasonable.] He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Cumberland Aerie 245, Fraternal Order of Eagles. Besides his wife, Mrs. Leota C. Brown) Blacka, he is survived by a son, Henry L. Blacka, St. Louis Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. William Stevenson and Mrs. Rella M. Keller, both of Cumberland. Also surviving are two brothers Donald Blacka, Stewart, Fla. and Hugh
Blacka, Weirton, W. Va., two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Bittner Miami, Fla. and Mrs. Eva Cook Homestead, Fla. and seven grand |
Ruth Sprowls also found a 1939 Obituary for Sarah L. Blacka and for another son.
Source Information:
These marriages from 1885-1889 were taken from original volumes housed at and copied by the Pa Archives for online use. (*The website states: "The original records extend beyond this date, to 1991...")
These records are often called "Marriage Returns", meaning someone (usually the preacher) reported to the Court House Clerk, "Yep, they actually got hitched."
Getting a marriage license does not a marriage make. (And, licenses were not required this early.)
