Bronze Medal For Former Roscoe Man

First Lieutenant John PIRIBEK, 33, motor transport officer of the 489th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion (SP has been cited for meritorious service in combat and awarded the Bronze Star by order of Brigadier General William M. HOGE, commanding the Fourth Armored Division.

The citation reads in part: "The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to First Lieutenant John PIRIBEK, Coast Artillery Corps, Headquarters Battery, 489th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion , U.S. Army, for meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy from July 17, 1944, to February 18, 1945, in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.  During combat, when elements of his command were widely dispersed, First Lieutenant PIRIBEK utilized excellent judgment in being at the right place at the right time.  Often called forward to pick up knocked out equipment, sometimes under direct enemy fire, he contributed much to the combat efficiency of the battalion.  The courage and devotion to duty displayed by First Lieutenant PIRIBEK reflects great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States."

The former Corning Glass factory foreman entered the Army April 22, 1942, and was commissioned a second lieutenant, October 16, 1942.  Promoted to his present rank October 16, 1942, Lt. PIRIBEK has been overseas more than a year with his organization.  He participated in the Fourth Armored Division's race across France after the Normandy breakthrough, the relief of the encircled American garrison at Bastogne, and the crack tank's division's spectacular drive into central Germany.

Lt. PIRIBEK is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John PIRIBEK of Bentleyville [Pa].
