DUNN, Dr. Stuart D. - 79, Dartmouth, died July 11, 1998, suddenly at home. Born in Pictou, he was a son of the late Dr. George A. and Janet Claire (O'Brien) Dunn. A silver medalist at Pictou Academy, he graduated from Mount Allison University with a bachelor of arts degree, he then graduated from Dalhousie Medical School with an MD in 1943. He completed 2 years of surgical residency at Montreal General Hospital, where he met a nurse who would become his wife. He returned to Pictou to take over his father's general medical practice which he continued until 1959. He joined the Department of Health as medical director of the Northumberland Health Unit where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He was an avid curler and golfer involved in many local organizations including a term as president of the Pictou Golf Club. He was an accomplished pianist and took particular pride in serving as musical director for numerous rotary musical productions. His favorite productions were Oliver and Oklahoma. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Medical Society and upon his retirement was appointed as an honorary life member of both the Sutherland-Harris Memorial Hospital Board and the local Victorian Order of Nurses. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Fernande (Fournier); daughter Michele Brennan (Dan); sons, Barrie (Caitlyn), Kim (Stephanie); grandchildren, Zachary, Emily and Tristan and step-grandson, Maxwell. He was predeceased by brother, Fred. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev. James Haughn officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
