NEARING, H. Joseph (Joe) - 68, 54 Clairemont Ave., Stellarton, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at his home. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late Joseph and Clem (MacDougall) Nearing. He was a lifelong resident of Stellarton. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, where he had been an altar boy and had sang in the church choir. In his earlier years, he had worked for Sobeys and later at Hawker Siddeley. He then joined the Air Force after which he returned to work at Trenton Works from where he retired. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, New Glasgow. He had his own band called, Joe Nearing Orchestra, and was an avid fiddle player and instrumentalist. He was an avid sportsman and gardener. He is survived by his wife, the former Phyllis Campbell; sister, Irene (Mrs. Ronald Christensen), Alma; brother, B. Douglas, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews; great-niece, Emily; aunt, Margaret MacLellan, Stellarton; uncle, John MacDougall, Riverton. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a half-sister, Margaret Demont. His remains will rest in H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, with visitation today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Sydney Mifflen officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to Aberdeen Hospital, palliative care unit, or the charity of one's choice.
