Brief History of Wieliczka This remarkable town, just southeast of Krakow, has one of the local landmarks not on the surface but far beneath the earth's surface. Salt mining has been in operation here since the 13th century. The mine has nine levels and goes down to a depth of 984 feet(300m). Tourists are taken into the salt mine by elevator to view underground chapels that house huge statues, altar rails and chandeliers carved from rock salt by the miners. There is even a museum, ballroom and tennis court. The salt-laden air of the mines helps asthma patients breathe more easily and there is a special sanatorium in the mines for them.
In the 13th century a king's castle was built here. The castle was used to control salt, kept safe in the castle from outsiders. It was destroyed towards the end of WW II, but it's main part, a four sided figure (not square or rectangle), wasn't destroyed.
