Spiczyn

Spiczyn is a small village to the northeast of the city of Lublin, it is the chief village in the gmina of the same name, which in turn is part of Leczna powiat. Off on the eastern side there is a smaller community, Spiczyn Kolonia, an outpost of the main village. It is mainly built on some slightly higher land near the confluence of the Bystrzyca and Wierpz rivers, the poorer end of the village being located on a small bluff overlooking the flat bottomed Bystrzyca river valley by a mere few metres. Although seemingly out in the middle of nowhere, there seems to be a large lorry or bus going through every couple of minutes, as well as many cars and vans.

A wooden cottage at the eastern end of Spiczyn

Betwen the current gmina offices and the dworek is this wooden cottage.

In recent times they have built a new school and a small office block as the gmina office. Both of these are at the eastern end of the village, on the Kijany road. The bus stops in the town are just opposite the gmina building. Heading west you pass some wooden cottages and then on the corner there is a former dworek (small manor house) dangerously positioned on the sharpest corner in the village. It was built in the middle of the 19th century, all in wood, but it seems to be just waiting the day a lorry doesn't quite manage the bend. Sadly, since the Second World War it has been in sad decline, spending its days as a gmina office, police station and library. They have all gone and now half of it is used as a shop selling household cleaning materials. The floor is badly warn and uneven, which even the linoleum covering cannot disguise, and everything shows years of a lack of care. The porch still stands, and if it were not for the noise of the lorries it would be a great place just to sit.

Next to this is a cube shaped 1970's style shop, behind which is what looks like a former school. The last building before the Spiczyn Kol. turn off is a post office and fire station combined. Right on the corner is a mid 19th century wooden kapliczka, or roadside shrine.

This was probably built as the local school, now part of the complex is the local vetinarians.

The road now has several bends as it heads for the downslope to the Bystrzyca valley floor. Here there are many cottages and small farms, and it looks like this was the former center of the village. The centre has artificially moved to the eastern end with the building of the school and gmina office there. There is also what looks like the remains of a small village green in the old center.

More cottages, in the centre of the village

At the very western end you can see the steep slopes down to the valley floor, and the village appears to peter out. Not so, if you take the side tracks off the main road this point you will find that there are dense areas of cottages and small farms here, hidden by trees.

At the poorer, western end of the village are many small farms and cottages all packed closely together.
