Swidnik is a new town built close to Lublin. although at first sight
it might not seem interesting other than as an example of a post war Polish
city with its usual ranks of grey concrete blocks of flats and other buildings,
it has, in fact, some hidden charms.
Swidnik, like many new towns in Poland, was a good opportunity for
many people to escape from the country and to start a new life in a town
working in a new factory with their own place to live and the better opportunities
their for their children.
This is
the main street in Swidnik, and it is lined with Socialist neoclassic public
buildings erected in the 1950's.
Swidnik
has this helicopter, manufactured in the local helicopter company, mounted
at a junction on the main road into the town. In the background is the
farmland that surrounds the town.
Very common
suburban type housing, with the ever popular boxes and hanging baskets.
This is
an electricity sub-station. The electricity company allows someone to grow
vegetables in the same enclosure.
