Modliborzyce
This is a village, with some aspects of a town, on the edge of Roztocze in the Sandomierz valley. It was established in the 15th century and gained town rights in 1642. The Roman Catholic parish church was built in 1664, but rebuilt at a later date. In 1674, the town had a population of 146, including 34 Jews. There is a two storey brick synagogue in the Baroque style from 1760, was burnt down in WW2, was restored between 1958 and 1964 and now serves as a general cultural centre for the district. By 1921, the population had risen to 1913, 937 being Jewish. By the end of WW2, there were few, if any Jewish inhabitants left. There are many interesting wooden buildings in Modliborzyce from the turn of the 20th century, surrounding the square town square.
