Łęczna (Leczna)
Leczna
Leczna, the town, is situated some 25 km east of Lublin. The older
part of the town is built on a hill between the rivers Wieprz and Swinka.
Leczna has been in existence since the 12th century, but only became a
town in 1467 when permission was granted by the king for a town to be built.
for many centuries Leczna flourished as a centre of trade, particularly
in horses and cattle. The town grew, with fine houses around the market
square, a town hall and a castle soon being built. Leczna suffered economic
stagnation in the 19th century when the whole region was annexed by Russia.
As with many of the towns in the region, about half of the population was
Jewish, but few were to survive the second world war. Since that time,
Leczna has grown, and in the 1970's there were high hopes of still greater
growth when the government promised the town would be the centre of the
regions new found coal mining industry. However, of the many mines planned,
only 2 were ever built.
New Leczna
These days, Leczna is in two halves: the older part which is in a state
of general decay, and the newer half of blocks of flats built in the 70's
for the miners. There are 2 small places to eat and drink, one by the coach
station in the new part of the town, and the other (Anenka) and better
one in the old part behind the post office/town guard/Sokul youth club
building. However, bear in mind that away from the cities in Poland, service
may restricted on Sundays as most eating customers will be at home.
On the other side of the Swinka river is a small part of the town that
basically served the commune farm, PKR. For some strange reason, there
are lots of large concrete dinosaurs here - Leczna's own Jurassic Park.
Some of the homes have been bought by those living there, and these can
often be distinguished by the plastic cladding they put on the exterior
walls.
CHURCH 1: Parafia rzymskokatolicka św. Marii Magdaleny, Świętoduska
2, Łęczna, woj. Lubelskie. A late Baroque style parish church from 1631.
This church has many benches outside and speakers for people outside ot
hear the mass, as the interior of the church is quite small. It is very
pleasant
to sit under the old trees on a hot day - so long as the mosquitoes don't
get you

SYNAGOGUE: This baroque synagogue, from 1648, still survives
in good condition, but these days it is used as the town museum with a
special emphasis on the Jews who used to live there (and is worth a visit).

unmarried women living there.
Łuszczów Kol. (Luszczow Kol.)
A village on a straight lane, with some outlying farmsteads. The land
is almost flat, open and arable, with minor highway 831 forming the northern
boundary of the settlement area. There are a series of small woods, and
a fair sized one forming the southern boundary.

that form a T shape in an area of almost flat, open arable land. Minor
highway 829 forms the northern boundary of the settlement area, and just
beyond this highway is the Wieprz river.
Osiedle Pasternik Wschodni
This is a completely new settlement, established not much earlier than
about 1980. It is a 'new' suburb of Leczna designed to house the influx
of people since coal mining was established in the area in about 1975.
The land is relatively flat, open and arable, and the built up area lies
on the opposite side of minor highway 831 from the main part of Leczna.
Immediately to the east is a small wood.
Piotrówek II (Piotrowek II)
A scattering of farmsteads across gently undulating open arable land,
on land either side of a country road and immediately east of a large wood.
Podzamcze
Although the name indicates that this settlement was located next to
a castle, there is no sign of a castle on any map I have seen. The settlement
consists of a scattering of farmsteads across an area of relatively flat,
open arable land, mainly on the west side of minor highway 820. There is
a small wood at the southern end of the settlement area. During communist
times, most of the land was part of a communal farm.
Rossosz
A few scattered farmsteads between a country road and the Wieprz river.
The land is relatively flat, and slopes gently down to the river, which
forms the eastern boundary of the settlement area.
Stara Wieś (Stara Wies)
Mainly a scattering of farmsteads just north of Leczna. There is a
wood at the southeastern corner of the settlement area, but most of the
land is relatively flat, open and arable.
Stara Wieś Kol. (Stara Wies Kol.)
A scattering of farmsteads over an area of relatively flat open land
that is partly arable and partly meadows. It lies on the east side of minor
highway 820 and there are a series of streams running through the meadows.
Stasin
A scattering of farmsteads on relatively flat, open arable land. There
is a small wood at the southwestern corner of the settlement area.
Trębaczów (Trebaczow)
A relatively dense scattering of farmsteads for this powiat. The land
is gently undulating, open and arable, with a couple of streams running
through the settlement area.
Witaj
A scattering of farmsteads across a relatively flat piece of open arable
land. Minor highway 831 from the southern boundary of the settlement area.
Witaniów (Witaniow)
A scattering of many farmsteads in an area of almost flat, open arable
land. Minor highway passes north-south through the western end of the settlement
area and there is a wood on the southeastern edge.
Witanów (Witanow)
Not to be confused with Witaniow, this settlement lies a few kilometres
to the south of the above. It consists of a few houses and farmsteads mainly
either side of minor highway 813. The land is relatively flat, open and
arable.
Zakrzów (Zakrzow)
A small group of houses and a few outlying farmsteads on the south
side of the Stoki river. The land is relatively flat, open and arable.
At the eastern edge of the main settlement area is minor highway 829, which
has two bridges crossing the Stoki. On the other side of the highway is
an area of meadowlands.
Zofiówka (Zofiowka)
A scattering of farmsteads on land on either side of minor highway
831 in an area of relatively flat, open arable land.
