12. Bychawa

The Gmina of Bychawa
This gmina is based on the valley of the Kosarzewka river, which flows from south to north through the middle of the gmina, part of the Gielczew Upland. The gmina covers an area of 147 sq.km and has a population of 13000. There is a tradition of horse breeding here. Where the Kosarzewka and Galezowka rivers join there are many notable sandstone mounds, steep sided valleys and gullies.

Abramów (Abramow)
A few houses and a couple of farmsteads on the right bank of the Kosarzewka river, on the opposite side to Zdrapy. The land is open and arable, and there is a copse between the village and the river.
Biesiadki
A few farmsteads along a straight track in an area of open, undulating arable land. There is a gully with a stream at the bottom at the southeastern end of the village. Olszowiec is 2 km to the west.
Bychawa
A town with a parish church dating from 1639 with Baroque features and spire, but with a large Classical extension. There is a wooden bell tower from 1862 and there are many interesting wooden houses from the 19th century. It is located at the joining of a stream from the east with the Kosarzewka river, on the flat land between the two. The first mention of the village was in 1325 when it was said there was a Roman Catholic parish here. Bychawa gained town rights in 1557, and lost them in 1869. Gaining of the town rights allowed a fair to be held here every tuesday. This was a centre of the Protestant movement in the 17th century with many synods held here. There is the ruins of a castle next to the lake. Every summer there is a competition as to who cooks the best pierogi.

Bychawka I
A village on the west bank of the Kosarzewka river, with a church and a cemetery at the south end. It is located at the edge of the valley bottom, between it and the river are meadows, the valley sides are open and arable. There is a bridge over the river at the north end of the village, and another at the southern end, close to the church.

CEMETERY: no data. Just opposite the church, has its own chapel.
Bychawka II
Just to the south of Bychawka I and in much the same condition. On the south side of the village is a small wood. There is a bridge over the river in the middle of the village.
Bychawka III
Some houses and a few farmsteads on the opposite side of the river from Bychawka I, a few hundred meters downstream (to the north). It is located on the lower slopes of the valley side, with meadows between it and the river. There is a bridge over the river at the south end of the settlement.
Bychawka II Kol.
Some scattered farmsteads over the valley side on the east side of the Kosarzewka river valley. On the opposite side of the river is Bychawka II, Bychawka I is 2 km to the northwest.
Bychawka III Kol.
Some houses on the country road running alongside the Kosarzewka river on the east bank, plus scattered farmsteads up the sides of the valley. The land is open and arable, and there are a couple of woods higher up the valley sides. Bychawka I is on the opposite side of the river.
Gałęzów (Galezow)
A village on the minor highway 834, in the valley of the Kosarzewka river in its upper reaches. The valley sides rise to the east and west of the village. The land is open and arable and there is a small wood on the south side of the village. There are also some farmsteads on lanes rising up the valley sides on either side. There is a manor house here.
Gałęzów Kol. I (Galezow Kol I)
Some houses and farmsteads along a country lane on the hills between the Bystrzyca and Kosarzewka rivers. The land is undulating and arable, and there are woods just to the east and west. Galezow is 4 km to the east.

Gałęzów Kol. II (Galezow Kol. II)
Houses and farmsteads along a straight east-west lane on the hills between the Bystrzyca and Kosarzewka river, 1.5km south of Galezow I, 4 km west of Galezow. There are woods to the east and west at the ends of the village.
Grodzany
A few houses along a country lane on the southwest side of Bychawa, and on the west bank of the Kosarzewka river. The land is open and arable.
Józwów (Jozwow)
A string of farmsteads along a country lane on the hills above the Kosarzewka river, to the west of the river. The land is undulating and arable, and there is a wood 500m to the north, and a smaller one just to the west. Wola Galezowska is 1.5km to the east.
Józwów Kol. (Jozwow Kol.)
About 5 farmsteads along a straight section of lane, all on the south side as it is a wood on the north side of the lane. The land is undulating and arable. Jozwow is 500m to the south, across the fields, and Wola Galezowska is 1.5km to the east.
Kąty (Katy)
Few farmsteads on a country lane in ana area of undulating, open arable land. There is a wood just to the west of the settlement. Stara Wies is 4 km to the west and 1 to the south.
Kopanina
Some farmsteads along a short lane in an area of open arable land. There are 2 copses south of the settlement and a wood to the southeast. Stara Wies is 2.5km to the southwest across the fields.
Kosarzew Dolny Kol.
Houses and some farmsteads along a lane, on the southwest side of a stream. On the other side of the stream is a large wood, and there is another wood 500m in the other direction. Galezow is 4.5km to the west.
Kowersk
Some farmsteads on a small grid of tracks at the end of a country lane, in an area of undulating, open arable land. There is a small wood to the east and a larger one to the north. Wola Galezowska is 4.5km to the east.
Kowersk Kol.
A string of farmsteads along a straight lane in an area of open, undulating arable land. There is a wood at the north end of the settlement, and Kowersk is 800m to the east, across the fields, whilst Wola Galezowska is 5.5km to the east.
Krastawek
Some farmsteads along a lane in an area of open, undulating arable land, with a wood 800m to the south. Wola Galezowska is 1.5km to the west.
Leśniczówka (Lesnichowka)
Some farmsteads and houses on a straight, east-west, lane, in an area of undulating, open arable land. 600m to the north is a small wood. Bychawa is 4k  to the east, and slightly to the north.
Lęczyca (Leczyca)
A couple of farmsteads in an area of open, undulating arable land, with a large wood on its western side. Bychawa is 1.5km to the east.
Majdan Gałęczowski (Majdan Galeczowski)
Some houses and a few farmsteads either side of a lane and the Kosarzewka river. There is a small gully on the western side leading up the side of the valley. The land is open and arable, but flat close to the river. There is a wood 1 km to the west, higher up the valley side. Galezow is 1 km to the southeast.
Majdan Osowski
A few scattered farmsteads and a copse in an area of open, undulating arable land, with only a track winding through it. Osowa is 2 km to the northwest.
Marynki Kol.
Some farmsteads on the north side of a lane leading east from Wola Galezowska, at a distance of 2 km. The land is open, undulating and arable, with some small woods to the west and north.
Marysin
Some scattered farmsteads and a small wood either side of a country lane, on the south side of a small valley in ana area of arable land. Bychawa is 2 km to the northwest, further down the valley.
Marysin
About 1 km to the southwest of the other Marysin, and across the fields, is this one. It consists of a few farmsteads on a short track. The land is open and arable. Galezow is 1.5km to the southwest.
Olszowiec
Some houses, other buildings and a couple of farmsteads on a country lane, with some more farmsteads along a track forming an arc to the west and north of the main settlement. The land is open, undulating and arable.
Olszowiec Kol.
Some farmsteads scattered over some open, undulating arable land.  Olszowiec is 1.5km to the south.
Olszowiec Kol. (2nd)
This second Kol Olszowiec is at a distance of 1 km to the southwest, on a country lane. It really is part of the latter, but there is some distance between the settlement areas.
Osowa
Some houses and outlying farmsteads where minor highway 836 dips into a small valley and crosses a stream. The land is open, undulating and arable.
Osowa Kol.
A few scattered farmsteads in an area of open, undulating arable land, with a small wood at the northwestern corner. It is located between Olszowiec Kol and Wolka Osowska. Olszowiec is 2.5km to the southwest.
Podzamcze
The name implies that it was beside a castle, the castle being that of Bychawa. This place is located on the west side of the Kosarzewka river, but there is a large fishpond between it an the river, with another just to the southeast. The land is relatively flat, rising towards the west, and arable. Bychawa is 2 km to the southeast.
Radków (Radkow)
Some houses on a small lane in meadows on the west side of the Kosarzewka river, plus some farmsteads on the lower valley slopes on the east side of the river. The land is open and arable. Bychawka I is 2 km to the south, further up the valley.
Skawinek
A few farmsteads in an area of open, undulating arable land. A stream flows past on the southern edge of the settlement. Bychawa is 3 km to the west.
Stara Wieś (Stara Wies)
A village where minor highway 834 joins the east-west minor highway 842, from the north. The village is located in a small valley in an area of open arable land

Stara Wieś Druga (Stara Wies Druga)
A few houses on the southwestern edge of Stara Wies itself.
Stara Wieś Pierwsza (Stara Wies Pierwsza)
Many houses and a few outlying farmsteads on minor highway 842, at the eastern end of Stara Wies.
Stara Wieś Trzecia (Stara Wies Trzecia)
Some houses and farmsteads on a lane leaving minor highway 842 to the south, at the western end of Stara Wies. The land is relatively flat, used for arable purposes, and there are two small woods, one either side of the lane at the southwestern corner of the village.
Urszulin
Houses on a straight lane with some outlying farmsteads. The land is open, undulating and arable.

Wandzin
Once a separate village across the other side of a stream on the northern side of Bychawa, but in now it is now a suburb of that small town. There are some wide gullies on the hillside on the north of the village, the west one has a small stream, while the east one is full of trees. Between the gullies the land is open and arable.
Wincentówek (Wincentowek)
Some houses, farmsteads and other buildings on the east side of the Kosarzewka river, 2 km north of Bychawa. There is a large fishpond on the other side of the river.
Wincentówek Kol. (Wincentowek Kol.)
Some farmsteads on a track leading westwards from the Kosarzewka river valley. The land is open and arable with a large wood about 800m to the west. Zdrapy is 1 km to the north and east.
Władysławów (Wladyslawow)
Some farmsteads and houses on a track in ana area of open, undulating arable land. Urszulin is 2 km to the southeast.
Wola Duża (Wola Duza)
Some houses and farmsteads and houses, mainly between a country road and a stream 300m to the south of the lane. The land is mainly flat and arable. Bychawa is 2 km to the west.
Wola Duża Kol. (Wola Duza Kol.)
Some farmsteads along a country road in an area of open, undulating arable land. Osowa is 2 km to the north.
Wola Gałęczowska (Wola Galeczowska)
A  large, long village extending for some 3 km, north to south. Partly on minor highway 834 and partly on a country lane. This the upper reach of the Kosarzewka river, and there is a pond in the middle of the village. There are some small woods on either side of the river. There is a manor house here.

Wola Gałęczowska Kol. (Wola Galezowska)
Many farmsteads around a square, 1200m to the side, formed by some country lanes and tracks. The land is open, undulating and arable. Wola Galechowska is about 1.5 km to the east.
Wola Osowska
A few farmsteads in an area of relatively flat, open arable land. There is a small wood at the western end of the settlement. Olszowiec is 4 km  to the southwest across the fields.
Zadębie (Zadebie)
Some houses on the east side of minor highway 836, on the north side of Bychawa. Bychawa's cemetery is here.

Zaraszów (Zaraszow)
Houses and a few farmsteads along a straight, north-south, country lane. There is a church at the south end of the village. The land is open and arable, and there are some small woods to the north and west of the village. Galezow is 3 km to the west.

Farmsteads along a country lane and some other, smaller, lanes leaving it to the west. The north end of this settlement joins Zaraszow by the church. The land is open and arable and there is a small wood at the western border of the settlement. Wola Galezowska is 3 km to the west.
Zdrapy
A village on a country road on the west side of the Kosarzewka river. The land is open and arable, and rises up the valley side to the west. There are meadows on either side of river. There is a copse at either end of the village.
