8. Bełżyce (Belzyce)
The Gmina of Belzyce
A relatively flat gmina, for this part of Lublin powiat. It is part
of the Lublin upland (Belzyce plateau) and is surrounded by river valleys.
the land itself is undulating, open and arable, with some woods in the
south and west. The Ciemiega river is the most significant in the gmina.
The gmina covers an area of 133 sq.km and has a population of 13900, with
half the people living in villages. A Roman Catholic parish was established
in 1452, and a Calvinist parish in 1633.

This is a large village on either side of the Ciemiega river. There
are many houses, farmsteads and other businesses here. There are several
copses in the village. The land on either side of the river at the eastern
end of the village is wooded and marshy. The land around the village is
open, undulating and arable. This village has its place in Polish history
as the "Babin commonwealth". Established in the 16th century by a Lublin
judge, and lasting until 1677, it was an association which sneered and
joked about politicians and the state. Membership was obtained by telling
a joke and drinking a special liqueur.

A scattering of a few farmsteads in the middle of a large area of undulating
open arable land, gently descending to the south. It is located halfway
between Babin and Matczyn.
A small town near the upper reaches of the Ciemiega river. The streets
are laid out in a grid pattern, mainly on the south side of the river.
The river lies in a wide valley with shallow sides. The land is open, undulating
and arable. This town was established in 1417. In the 16th century it was
a strong centre for the reformation. The parish church dates from the second
half of the 17th century, built in the Lublin Renaissance style. It lost
its town rights in 1869, but regained them in 1958, There is a cemetery
on the south side of the town, on the road to Borzechow.

A scattering of farmsteads over an area of open, reasonably flat arable
land, with some farmsteads alongside the lane which forms the settlements
northern border. Chmielnik is 2km to the west.
Quiet a large village, built on either side of a north flowing stream.
There are also quite a few outlying farmsteads. There is a small wood about
1km to the west and a copse beside the road about the same distance to
the east. Other than that the land is open, reasonably flat and arable.
Some houses and farmsteads on a short track about 1km from a surfaced
road, about 2km southeast of Wronow. The land is open, mainly flat and
arable. the land descends slowly to the northwest. There is a small wood
at the western end of the village and a large one at the eastern end. There
is a smaller Cuple 800m to the north. Today this village is a holiday resort.
A few houses at the point where the track north from the other Cuple
joins minor highway 832. Zagorze is 2km to the east. The land is open,
undulating and arable. At a distance of about 400m there are woods to the
north, west and south.
A small village with some outlying farmsteads in a large clearing in
a wood, either side of minor highway 747. The land is undulating and arable,
and there are some gullies. Nowa Gora is 2km to the southwest.
A large village strung along an almost straight country lane at the
west end of Babin, on the road to Belzyce. The land is open, arable and
gently undulating. There is a copse on the north side of the lane in the
middle of the village. Some 1-200m north of the village, and flowing parallel
to the lane, is the Ciemiega river.
A few farmsteads on either side of minor highway 834, 2km southeast
of Belzyce. The land is open, undulating and arable.
A village on a short lane just off the one between Chmielnik and Zagorze,
with some scattered farmsteads around. There is a manor house next
to a pond at the east end of the main part of the village. The land is
relatively flat, open and arable. There is a copse in the southeastern
corner of the settlement.

open arable land at the head of a valley. Just to the south of the settlement
is the start of an area of small woods. Kierz is 1km to the northeast.

An average sized village on minor highway 747, 3km west of Belzyce.
The land is undulating, open and arable, and there are several springs
in the area. 1km to the southwest is a large wood.
A few farmsteads on either side of a straight country lane in a small
area of wetland. Generally, the land about is open, undulating and arable.
Kierz is 2km to the west.
Some farmsteads strung along a lane in an area that is part wooded
and part fields. Nowa Gora adjoins the settlement on its southern side.
An average sized village alongside a small river. There
are many outlying farmsteads in each direction. the village lies in a valley
in an area of open, undulating arable land. There is a wood less than 1km
to the east.

Nowa Góra (Nowa Gora)
A few farmsteads and other buildings at the junction of a track with
minor highway 747. The area is part wooded and part fields.
Some houses and farmsteads in an area of open, undulating arable land,
just to the south of Wierzchowiska.

minot highway 832. The area is quite flat, although falling away to the
northwest. There are a few farmsteads at either end of the village.

Podole II Majdan
A few farmsteads gathered on minor highway 827, almost on top of a
hill. There is a copse here. the land is open, undulating and arable. Podole
I is 2km to the southeast.
Podole II Zapiecek
Some farmsteads on either side of a short track in an area of open,
undulating arable land. the land descends to the southwest and there is
a small area of wetlands at the bottom of the slope in that direction.
Podole I is 2km to the southeast, Podole II Majdan is just to the east.
Farmsteads strung out along a small stream in a small valley. The land
is open, undulating and arable. Babin is 2km to the north.
Farmsteads strung out along either side of 2 streams and small valleys,
at the point they converge. The land is open, undulating and arable. Babin
is 1.5km to the north.
Houses situated by the side of a small river in a narrow valley just
before it joins a larger valley. The land is open and arable, but there
are many small woods within 1km in most directions. Wierzchowiska is 2km
to the northeast, further up the valley.

Houses and a few farmsteads on either side of a country road at the
south end of an area of flat land, just where it begins to dip down into
a valley. The land is open and arable.
A well established village at the head of a long, straight narrow valley
that descends to the southwest. The land undulates quite a lot, is arable,
and there are many small woods and copses around the village. Wierzchowiska
Gorna is 1km to the east.

Farmsteads strung out along either side of minor highway 747, 3km northeast
of Podole I. The lans is open, undulating and arable. There is a large
wood to the north and northeast, and another wood some 800m to the southeast.
Houses along the side of a small stream, with a few outlying farmsteads,
in a slightly narrow valley. The land is undulating and arable. There is
a wood at the eastern end of the village.

5km to the northwest along a straight country road.
This is now a suburb on the western side of Belzyce, but was once about
1km away from that town. There is a stream on the north side of the 'village'
and beyond it the built up area of Zastawie. It is quite a low lying place,
and to the south the land is undulating, open and arable.

A few farmsteads in a large area of open, undulating arable land, some
500m from the nearest surfaced road. It is about halfway between Belzyce
and Wierzchowiska, slightly to the west.
Some houses and a lot of farmsteads along a straight, east-west, section
of minor highway 832. The land is relatively flat, there is a series of
woods to the south and another one to the north, all at a distance of about
Zagórze Kol. I, II, III (Zagorze Kol. I, II, III)
Some farmsteads along a network of lanes in an area of open, undulating
arable land. These settlements are in a line, south to north, and lie about
1-2km north of Zagorze itself.

a southeast flowing stream near its source at the top of a narrow valley.
The village is surrounded by small woods, all at a distance of about 300m.
