| The Antonio López was one of several ships owned by the Compañia Trasatlántica Española that brought immigrants from Spain to Puerto Rico and Cuba in the mid 19th century. The ships sailed out of the ports of Barcelona or Cadiz, stopped in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands) and then Puerto Rico and Cuba. Some ships also went on to Key West, FL., New Orleans, LA, and on to Venzuela before returning to Spain. In late June of 1898, the Antonio Lopez carrying war supplies for the Spanish garrison in San Juan, PR was attacked and run aground by the USS Yosemite while attempting to run the American blockade. The supplies were saved but the Antonio López sank beneath the waves a few days later. |
