| The Guardias de la Pátria were local militia units organized in the various towns in Puerto Rico during World War I to defend the Island while the Regular Army's Provisional Puerto Rican Infantry Regiment was posted to Panama to protect the Canal against German saboteurs. In this 1918 photo the Guardias de la Pátria stand ready for inspection in front of their Headquarters located just outside the town. Miguel Hernández Gerena, father of PRHGS President Miguel Hernández Torres, was a member of the Lares contingent of the Guardias. |
