Surnames: Boreliz, Borrero, Cruz, Perez

I hope to trace what I can on my family.   I am seeking information on Pascual (Pasqual) Boreliz (my g-father) who, with other family members left Puerto Rico in the early 1900's and came to the U.S. They sailed on the "Del Rio" and landed in Alabama, USA, in
1901.  From there they went overland by train to California and by boat to Kauai, Hawaii. Pasqual was a foreman at a sugar cane plantation.  His father is Adelino Boreliz, his wife was Juanita Perez.  On my grandmother's side (Mary Borrero) who was born in Kauai, I am looking for information on her parents, from Puerto Rico, - Antonio Borrero and Juanita Perez.  Supposedly some of the family lived in or around San Juan. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Surname: Vazquez

First, I would like to compliment you on the website - it's very nice.

I have just now undertaken the task of learning more about my ancestors who hail from Puerto Rico.  I am pleasantly surprised by the information available however, I have a question:  I am currently researching the name Vazquez from Ponce and although there is a genealogist who is researching this name, Jose Davis, I am unclear as to how to get in touch with him.  Any suggestions (i.e., e-mail, snail-mail address, etc.)?

Michael Whittaker

Michael, the names with no e-mail links attached to them have no e-mail addresses.
The Puerto Rican Hispanic Genealogical Society, graciously provide La Genealogia de Puerto Rico with a list of the surnames their members are investigating.  If La Genealogia de Puerto Rico has the regular mailing address of Jose Davis, you will be provide with it via an e-mail message.

Surname: Arcano, Armandi, de Rivera, Román, Zanchi, Zenqui

I am researching the ROMAN family of Yauco, Puerto Rico, and I came across a
MELVIN MORRIS, a genealogy researcher investigating the same surname (Roman) as I am.   His ID # is 217.   How can I get in contact with him?

I have ten generations of ROMAN starting from 1708, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.   I have traced my family to a sergeant Miguel Román, married to Sebastiana de Rivera.   Miguel was in the Milicia Urbana of Arecibo, ca. 1702.   He had nine children.   His descendants migrated in 1770 to Yauco > Guayanilla > Hawaii >New York.   I have also traced other ancestors to Genoa, Italy (Santiago ZANCHI, son of Pietro and Maria Bianca ARMANDI) > Naguabo, PR, married to Josefa ARCANO from Toa Alta in 1799.   Their daughter María ZANCHI married my g-g-grandfather Cayetano Román in 1819, in Yauco. (ZANCHI, pron. Zan-key in Italian, was changed to ZENQUI, its present spelling in P.R.)

Juan D. Román

Juan, do you have any information on the surname of Franqui, believe to also originate from Genoa, Italy?  The original spelling of the surname Franqui may have been Franchi.

Apellidos: Cruz, Damiani, Emmanuelli, Ginorio, Leclerc,Morales, Perez, Zayas

Don Carmelo Emmanuelli Morales y Doña Pura Cruz Ginorio.
Puerto Rico.  En estos momentos estoy en espera de los resultados de una investigación hecha por un genealogísta profesional.  Estos datos los proveeré gustosamente para que aquellos otros parientes en diáspora puedan beneficiarse de esta información.  Le doy gracias por el espacio y por su tiempo al leer estas dilatadas líneas y quedo de usted muy respetuosamente;

Surnames: Cabrera, Diaz, Silva, Virella

I am Sigfredo Antonio Cabrera.  I live in California.  I am trying to construct a family tree with very little information.  Perhaps you can help and get me started in the right direction.  My deceased father is Rafael Cabrera-Silva. He was from Corozal, Puerto Rico, born on November 11, 1932. He died June 1968.   My father's parents were Fermina Silva and Pedro Cabrera.  My father married my mother Maria Elena Diaz sometime between 1954 and 1957 (probably 1955).  My mother's parents' surnames are Diaz (her father) and Virella (her mother); I don't know their first names.  Maria was born also in Corozal, Puerto Rico on September 16, 1929.  I am Maria and Rafael's son.  I also have a brother,
Jose Rafael Cabrera.  We were born in Bronx, New York.  Are any of your "Cabrera" researchers familiar with this lineage of Cabrera?  I am searching for names of aunts,
uncles, cousins, etc.  Please help.

Surname: Ithier

I am looking for any information on the Ithier clan, originally from France.  According to my research, this family migrated to Puerto Rico probably in the late 1700s to the early 1800s.  I have been able to identify my great great grandfather Pedro Ithier, who according to an 1841 census report, arrived to the area of Montoso, Mayaguez during the late 1830s and eventually coupled with Heriberta Ithier, who reportedly was from Curacao.  Though the name is unique in Puerto Rico, it has in fact become very well known, and can boast of having historically prominent figures amongst their ranks, both in Puerto Rico and in France, dating back to the crusades. If there's anyone interested in helping me with the research, which I have been told will entailed linking what could be thousands of Borinqueños into this family tree.

Surname: Rivera

My father's name is Miguel Angel Rivera. I have very few facts on him. I do know he was from Puerto Rico, he has a sister whose name is Providencia, my mother gave only two pictures of  him, he was in the army his uniform has the rankings of a master sargent, the pictures were taken in Fort Dix, New Jersey, and in Center Nebraska at my grandfathers home in 1961. I have contacted many branches of the army, but without his social security number, they can't help me. my name is Lila Ellen (James) Mechaley, I was born 8-11-1961, my mother's name was Mary Ellen James, I have been searching for years,  I pray you can help me, or direct me to someone who can, any kind of info would be greatly appriciated. I know live in Battle Creek, Nebraska

Lila Ellen (James) Mechaley

If you are seeking information about your dad  who served in the U.S. Military you should contact the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Blvd. St Louis, MO 63132. Include as much info as you know about him.   I understand you have a foto of him in uniform. Does it show his rank, how many stripes, Army Division or other identifying unit ensignia? Does he have decorations-- e.g. combat infantry, crossed rifles, crossed cannons (artillery) or other medal that would indicate the branch of the army he served in.  All of this might help the FRC people help you locate your dad.

Go to your nearest VFW or Army facility and ask their public affairs officer or someone there  to help you  identfy the rank, medals,  insignia etc., on his uniform as you need to give the  folks in St. Louis as much info as possible. You should also first ask St. Louis to send you the form they use , I m' not sure but believe it is Form 180.

If he served in the Vietnam War you might want to contact the Office of  the State Adjutant General of  New York, New Jersey  or Puerto Rico as his service in Ft.  Dix may indicate residency in one of those states or territory. Also suggest you get a copy of a book entitled, "How To Locate Anyone Who has served in the Military".   I believe the author's name is Johnson. If you think he may have died in Vietnam you might also want to contact the
US Army Web page -- http: www/army mil/   I believe they have a listing of all those who perished in that conflict.

Good Hunting!
