Knox Presbyterian Cemetery
The Knox Presbyterian/United Cemetery is located about 1/2 mile west of the Village of St-Louis de Gonzague in Southwestern Quebec Province in Canada. The cemetery is located on the bank of the St-Louis River about 1000ft north of Rte 236. See the Property Map.
The St-Louis Presbyterian congregation has a long history starting in the 1830s with a visiting minister from Beauharnois conducting services in private homes. The first church was built in 1842 after the Seigneurie of Beauharnois donated half a farm lot as a "Glebe" (land used for the support of a church) to the congregation. In the following decade, the schisms that had split the Church of Scotland came to the valley and half the members joined the new "Free Kirk" who also built a church. In 1875, the Established Church of Scotland and the Free Kirk united to form the Presbyterian Church of Canada. In 1925 the St-Louis congregation voted to join the new United Church of Canada. Due to declining membership, the church was closed in 1945 and the remaining members joined the Howick United Church. The church was demolished in 1963.

Old St-Louis Presbyterian CemeteryThe old cemetery was located near the original log church built in 1842. Tragically some decades ago, a neighbor stole most of the old stones to use as a foundation on a pig barn he was building (the building on the right in the picture above). When this was discovered, it was too late to recover the stones and the committee chose not to take legal action against him. That neighbor is long gone and the present owner has indicated that when the barn is demolished, the stones could be returned. However it is doubtful that they could be recovered in a readable state.
Memorial StoneThere are only 5 surviving stones (lot map) in the old cemetery bearing 13 names of burials. A memorial stone was erected in the center of the lot in 1990 in memory of the Old Scottish Settlers buried there. A generous bequest by the last member of one of the original families has provided the funds for the cemetery maintenance today.
New St-Louis Presbyterian CemeteryThe new cemetery is located at the back of the property next to the St-Louis River. It is not known when it was started but it is still being used today for new burials. It is quite small with 48 monuments in 12 rows (lot map) having a total of 140 names of burials inscribed.
In October 2004, a complete set of photographs was taken of the remaining monuments in this cemetery. A complete documentation is being prepared from the photos and available church records but this will take some time to finish. When finished it will be available as a hardcopy book and a CDRom with all the pictures as well as a website showing the inscriptions (but not the photos).
Meanwhile this list showing all the names that appear on the stones has been extracted from the database. It lists the names alphabetically and the ID number for the stone bearing each name. Married women are listed with both their maiden name (where available) and their married name. Names of persons who were buried but do not have a monument inscription bearing their name are not included.
If you have an interest in a particular name, contact the webmaster for the particular information. A photo of a particular stone can be provided as an e-mail attachment but please limit your request to 1 or 2 stones.
The old and new lot maps will help locate the monuments if you wish to view them in person. Note: the gates are usually locked to cars and it is a long walk back to the new section.
