The 1831 Rouville County Census

The official enumeration date for the 1831 census was between June 1st and October 1st, 1831. Ages were supposed to be recorded according to that date. The enumerator's statement on page twenty of the census was signed on October 31st, 1831, implying that the census was taken during the preceding couple of months. The census only includes the names of the head of household and the age groups of the individuals in the family. There are three groups of individuals. Two columns are for those under the age of fourteen. These columns are not gender specific. Next, there are ten columns for males and, lastly, five columns for females. It is possible to derive significantly more information about the family with a little arithmetic. The first column of females enumerates those under the age of fourteen. As these are also enumerated in the two columns of the non-gender specific children, it is possible to subtract one from the other and thus derive the number of males under the age of fourteen. Depending on the numbers and distribution of individuals in the columns it is often possible to determine the numbers of males and females in both the under six and the six but under fourteen groups. I have included four additional columns in this transcription that show these "derived" values.

In some cases it is clear that enumeration errors occur. It would be inappropriately speculative to discuss the many causes for such errors. It is also likely that I have introduced transcription errors. Be aware that both enumeration and transcription errors do exist.

If you see something that does not agree what is written on the original image, please bring it to the attention of . Some entries are incorrect in the original census. I will not make changes to "correct" such errors in the original, no matter how well documented the evidence is.
