Ward
Settlement Cemetery
Stanhope, Stanstead County, Quebec
Location: From Coaticook follow route 147 South toward the US border. Do not turn into Dixville. Before you get to the Stanhope turn, watch for a road on the left called Du Pont. Turn here and the cemetery is about one half a kilometer on the left. It really cannot be seen from the road unless you have a sharp eye and know where to look. It is in the woods but only a dozen or so steps from the road. If you want to view the cemetery, it is best to contact Peter Bellows who owns the land and is very obliging.
Notes: This quaint cemetery with its one tombstone and metal fence was constructed when the William Ward family who came from England built a home here in the 1800's. He was a physician and the home he built known as Hawksworth was quite a building for its time. There was also a church here at one time and the foundation can still be seen in among the trees.
I visited this burial ground in October 2009 accompanied by Peter Bellows and Ashton Hallam
