Christ Church Cemetery -Franklin, QC |
Email:
Ken Steffenson |
This
cemetery list was compiled in September of 2005 by Carolyn Canary and Mary Ellen
Konopka, both descendents of John Boyd of Boyd Settlement , who came to Huntingdon
in 1832 with his young family and his brother, William, from County Down, Ireland.
In May 2007, the cemetery was photographed by Ken Steffenson and the cemetery list
subsequently updated.
The Christ Church Anglican Cemetery, also known as Ames Cemetery, is located on
Rte. 202 (formerly Rte. 52) just west of Franklin Center, Que. It is on or adjacent
to property originally owned by Fisher Ames, a local merchant of the time. His store
was in front of the cemetery. There is a passage from the road (on the north side)
marked only by a wooden sign (in 2005) and is across from the old church. The church
was built in 1842 but is no longer an active parish. It is part of the Anglican
Dioceses of Montreal. This cemetery is referred to in some records as “English Cemetery”
also.
The
cemetery is easy to miss as it is situated rather far back from the road and access
is by a very narrow “cow path” which opens into a field still being used today.
In Sept. 2005, the sign had fallen over. It is surrounded by a beautiful and substantial
stone fence and has several large trees growing amongst the headstones.
The information that was gathered in 2005 was done with as much accuracy as possible,
owing to the condition of some of the stones. Some were broken, parts missing or
sunken, badly damaged by natural causes or whatever lack of attention allows. Some
stones are in very good condition. We tried to record the information as it was
discernable on each existing stone, including name, age, relationships, and nativity
where possible. When in doubt, we took our best guess but indicated so with “?’
or “…” to indicate the fact that the information may be incorrect or just unreadable.
You may notice that there are a few examples of spelling variety, sometimes on the
same stone…we recorded it that way as we read it.
The
ultimate result is a list as complete as possible at this time. We compared our
collected information to that of Gerry Rogers, done in 1978, and have indicated
with the symbol "§" names which appear on both the Rogers’
list and ours. Also included at the end, are some names we did not find but were
on the Rogers’ list. Also here are inscriptions that were confusing for us. Updated
and corrections are indicated in italics.
We hope that this effort will help researchers looking for family in the Franklin/Rockburn
area of Huntingdon County, Que.
Mary Ellen Konopka
& Carolyn Canary
