New! Huntingdon Protestant Cemetery Inscription and Burial List

The Huntingdon Protestant Cemetery is situated near the edge of the village on Francois Cleyn Street and was establish in the early 1880's. According to the records, the first cemetery plot was actually sold in 1884.
It should be noted that when the Huntingdon Protestant Cemetery was established, the Huntingdon Presbyterian Cemetery -- located behind what is now Grove Hall on Chateauguay Street -- was abandoned. During the time of abandonment, families were invited to move head stones and skeletal remains to the new cemetery.  The burials in Huntingdon Presbyterian Cemetery likely dated from at least the early 1830's to the mid-1880's. And, while most families complied with the request to re-inter family members at the new location, some headstones and burials were in fact left behind to be lost and forgotten. In a good many cases, it is probable that only the head stones were moved.
This transcription comprises the Records of Ownership and Burials for Huntingdon Protestant Cemetery. It includes information current to the end of May 2003. The information comes from almost 900 index cards that provide detail about past and present owners for the lots in the cemetery. The cards also provide some detail about nearly 4000 burials. Genealogist may be disappointed by the lack of vital statistics related to the individuals who were buried. Meanwhile, we hope the information will be useful to narrow the search for the burial location of elusive family members and to assist in locating family graves during a visit to the cemetery. Further work is in process to collect and transcribe additional information from the actual monuments in the cemetery and other sources.
Below is an example of one of the cards that was transcribed. The front includes details of the land transaction and the reverse includes some details about the interments that have taken place. From the image of the card, you will note that a full lot originally contained space for 12 graves.  In some cases, lots were subdivided or graves "re-used". For the purpose of the transcription, a grave number of "0" is a good indication that burial was related to a cremation.

This transcription was kindly provided by Ed Stark and myself, Ken Steffenson. We would like to thank the Huntingdon Cemetery Committee for kindly making the records available to us and we wish to give Burt Lang many thanks for his work in copying the records and preparing a digital map of the cemetery.  The transcription of the records has been organized here into a list of Lot Owners and the Lot Locations and a List of Burials recorded on the reverse of the cards.
