Smellie Family Cemetery

This is a small family cemetery located on the property that once belonged to John Smellie. Near Clyde's Corner, the cemetery is situated in Godmanchester Township, a few hundred yards to the northeast of where a railroad intersects Smellie Road between Route 138 and Ridge Road. Finding the cemetery is difficult because it is set on private property in the middle of an expanse of ash, maple, cedar, hawthorn, and other shrubs. The old stone house built by the Smellie Family is a few hundred yards from the cemetery toward Ridge Road. The house and farm no longer belong to the Smellie Family. Smellie, pronounced "Smiley:, can be found in various records spelled as "Smillie", "Smiley", and "Smilley".

The cemetery is approximately 30 feet by 30 feet and surrounded by a stone fence. As the photographs indicate, some sections of the stone fence have fallen down and the grave markers are now almost impossible to read. In 1978, Gerry Rogers listed the following grave makers in the cemetery:

John Smellie
Note: Born 1791 and died February 14, 1873. A native of New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Husband of Jane Miller. He was the original settler on the property.

John Smellie
Note: Born 1848 and died 1873. A grandson of John Smellie (1791-1873) and son of James Smellie & Ann Vindacomb.

William Tannahill
Note: Born 1828 and died 1862. A son of Matthew Tannahill & Elizabeth Chalmers. William Tannahill was not a descendant of John Smellie (1791-1873). The Tannahill Family lived near the Smellie Family and the two families intermarried in later generations. William died in a lumbering accident in New York State.

______ Warden:
Note: Died October 5, 1874 at four weeks old. A daughter of Robert Warden & Janet Adams Harvey. Robert Warden was a son of James Warden (1811-1879) & Margaret Smellie (1811-1871). Margaret Smellie was a sister of John Smellie (1791-1873).
