Located on the north side of New Erin Road just east of Rankin Side Road in Godmanchester Township, the Sparrow Douglass Cemetery is the burial ground for some of the first Irish settlers in this district. The cemetery was partially destroyed when New Erin Road was widened. The remaining grave markers were preserved by Adrian Sparrow in 1990.

spar2.jpgThis section of Godmanchester at one point was called "New Ireland" because of its many Irish settlers, but the name was later changed to "New Erin".  Both the Sparrow and Douglass families have farmed in the area for generations. The Douglass Family arrived from County Derry, Ireland, in 1819 and the Sparrow Family from County Derry, Ireland, in the spring of 1825.
