04-11-1872 William Barrett, surveyor, died at Covey Hill, Aged 71 years. Deceased was a native of Southampton, England, and served for a time as midshipmen in the Royal Navy. On his marriage he emigrated to this country and settled here nearly 40 years ago. Being an educated man and of considerable natural ability, he did much of the public business of his locality for long-term of years. And, we believe was the first Mayor of Havelock. In his professional capacity as a land surveyor, he was widely known.
