04-22-1902 George Henry Monk, M.D., died at Rockburn PQ, age 52 years.

Of interest Rockburn PQ, Mr. editor, kindly allow me space to correct the missstatement of facts, regarding the death of the late Dr. Monk, which was published in your last issue. If correctly reported, the verdict of the jury was not in keeping with the facts of the case. There was no overdose (as that term is understood by the public) of chloral, nor was it taken inadvertently. A does of 20 grams of chloral, (the amount taken was probably near 15) repeated in 2 hours, and again after an interval of three hours, is, to the average adult patient, but a moderate dose, and to such is daily administered with perfect safety. That it was taken carelessly or heedlessly (inadvertently) is too absurd. At the time of the occurrence he was as keenly active mentally as ever he was, though suffering physically, and took what he considered but a moderate dose, and not more than he had often taken previously with but the happiest effects. Death was due not to an overdose, or large dose, but to the fact that his physical condition, owing to previous illnesses, and to an organic heart affection, could not withstand the depressing effect of the drug, though taken in what would be considered a moderate dose. Having reached the bedside shortly after his death, and having an intimate knowledge of his physical condition, I had no hesitation, on hearing the facts of the case, in affirming that death was due to causes as stated above. Signed William Oliver, M.D.
