08-11-1918 William Whitcomb McClintock, and also James McClintock, died at Vimy Ridge, in France. In many households sorrow broods over the death of a son on the battle line, but the Hoechst to be reft of two sons by the cruel hand of war is that of James McClintock, Ormstown PQ. On Vimy Ridge, which was so deadly to the Canadian contingent, fought April 24, 1817, their son James who had risen to be an officer, was killed while leading his men. In the advance made by the British last month, their younger son, William, fell on the 11 of August. The following letter tells of the manner of his death. 50th battalion, France, August 15, 1918. Mr. McClintock, Dear Sir, I have the painful duty of telling you how your son lost his life, in action on Sunday August the eleventh 1918 (883697 McClintock W.). He was hit in the head while manning his Lewis Gun and died instantly. He was well liked by everyone in his company, and will most certainly be missed by all, more especially by me, his platoon commander, because for some time passed he has been handling a Lewis gun section for me and was due for a stripe. He was very energetic and faithful to the last, and I join you in your sorrow at his loss. Yours sincerely, Lt. Charles M. Shoebotham. He enlisted in the fall of 1916 and has been at the front in France for over a year. He was 32 years of age and like his brother, was a fine specimen of manhood. No human words can console the afflicted family. Yet there is some satisfaction and they are being assured he was faithful to the last.
