Robert Orr, for many years one of Bismarck's best-known and best loved citizens, and a high any air in the development of Bismarck as a distribution center for a large area, was taken suddenly by death on Jan. 16, 1923, while attending a business meeting of the Bismarck building and loan association in the offices of the Provident life insurance company. Mr. Orr who had been president of the associative since 1917, and other stockholders had just finished their business meeting and read of a successful past year for the association when he turned and slipped from his chair. Death due to heart failure came so suddenly that he passed away without pain. Although he had absented himself from his business affairs for a considerable period some time ago and knew of his serious condition, Mr. Orr had resumed his work and had never betrayed any anxiety to his friends and maintained his usual cheerful and sunny disposition. Born September 30th 1858, in Riverfield PQ, Mr. Orr, when a young man embarked to make his own way in the United States. Of Scotch ancestry, he put his indefatigable energy and ability into his work and achieved business success during his lifetime. He first went to Mapleton Minnesota, entering a general merchandising store. There he was wed to Elizabeth Dobie in 1885. The ability of Mr. Orr as a salesman attracted others and later he became associated with the Patterson merchantile Co. of Mankato as a district salesman, living for many years in Fairmont Minnesota. He came to Bismarck in 1902, with the Bismarck Company, then a small concern, and applied the same energetic principles which had resulted in his successful rise from the small store in Minnesota. At the time of his death he was a director of the Bismarck Roche Co. which has grown to be one of the big concerns of its kind in ND and was in charge of Mandan and Bismarck sales. Mr. Orr is survived by his widow, one son Merton, who is manager of the Gamble Robinson Co. in Jamestown MS, Agnes who is in New Haven CT, engaged in publicity work and to brothers and two sisters. One brother lives in Riverfield PQ, the Orr home, another in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, one sister resides in Howick PQ, and one in Montreal PQ. The funeral service was largely attended at the first Presbyterian Church, by Rev. H. C. Postlethwaite, pastor, officiating paid a high tribute to the steadfast character of the deceased.
