(Facts of interest) Athelstan Creamery has 74 years history behind it. 75 years ago this coming spring, a butter factory and Creamery was built at Athelstan Québec. The late Dan Boyce of Athelstan, and John Dineen, of Powerscourt decided the district needed a butter factory and after making a study of how they were operated across the border, work was commenced on the Athelstan Creamery. Working in the Athelstan Creamery during the first year of its operations was Ed Boyce, of Athelstan, son of the late Dan Boyce. He recalls the early days of the Creamery. During the first year of operation of the Creamery a total of 150 pounds of butter was made. During the third year of its existence about 300 pounds of butter was made. This amount of butter was not anywhere near the amount that was necessary to meet the demand, especially for the market across the border. This Athelstan Creamery was the first factory of any kind built in the district. It was later followed by cheese factories throughout the county. The small amount of butter made during the early years of the Creamery's existence was due to the fact that there just wasn't sufficient amount of milk brought into the Creamery. There were comparatively few cows in the district back about 1864. At that time the average farmer had about three or four cows. This number was gradually increased. Most of the butter that was made at the Athelstan Creamery went across the border. It was made up in small tubs and the excellence of the butter in the small tubs was well known to many residents across the lines. There was no duty on the butter at that time and there was no interference on the part of Customs officials in taking the butter across lines. One horse was the power used to operate the barrel churn at the Creamery. In the early days this horse was not at all overworked since there was not nearly sufficient milk brought in. With the passing of time, however, and the increase in the number of cows owned by the district farmers, the milk coming into the Creamery steadily increased. The milk was placed in pan's ten feet long and four feet wide after it was brought into the Creamery. To keep the milk cool, there was kept running under these pans a steady stream of cold water. Next spring the Athelstan Creamery will mark the 75th anniversary of it's founding. This Creamery is believed to be not only the first one in the district, but the first one in this country.

Huntingdon Gleaner, November 02, 1938. (Front page).

The tragedy that occurred in Montreal on Friday evening where three sisters and a daughter-in-law were drowned in the Lachine canal is already known to many of our readers. The tragedy was so colossal and sad, it makes it extremely difficult for one so closely connected to write the report. On Friday morning, Mr. John Morris Hunter, of Huntingdon drove to Montreal and was accompanied to his wife, his mother, Mrs. Greta M. Hunter, and two of his mother's sisters, Mrs. Louise Kelly, and Mrs. H. G. Gessner. Mr. Hunter and his mother had business to transact in the city and as the day was ideal they left Huntingdon towards the noon hour. They had a delightful day in the city, completed what business they wished to transact and saw a great number of old friends from Huntingdon. After having had their Tea, they left for home. During the day they met Mrs. Enid Stewart, sister of Mrs. J. Morris Hunter, and suggested that she accompanied them home for the weekend. Mrs. Stewart was to meet the party at a certain hour and if she where there at the allotted time it was understood she would come home, otherwise would remain in Montreal. The party waited for her some little time before leaving and it was only a few moments after they left that Enid arrived at the designated spot. Mr. Hunter was asked by the family to drive home the shortest and quickest way. Mr. Hunter was driving, heading for the Lachine canal road, and it was agreed that after he reached this road his wife would drive the rest of the way home. As the car approach the canal a tricky curve in the road must be made to round what was once used as a ship birth in the canal near Pitt Street, and the Crane Limited plant on Saint Patrick Street. The Hunter car crossed the tracks but failed to make the curve in the Street, and crossed the few feet of ground that separated the street from the birthing place of a ship on the canal bank. At the moment of the accident the steamer was sailing down the canal and it is thought Mr. Hunter's attention might have been attracted to the ship, or else he was heading for the lites, that were quite prominent on a peer in the distance which would incline one, to feel he was on a straight stretch of road. Albert Dumouchel, a night watchman, and formerly of Valleyfield, was seated on a lumber pile watching the steamer pass, when the Hunter car passed him. He was the one and only eyewitness of this tragedy. At the coroners inquest on Saturday, Mr. Dumouchel testified as follows. I was approximately 2 hundred feet from the point of accident watching a boat sailed by, and I saw the car passed me. The car was not driving fast, but it did not take the curve in the Street. There was no signal post at the point of accident and the Street was not well lighted at the time. When I saw what happened I grabbed a plank and ran to the scene of the accident. The car was sort of floating on top of the water and the car occupants were screaming. The car plunged to the bed of the canal headfirst, and I saw the signal taillight disappear when I got to the bank of the canal opposite the point of the accident. I then saw Mr. Hunter swimming to the side of the canal bank. I stretched myself out on the ground and reached out for his hand and grabbed him and managed to pull him out of the water, I did not see the other occupants of the car, he told me he came from Huntingdon and that his wife and mother were in the car and two aunts, and he endeavored to jump into the water, hoping to save the others. Another car came along at this moment and I called to them for assistance. A man hurried to me and between us we managed to hold Mr. Hunter from jumping into the water, believing he also might lose his wife. The police were called and they then took charge of affairs. They escorted Mr. Hunter to the police station and immediately summoned the ambulance from the Western division of the Montreal General Hospital to which Mr. Hunter was taken. Mr. Hunter suffered severe shock. Dr. Donald McCrimmon, a very close friend of Mr. Hunter, reports his body injuries as slight, but the nervous shock tremendous. The car plunged into 30 feet of water. It canted on the driver's-side and the pressure of water made it impossible to open the doors. It was through the window of the front seat that Mr. Hunter gained accident. The accident occurred at 7.35, as it was at that hour the watches indicated through being stopped. Preparations for the recovery of the bodies and the raising of the car took some time because arrangements had to be made with Richard Pearson's, superintendent of the Lachine canal department. About three-quarters of an hour after the drowning occurred, driver Eugene Montpetit and his assistant W. Bateman, arrived with their apparatus, and within a few minutes where in the water. While the spot where the machine was seen to plunge into the water was marked by Dumouchel, driver Montpetit had difficulty in finding the car. The first time he went down, he returned to the surface after 15 minutes below, and announced that he had not located the vehicle yet. He returned a second time and after making a wide survey of the bottom of the canal over a radius of about 60 feet he returned to his attendance and announce that he had found the car about 30 feet from the canal wall facing in the opposite direction from which it was traveling, and the headlights of the machine were still on. After a short respite the driver returned to the bottom and this time he managed to attach a large cable to the bumper of the machine, and around 11.45 o'clock, a large salvaging truck of the city Police Department began hauling the machine towards the surface. The salvagers met some difficulty, but finally got the car out. Inspector Brodeur and Lieut. Coulombe open the doors and found two of the women in the rear seat, their arms locked around each other. A third was beside them. Mrs. Hunter was on the floor below the front seat. The bodies were taken to the morgue, the car to the police garage. Dr. Donald McCrimmon had considerable difficulty locating the bereaved husband, Mr. H. G. Gessner and Adam L. Sellar, brother-in-law of the three sisters. Mr. Gessner was informed before the party left Huntington that they would be home early in the evening. He was walking the streets with the premeditated thought that an accident must have occurred, else they would be home. Mr. and Mrs. Adam Sellar and Mr. R. Watson Sellar were in a Malone Theatre when Dr. McCrimmon phoned the sad news. On Saturday afternoon Messrs DL Kelly, assisted by B. L. McGarrigle and J. A.Larin, district undertakers took charge. The remains of Mrs. Gessner being shipped to New York City on Saturday night, while the other three were transported to Huntington. The remains of Mrs. J. Morris Hunter were taken to her home on Fairview Street Huntingdon, while those of Mrs. Greta M. Hunter and Mrs. Louise Kelly to their homes on Henderson Street. Mr. J. Morris Hunter was escorted home from the Western division Montreal Hospital, on Sunday night by his uncle, Mr. F. H. Hunter, who was with him on Saturday and Sunday, in addition to the day and night nurses. On Monday evening he returned to the hospital, where he will be carefully and tenderly cared for by nurses M. M. Johnston, formerly of the Huntingdon Academy teaching staff. The most sincere sympathy of the entire countryside pours out to Mr. Morris Hunter and Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart, mother of the late Mrs. Morris Hunter, the brother Cameron and sisters Enid and Audrey, and to the sisters of the late Mrs. Hunter, the late Mrs. Kelly and the late Mrs. Gessner, who are Mrs. Adam L. Sellar of Huntingdon, Mrs. Albert E. Stringer of Chatham Ontario, and Mrs. E. J. Wadley, 88 Bodley Road, New Malden, England.
