12-29-1939 Jesse Galbraith Edwards, daughter of the late James Keith Edwards and Jane Galbreath, died at Toronto ON, she went with her parents to Washington D.C., where she lived until her marriage with Robert Chidley Manning on June 29, 1892. She is survived by her husband, Robert Chidney Manning, two daughters, Miss Jane Aylmer Manning, of Franklin, and Mrs. Ralph Gordon McLaren, of Kenmore New York, one son, James Frederick Manning, one brother, Alexander J. Edwards, of Washington D.C., a nephew, Keith Edwards, and a niece, Mrs. Earl Wilson, both of New Mexico, and two grandsons, Robert and Gordon McLaren, of Kenmore New York. 01-24-1940 Oliver Demers, died at Valleyfield Hospital, age 91 years 03 months. He was married twice, to Miss Delphine Patenaude who was his first wife, and Mrs. Martine Lecuyer, his second wife, who predeceased him six years ago. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, of the first family and four daughters, of the second family. Funeral was held in the Catholic Church, conducted by father Patenaude. Burial did not take place at once, owing to the delay of his son, Father Demers of Stone Church, Saskatchewan, who came by plane and did not arrive until Sunday. A short service was held on Monday morning and conducted by father Demers. Interred in the Howick Cemetery.

01-25-1940 James Kearney, died at Valleyfield Québec, age 79 years, a native of Ormstown Québec.

01-25-1940 Duncan McLachlan, of 4860 Queen Mary Road, Montreal, husband of the late Mary Irving, died at the Montreal General Hospital, age 74 years. He was a native of Glasgow Scotland, coming to Canada as a boy and became interested in farming, he was the owner of Silver King, one of the greatest prize-winning Ayrshire bulls in Canada. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Irving in 1931, Mr. McLachlan is survived by four sons, Donald, George, Ernest and Thomas, and one daughter, Miss Mary Ellen McLachlan, all of Montreal.

01-25-1940 Mabel Maude Trickery, (Hinton), wife of William McMeekin, died at her late residents, in Montreal.

01-29-1940 William Roy of Ormstown Québec, beloved husband of Caroline Ruth McGill, died at the Montreal Neurological Institute, age 68 years. He was united in marriage with Caroline Ruth McGill in February, 1903,along with a family of five daughters survive him. Namely, Ruth, Ina, and Wilma of Montreal, Mrs. William Wood of Athelstan Québec, and Mrs. James Wilson of Kenogami, Québec, one brother, John Roy Ormstown, and one sister, Mrs. James McNeil of Hamilton Ont, two grandchildren, Eula and Royce Wood of Athelstan. Funeral service was held from his residence Wednesday afternoon, January 31st, to the Presbyterian Church. Service conducted by the Rev. E. J. White, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Payne and Rev. C. L. Taylor. Interred in the Union Cemetery, the Oddfellows conducting a short graveside service.

(Not dated) Cyril Tessier, died at Cornwall Ontario, visiting his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Elie Gougeon, only a few weeks after his wife passed away early in the summer. At the age of 72. he was born in Valleyfield and passed his 73rd birthday almost three months ago. He was a son of Cyril Tessier and his wife, Marie Charbonneau. Left to mourn, one son and a daughter, Eugene Tessier of Valleyfield, and Mrs. Elie Gougeon of Cornwall. Funeral was held in Valleyfield Québec, burial beside his wife.

02-01-1940 Mrs. Ira B. McKinney,, (Sarah Ann Brooks), beloved wife of the late Ira B McKenny , of Ellenburg NY, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Edwards of Covey Hill Québec, age 57 years,. She was second daughter of the late Robert Brooks and his wife, Margaret Ferns of Franklin Township, she was married in 1917. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. W. Jackson and Mrs. C. B. Edwards, of Kobe Hill, and Mrs. James Simpson of Glendale CA, three brothers, Martin of Franklin, Rufus of Livelong Saskatchewan, and Charles of Sudbury ON, and a step daughter, Miss Edna McKinney of Model NY. Funeral was held in the Union Church, service conducted by the Rev. Mr. Bellnin, interred in the Ames Cemetery, Franklin Québec.

Funeral was held at St. Paul's United Church in Ormstown Québec. Mr. McWhinnie was united in marriage to Margaret Law, widow of the late Joseph Anderson, who predeceased him 16 years ago. He leaves to mourn a loving and devoted father, a son and daughter, Roy of Huntingdon, and Lyda, Mrs. Warren Winter of Outremont, one son, Lorne, having died 24 years ago, two stepsons, Wilbur and Ward Anderson of Montreal, one brother, John who predeceased him, James of Allen's Corners, a sister, Mrs. Z. 02-05-1940 Gertrude Planche, wife of Rev. Allen S. Reid, D.D., of 152 Hillcrest Avenue, died at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Montreal Québec, age 60 years. Burial in the Huntingdon Protestant Cemetery. She was born in Megantic County, and grew up in Danville Québec. She married Rev. Reid 30 years ago, living in Huntingdon and then in Montreal. She is survived by her husband, and one daughter, Miss Alana of Montreal, one brother, Dr. H.H. Planche of Vancouver, and three sisters, Mrs. H. J. Scott, of Toronto, Mrs. R. I. Hamilton of Ottawa, and Mrs. Ronald Hilborn of Niagara on the lake Ontario. Funeral from the Joseph C. Wray funeral home on Mountains Street, interred in the Protestant Cemetery at Huntingdon Québec.

02-05-1940 Catherine Boucher, wife of the late Joseph Vinet, died at Huntingdon Québec, age 93 years. She was mother of Mrs. J. H. Demers of Huntingdon.

01-30-1940 Wilford Lemieux, former police chief of Valleyfield four many years, died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, age 65 years. He is survived by his widow, the former Reid Louise Perras, three sons, corporal James Lemieux, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police post at Sherbrooke Québec, Lionel and Maurice Lemieux of Valleyfield, and three daughters, Mrs. Lionel Leduc, and Misses Marie Martha and Armande Lemieux also of Valleyfield. Funeral service was held in the Valleyfield Cathedral.

02-03-1940 Mrs. Annie Erskine, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. W. Sample, in Covey Hill Québec. She was in her 98th year. Mrs. Erskine was the former Miss. Annie J. Cooper, eldest daughter of the late Robert Cooper and his wife, Elizabeth Howe, who came from County Tyrone, Ireland, and resided at Anderson's Corners, in Hinchinbrooke for some years, when all the family accept Mrs. Erskine, moved to Don Hill ON. ( Dawn Mills ) The death of her parents was attended by an unusual circumstance. Mr. Cooper died on a Friday morning, at the ripe old age of 80 years. On Saturday evening his wife breathed her last at age 75. On Sunday their joint funeral service was held in the Thamesville Anglican Church, and they were buried in the same grave. The local paper which recorded the above events, stated that both Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were greatly respected by all who knew them. Of their large family, Mrs. Erskine was the last survivor, one other, her brother Albert of Detroit, survived until 1938. Her marriage to the late George Erskine of Franklin Township took place in 1865, and they had a family of five sons and one daughter. Mr. Erskine predeceased his wife by 20 years, her death being on the anniversary of her husband's burial. Her mother had to endure the anguish of suspense in connection with the death of her third son, Herbert. He was employed at Lowell MA, and left there with a friend and joined the Klondike goldrush, nothing further could be learned and he was believed to have been drowned on the journey north as was so many others. Mrs. Erskine had also to mourn the death of three other sons, William, who died in Glen Gardner NJ, and Fred and Albert who died, the former at the old Franklin Homestead, the latter very suddenly last August at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sample, where he and his mother both spent their last days. Mrs. Erskine is survived by her youngest son, Ernest, of Brooklet Québec, by her only daughter, Mrs. E. W. Sample of Covey Hill, and by six grandchildren namely, her son William's three children in Glen Gardner N.J., and Ernest's three children at Brooklet. Mrs. Erskine's parents were Anglican's and at the age of 16, she was confirmed by the bishop of Montreal. On her marriage she became a member of the Rockburn Presbyterian Church. The funeral service was held in the home on Monday afternoon, service was conducted by Mr. Troyer. Interred in the Hillside Cemetery at Rennie's church.

02-01-1940 Samuel McCance, a native of Havelock Québec, died at Santa Rosa CA, age 83 years. He was a brother to James McCance of Hemmingford Québec, and George McCance of Little River, four sisters, Mrs. Jesse Blair of Maine, Mrs. Jenny Pearl of Massachusetts, Mrs. Margaret Montgomerie of San Francisco, and Mrs. Belle Gordon of Canada, and two grandchildren, Florida McCance of Santa Rosa, and Donn Leroy Ingram of Berkeley. Mr. McCance was born at Havelock and when a young man went to CA. He was married in 1900. His widow survives. Mr. McCance lived in Santa Rosa for 28 years, and was father and James and Zenas McCance, Mrs. Francis Rallou of Santa Rosa high school, and Mrs. Mabel Ingram of Berkeley.

(Not dated) Miss Minta Cook, died, and the funeral held on Friday afternoon at the Earlville Methodist Church. The service was conducted by her pastor Rev. Mr. Webster of Chateauguay NY. Her remains where committed to a vault at Chateauguay, the remains placed in the Sandy Knoll Cemetery.

01-31-1940 John Albert Brown, died at Huntingdon Québec, age about 74 years he was a son of the late John Brown of Huntingdon, a native of Scotland and of his wife, Elizabeth McNeil of Ormstown. His only brother James, predeceased him eight years ago. But sympathy is felt for his widow so well known here since her childhood as Eva Lewis. He went to the United States many years ago and their engaged in Elko County. He is survived by one brother, Robert Arthur of sparks NV, and one brother and two sisters, Alex, Arthur, Miss Margaret Arthur, and Mrs. Mary Burnell, of Rockburn, also several nieces and nephew's. Interred in Mountain View Cemetery, in Reno NV. Service conducted by the Rev. S. Carl Schmidt.

02-14-1940 Wilson Taylor Hayes, beloved husband of Una M. Miller, and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hayes, died suddenly at Hemmingford Québec. Age 58 years. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Miss Ruby Hayes, and one son, Mr. Richard Hayes. Funeral service held in the United Church on Saturday afternoon, service conducted by the Rev. C. Dean.

02-21-1940 Samuel H. Henderson, husband of the late Sarah Gamble, died at the residents of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph Gamble, at Herdman Québec. Age, in his 90th year. He was son of the late William Henderson, and his wife, Elizabeth Hart. The last survivor of a family of 5. He was born in March 1850, on the farm now owned by Mr. Roy Simpson, where he lived until a number of years after his marriage to Sarah A Gamble, when he moved to Herdman, and was a successful merchant in the house now owned by Mr. Verden Liggett, for about 15 years. He left Herdman in 1903 and went to Ottawa Ontario. In 1916 he moved to Chateauguay New York, where he lived until the death of his wife in 1928. He then made his home with his daughter and son of law, Rev. and Mrs. A.V. Patton, at Castleton New York, until five years ago, when he came to stay with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph Gamble, by whom he was well cared for. He fought in the Fenian Raid, and was about the last member of the 50th battalion of the Canadian militia, being at one time captain of the battalion. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. A V. Patton, and Rev. Luther Patton, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Emma Gamble, also a number of nephews and nieces. Mr. Henderson had been in failing health most of the winter, but two weeks ago his condition became worse, with a gradual failing each day until death claim him, when he was both prepared and willing to leave this life, which he had been privileged to enjoy almost 90 years. Funeral service was held in Rennie's United Church on Friday afternoon and was attended by relatives and friends of Herdman, Montreal, Howick, Franklin, Huntingdon, and Chateauguay New York, service conducted by the Rev. J. R. Dey of Bangor, also Rev. A V. Patton, and Rev. J. H. Woodside. Interred at Hillside Cemetery.

02-20-1940 Ellen Christina McGregor, widow of James Swail, and sister of Mrs. Norman McCrimmon of Huntingdon, daughter of James McGregor and his wife Janet Morrison of Huntingdon Québec. She was born at Cote St. George's Québec, on May 28, 1862. She was educated in the Huntingdon Academy, died at her late residents, 4690 Westmont Avenue, Montreal. Funeral from the home, interred in Mount Royal Cemetery. She was married to James Swail in 1886. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Arthur R. Walker of Newburgh OR, a son, J. Austin Swail of Hempstead, four sisters, Mrs. A. G. Snowden, and Mrs. Jesse M. McGregor of Montreal, Mrs. Norman McCrimmon of Huntingdon, and Mrs. Frank Hearst of Perry sound ON, and a brother, Lieut. Col. J. A. McGregor of Calgary AB, also one granddaughter and five grandsons.

02-21-1940 Joseph Elizee Bouchard, died at the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal Québec, age 44 years, surviving are his widow, (Antoinette Lefebvre), formerly of Huntingdon, three sons, Ernest, Robert and Paul. Mr. Bouchard was agent of the Canadian National and Central Vermont Railway terminals at Rouses Point NY. Funeral services were held at Fort Covington NY, service conducted by the Rev. Father Lauson, parish priest.

02-24-1940 Fred McCartney, died at his home in Dewittville Québec, after a long and lingering illness of over several months. He was born in Georgetown Québec, the only child of the late Alexander McCartney and Dell-Bell Black of Glengarry. Mr. McCartney kept Store in Kensington for several years before moving to Ormstown, where he worked as a butcher. He was united in marriage with Pearl Muir Tannahill in July, 1910, at Kensington. To this union six daughters and one son where born. Helen of Howick Québec, Reitta, Linda, Meryl and Lea of Montreal, Ruth and Burton at home, besides his widow and family, Mr. McCartney leaves an aunt, and several cousins to mourn his loss.

02-20-1940 To Mr. and Mrs. George H. Lennox, (nee Berthe Leblanc of Huntingdon), at the Barrie Memorial Hospital in Ormstown Québec, a daughter.

02-16-1940 Arsene Bouchard, formerly of St Remi Québec, died at Mooers N.Y., age 88 years. Mr. Bouchard was the sixth child of a large family, son of Lewis and Lucia Bouchard, born in St. Remi on December 27, 1852, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church for about 60 years. In 1935 she again sailed for Canada at the age 80 to take a permanent residence with her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. S. D. Wylie, a daughter, Miss Laura Jean Wylie, and two sisters, Mrs. H.A, Thom, and Mrs. J. M. Silliman, all residents of Westmont except Mrs. Silliman whose home is in Kingston Ontario. Mr. Wylie's three children are by former marriages. Funeral service was conducted by the Rev. W. Orr Mulligan, of Melville Presbyterian Church. Interred in Mount Royal Cemetery.

She was the daughter of James Pringle and Mary Hampson, she was born at Athelstan Québec, and spent the early years of her life their, and in New York State. In 1893 she came to Franklin Center Québec, establishing a millinery and dressmaking business there. She married Frank E. Young, Merchant, in 1895, and one son, Harold, was born to this union. Both husband and son have been dead for several years, early in 1936 Mrs. Young was taken to a nursing home in Montreal. She is survived by four sisters, and three brothers, all living in the United States, and several nieces and nephew's, among them, being Mrs. J. F. Manning of Franklin Center, and her two brothers, Arnold and Harold McGugan. Funeral was held in the Franklin Center United Church on Tuesday, Mar. 19th, service conducted by the Rev. T. F. Duncan.

Brothers and sisters were, Mary Jane Dixon, Claudia, Mrs. Fred Goundry, who still survives, Martha, died in infancy, two boys, William and Jim Dixon, also Annie Dixon, who taught school for years. Mr. and Mrs. James Ferns are about 56 years married. To this union were born three sons and 5 daughters, Herbert, John and James, Mattie, Mrs. M. B. Harvey, Annabelle, Mrs. Arthur Elliott, Mary, Mrs. George Beattie, Queenie, Mrs. John Pringle, and Margaret, who predeceased her parents 21 years ago. Funeral service was held in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, service conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. B. McLean, D. D.

04-02-1940 Archie Bruce, Passed away peacefully after an illness of a month with pneumonia in Dewittville Québec. His cousin, Mrs. Ketch, cared for him at the last. He was the eldest son of the late Robert Bruce and Mary Ann Clark. He was born in 1864. He was united in marriage with Margaret Black of Huntingdon. To this union three children were born, Robert, Lawrence and one daughter, Flossie, Lawrence and Flossie predeceased their father a few years ago, also Mrs. Bruce. About 17 years ago, Mr. Bruce was again united in marriage with Edna Bonhower of Williamstown. The funeral was held in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Huntingdon Québec, service conducted by the Rev. J. B. McLean, D. D.

03-30-1940 George Cowan, beloved husband of the late Janet Elliott, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Wesley Dunn at St. Remi Québec, age 94 years. He was a native of Havelock Québec, his wife, Janet Elliott, died on January 19th, 1919. He was eldest son of the late William Cowan, and his wife, Mary Wilson. He leaves to mourn, two daughters, Annie, Mrs. Anthony Smail, and Susie, Mrs. Wesley Dunn of St. Remi, two grandchildren, Mrs. Gerald Sweeney of Waterbury VT, and Gordon Smail of St. Remi, two great-grandchildren, Joyce and Janice Sweeney, and one brother, David, of Hemmingford. Two children, Jesse and Lucy died in infancy. The funeral will be held in the Russeltown United Church, as soon as the roads are passable. The remains are resting at Reids Funeral Parlors at St. Remi.

Her later years were spent in Seattle WA, she was predeceased by her husband and two children, Elizabeth White and George Archibald. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. John Darby of Los Angeles CA, Miss Jean Robertson of Seattle WA, Mrs. C.S. Lamb, Mrs. M. McRae of Minneapolis MN, Mrs. W. W. After coming to Bakersfield in 1904, she managed the Boston Hotel for eight years. Funeral services were held in St. Francis Church, service conducted by the Rev. 05-22-1940 Rev. C.E. Jeakins, Dean of Huron and Rector of St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in London ON, collapsed and died at the home of a parishioner, age 62 years. He had served previously at Wingham, Clinton, and Branford ON, and was chaplain of the 58 Battalion of the Canadian expeditionary force in the first war. He was a native of England, son of Rev. T. B. Jeakins, a retired Anglican clergyman now living in Montreal. He was Rector of St. John's Anglican Church in Huntingdon Québec from 1904 to 1908.

She was united in marriage with Mr. Robert H. Feek, of Newington ON in 1890. To this union a son was born, James Feek, who resides at Newington ON and a daughter, Mrs. Clifford Wilkes, of Vernon ON. After the death of Mr. Feek in 1924, Mrs. Tait took up residence in Cornwall ON. In 1932 she reunited in marriage with Mr. George J. Tait of St. Louis de Gonzaque Québec, who predeceased her two years ago. Besides her son and daughter, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Lowe of Pembroke Ontario, two brothers, Joseph Kidd of Rankin, ON, and George Kidd of Nipissing Ontario, also five grandchildren survive her. She was stricken with a hemorrhage shortly after she arrived at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mary Graham in Elgin Township Québec, to spend the remainder of the week. She was youngest child of a family of eight children, Mrs. Hampson was the daughter of the late William and Catherine Hunter Crawford of Elgin Township. She was born August 28, 1869. After her marriage in Montreal on Jun. 01, 1911, to the late William Hampson, of North Burke New York, Mrs. Hampson lived in North Burke where her husband operated a farm. Mr. Hampson died 16 years ago. Surviving Mrs. Hampson are her sister, Mrs. Mary Graham of Elgin Township, and several nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held at Mrs. Hampson's late home in North Burke Saturday afternoon at 1.30, and at 2 o'clock at the North Burke Presbyterian Church, service conducted by the Rev. Harold W. Fildey, pastor. Burial was made in the Presbyterian Cemetery in North Burke New York.

He was born in Herdman Québec, the only child of the late James Gamble Jr. and his wife Sarah Robson. He lived on the Homestead with his parents about a year or so when an epidemic of black diphtheria broke out. His father became a victim of it, and died within three days. His mother later moved to Lowell MA where he received his education. He leaves to mourn his widow and one son, Harvey Jr.

10-17-1940 Mrs. Eliza A. Stewart, died at Syracuse NY. She was a native of Hemmingford Québec, and a resident of Champlain New York for many years, age 67 years. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilson of Hemmingford Québec, and was born in the village on September 02, 1873. She attended the Hemmingford school and later married the late Mr. John R. Stewart of Champlain New York, 47 years ago. He passed away in 1923, and sometime later, Mrs. Stewart went to Syracuse NY to make her home. She is survived by four sons, Foster and Theodore of Syracuse NY, Clarence and Russell of Buffalo New York, and four daughters, Mrs. Irvin Robinson of Champlain New York, Esther and Rachael Stewart of Syracuse NY, and Mrs. Robert Allen, (Ruth) of Los Angeles California. Two sons and two daughter's predeceased their mother, there are also 12 grandchildren. She was a member of the Champlain Methodist Church. The remains were brought to Champlain New York, service being held at the Methodist Church, service conducted by the Rev. Paul Thomas, pastor of the Church. The interment was made in Glenwood Cemetery.

11-06-1940 John E. Doria, a highly respected resident of the town of Trout River, passed away Thursday noon at his home there. He had been seriously sick for the past three months with heart trouble. He was born in Elgin Township Québec, and was in his 59th year. He moved to Trout River when a young man and always resided in the vicinity. Fourteen years ago he married Agnes Coughlin, a former Malone girl, and a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Coughlin. Only two years ago while on a trip down state, Mrs. Doria was instantly killed in an automobile accident. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Whitbeck, of Clarksville New York, Mrs. Ed Jury, Mrs. Amy Doria, and Miss Pearl Doria, all of Springfield MA, and two brothers, Wallace Doria, of Chateauguay, and James Doria of Binghampton New York. Funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Union Church in Constable New York, service conducted by the Rev. Edward George. Burial was in the family plot in the Constable Cemetery.

10-29-1940 Mrs. Margaret Johnston McNeil, Died at the home of her son, Wesley, in Mooers Forks district of New York, age 94 years, she was a daughter of the late Robert Johnston and his wife, who emigrated from Ireland to the province of Québec, where Mrs. McNeill was born and attended school. In 1883 she married John McNeill of Mooers, she was a member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. McNeill's husband predeceased her. She is survived by one son, Wesley, and by four grandchildren, Russell McNeill of Ellenburg Depot, and Glenn, Ruth and Harry McNeill of Mooers Forks. Several cousins reside in Huntingdon County. Also surviving are two brothers, Pte Colin Cameron of the Royal Rifles of Canada, now stationed in Sussex NB, Gordon Cameron of Huntingdon, and one sister, Miss Shirley Cameron of Montreal. Private Cameron is a grandson of the late W. D. Cameron, formerly of Dewittville Québec, and a nephew of Mrs. Allen Dawson, Huntingdon Québec.

Going west when a young man and spent most of his life in Idaho and Montana where he owned and operated ranches. He never married and returned from the west a year ago. 12-22-1940 Mildred Tait, beloved wife of George MacRae of Lancaster Ontario, and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Tait, died at Cornwall Ontario.

12-23-1940 Susan Logan, wife of the late John Mills, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal Québec, in her 70th year. She leaves to mourn, two sons, Leslie and Clifford. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Presbyterian Church in Ormstown Québec, service conducted by the Rev. E. J. White.
