Henry Abbott, B.C.L., Q.C., advocate of  Montreal, Que., was born there October 5th, 1857.  He is a son of Sir John Caldwell Abbott, and Mary M. Bethune, daughter of  the late Rev. John Bethune, Dean of Montreal. 

Mr. Abbott was educated at the High School and St. John's School, Montreal, Bishop College School, Lennoxville, Quebec, and Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ontario.  He obtained his B.C.L., at McGill University, March 30, 1878, was admitted to the Bar, January 11, 1879, and made Q.C. February 18th, 1887.  Mr. Abbott was appointed professor of Commercial Law in McGill University in 1890, and has often appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada and the Privy Council in England.

He has also taken an interest in military matters, having served in the Victoria Rifles from 1878 to 1884; was 2nd lieutenant in 1880, 1st lieutenant in 1881, captain in 1883; he left the regiment in 1884, but rejoined as 2nd lieutenant on the outbreak of the Riel rebellion, 1885.  In religion Mr. Abbott is Episcopalian. In politics a Conservative.  He was married May 17th, 1882, to Jane Ratcliffe Liddell, who died in 1883.
