These brothers were born in Bromley Kent, England and came to Canada with their family in 1903. They served with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces in WWI and signed up in Ottawa on May 1(Arthur) & 28(Harold), 1915. The brothers sailed for Bermuda on August 8th, 1915 for basic training. They left Bermuda on May 29th, 1916 aboard the SS Grampian and arrived in Plymouth England on June 9th. They arrived Havre France the 13th & 14th of August, 1916. They died November 18th in the Battle of Ancre when the 87th bn, 38th bn. and some battalions from the 10th and 11th Brigades advanced across no mans land from the British Front line - Regina Trench to the German Front line - Desire Trench. Arthur's memorial is at the
Vimy Memorial in France.
There is a brass
tablet commemorating these two men as well as 60 other congregation
members who lost their lives in the great war which was at the Church
of the Ascension in
Montreal and is now in the Library which stands in its place.
