REFORD, Robert Wilson (19 August 1867, Montreal, Quebec - 15 November 1951, Montreal Quebec) Robert Wilson Reford was educated at Upper Canada College in Toronto and at Lincoln College in Sorel. In order to broaden his education before joining his father's shipping firm, the Robert Reford Company, he travelled to the Mediterranean in 1885, to Britain in 1887, and to France in 1888, perfecting his command of the French language. From 1889 to 1891, young Reford lived at Victoria British Columbia, immersing himself in the commercial life of the province. He assisted in running the affairs of the Mount Royal Milling and Manufacturing Company and acted as Ship's Agent for the firm's clipper ship Thermopylae, which brough rice from China. During these years of apprenticeship he used one of the new Kodak No.1 cameras to record the activities of himself and his friends, and to document the landscape and people of British Columbia. He continued his interest in photography as a member of the Montreal Camera Club in 1894. In 1892 Reford became the Reford Company's agent at Antwerp, Belgium, and later returned to Montreal to become the company's Secretary-Treasurer.
