PHOTOGRAPHERS
IN MONTREAL 1839-1950
Although
the Montreal GenWeb is dedicated to researching only ANGLO Montrealers,
an execption has been made with the Photographers section. The more we
can learn about all photographers who practiced in Montreal, the better
chance we all have of identifying our old family photographs.
THE NOTMAN
COLLECTION
Are any
of your Montreal family photographs signed NOTMAN or NOTMAN & SON?
If so, you're in luck. See that 6 or 7 digit number, in pencil, on the
back of the photo? Don't erase it! That number will be used to identify
who is in the photograph. Notman recorded and indexed all his portraits,
and the records from his Montreal studio have survived.
PHOTOGRAPHS
OF MONTREAL
Under
construction......trying to decide the best way to present these. I'm a
*collector*, as are many of my friends and associates. Here we present
to you some wonderful old photos of Montreal from our personal collections
as well as images kindly supplied by various Archives.
POSTCARDS
FROM MONTREAL
The first
decade of the 20th century was the 'Age of the Postcard'. Mail-delivery
was twice and sometimes three-times a day. It was better than e-mail! Photographers
and Publishers recorded anything and everything to produce on the fronts
of postcards. And the little notes written on the back by the senders give
us insight into life during that time. At no other time will we find a
better record of the history of our towns and cities.
IDENTIFIED
GROUP PHOTOS OF MONTREALERS
We all
have group photos in our family collections. Sometimes the names were embossed
below the photo, and sometimes a *wise* relative recorded the names of
everyone in the shot. Here are photos with everyone identified. Maybe you
have the same photo, but didn't know who the people were?
FORGOTTEN FACES
All those
unidentified photos in our old family albums! Maybe your ancestor is in
one of my family photos....or mine in yours? Let's post those forgotten
faces and see if we can learn who they were.
ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES WITH MONTREAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Archives
and Libraries preserve our past. There are dozens of large and small archives
in Montreal which house old photos of the city, but there are also many
collections in other parts of Canada, and in other parts of the world,
with Montreal photographs in their holdings. This is an attempt to list
those Archives and what Montreal photography they hold. Most of them will
make copies of these photos for a resonable fee. (Link will be up soon)
DATING
OLD PHOTOGRAPHS
Don't
know when that old photo was shot? Don't even know WHO is in it, to try
to try to match the age of the person to your family-tree records?! Type
of photograph, style of photography and fashion styles can help narrow
down the time-frame. (Link will be up soon)
