This GenWeb Project is based on the Canada and US GenWeb Projects, the purpose
of which is to create a global library for genealogy research on the Web.
In March and April of 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky
Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single
entry point on the Internet for all counties in Kentucky, where all collected
databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and
cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county,
they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the
collection of databases at the County level and generally oversee the contents
of the Web pages.
The same type of project now exists for every state in the U.S., as well
as many countries around the World, including Canada. The Québec GenWeb
Project was begun in 1998, and is modeled after the Canada GenWeb Project.
Our common goal is the collection and distribution of genealogical data on
the Web.
We welcome any contributions or suggestions relating to the GenWeb Project.
