The Vaudreuil-Soulanges GenWeb
project is based on the Canadian and American GenWeb projects, whose purpose of which is to create a
virtual library for genealogy research on the Web.
GenWeb
History
In March and April of 1996, a
group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database
Project (KCGDP). The idea was to provide a single entry point for all
Kentucky counties on the Internet, where all collected databases would be
gathered, indexed, and cross-linked; even if an
individual had lived in more than one county, he/she would be tracked in the
global index under every county. In addition, volunteers co-ordinated the
database collection at the County level and generally maintained the Web site
contents.
GenWeb Structure
Similar
projects now exists for
every U.S. state, as well as many other countries, including
Canada. The Vaudreuil-Soulanges project has begun in November 1999, and
is modeled after the Canada GenWeb project. Their common goal is to collect
and distribute genealogical data on the Web.
