John Jacob Beals was an early settler in the lower part of Ashton Township, Delaware County, Pa. He lived near Chester Creek which emptied into the Delaware River at the city of Chester. John Beals was married to Mary, the daughter of William Clayton, Sr., in 1682. They were members of the Friends' Church and so far as is known their children were. Their boys' names were John, William, and Jacob; the girls' Mary and Patience. The family after some time removed to Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1726.

William Clayton, father of Mary Clayton Beals, arrived with his family in the ship Kent from London in company with certain commissioners sent out by the proprietors of New Jersey to purchase lands, etc., in 1678-79 (March). He purchased the share of Hans Olson, one of the original grants of Marcus Hook (near the present city of Chester, Pa.) and settled there. As a Quaker he was an active and consistent member of Governor Markham's council and also that part of the proprietary after his arrival, while as the same time he served as one of the justices of the court of Upland County and subsequently for that of Chester County, presiding at the first court held in Pennsylvania under the proprietary government.

Now, as I am a descendant of Jacob, the youngest son of John, I will trace his prosperity. It has not been ascertained by me that Jacob Beals' wife's maiden name was, but he married and lived in Pennsylvania all his life. Jacob Beals has two sons, Isaac and Daniel. There is no record of any (other) children. Daniel married and lived some time in Pennsylvania and later he moved to Winchester, Virginia, where his son Jacob (my Grandfather) was born, April 15, 1787. There he raised and grew to manhood. Later he emigrated to Greene County, Tennessee. There he married and settled on a farm about three miles from Rheatown on sinking creek. His first wife's maiden name was Ellis (a daughter of Ellis Ellis) by whom he had thirteen children, ten boys and three girls, Sarah, Mary, and Rebeccah. I will give the boys' names further on. His second wife's maiden name was ------------, by whom he had no children. She lived but a short time. His third wife's name was Keziah Perkins Lewis, by whom he had one child, Edith. He was a man of strong build and sturdy character, a member of the Friends' church, and was a prompt attender of the church twice a week, and a strict disciplinarian in his family. His last wife was a minister in the Friends' church. He lived to be 87 years, 11 months, 23 days old.

Isaac Beals, the son of Jacob, son of John was born in Pensylvania about the beginning of the Eighteenth Century and when grown moved to east Tennessee, Washington County, where he spent the remainder of his life. He married a girl who's maiden name was Hannah Cox. He was a farmer and a member of the Friends' Church. He lived to be 80 years old and died of cancer. His wife lived to be 97 years old.

Daniel Beals, son of Jacob, son of John was born in Pennsylvania and when a grown man and married he moved to Winchester, Va. There he lived and raised a large family. He was a farmer and a member of Friends' church.

James F. Beals, son of Joseph, son of Abner, son of Daniel, son of Jacob, son of John was born in Greene County, Tennessee in Mat (sic), 1839. He worked on a farm when a boy and young man, and later he went to school and prepared himself to teach school. He followed schoolteaching for a few years; subsequently married and followed farming some. He then went into the mercantile business. He was elected a member of the State Legislature one term and also was a government revenue collector for some years. He was a railroad contractor for some time and was very active as a business man in various kinds of business.

He is now (or was two years ago) judge of the county court of Blount county. That was 1908. He has been one of he leading members in the Friends' church at Friendsville, Tenn. His first wife's maiden name was ---------------. His second wife's maiden name was Jones, daughter of Rufus Jones.

He was very anxious to educate his children and sent two of his girls to Guilford College, N. Carolina. He married Cerena Pierce, daughter of Thomas Pierce of Greene County, Tenn. He accumulated some property, owned about 200 acres of land, and lived well. He was the smallest one of 9 brothers and worked in the house doing house work until he was 17 years old, when he asked to be released from housework so that he could go on the farm and learn outdoor work. So his parents gave him leave to go provided he would hire a girl to work in his place, which he did and afterward married the same girl. He died at the age of 50 years. I think his death was partly caused by the aggravation, hardships, and exposures during the Civil War. He was the father of a large family.
