researching: CANNON; PORTEUS; HOLLINGSWORTH; CREW OR CREM, WRIGHT; McKAY; ROBINSON; CALVERT; REE

Looking for information on ancestors of Dr.Horace Franklin Cannon b. 1804 in Greenboro, N.C. to Samuel Cannon and Mary Porteus. Horace Cannon d. 1851 Annapolis, Parke County, Indiana, He married Guilema Hollingsworth daughter of Issac Hollingsworth and his wife Hannah Crem ( or Crew)11 Dec 1828 in Marborough , Randolph . NC. I have much information on Guilema's family but almost none on his. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated and I am more than willing to share information I have on allied lines. Here is a brief overview of what I know.: Guilema was disowned 12/11/1828 for marrying out of unity but later she and Horace were both accepted back into the fold. . She is recieved back into membership 10/29/31 at New Garden MM. Horace and sons Elisha and Isaac are received there 10/26/1833. They were also parents of , among others, William Porteus Cannon (our ancestor) and Joseph Guerney Cannon , Speaker of the House of Representatives). Dover, MM minutes, Guilford Co. 2/20/1819 indicate parentage and names of Guliema's brothers and Sisters and also her request on 2/21/1824 for a certificate to Marlboro MM, Randolph Co., N.C. Information I have on Dr. Cannon indicates he was raised in the Quaker faith .. May have been orphaned and reared by a Quaker family. Apparently was not practicing the faith when he and Guilema were married but later became a respected Quaker.. He was one of One of the founders of Guiliford College, Guiliford, N.C. Later moved to what is now Annapolis, Parke Co. Indiana. The family is recorded also in the following monthly meeting minutes: 1831- 1840 New Garden, Guiliford Co, N.C. MM; White Lick MM, Morgan Co. Ind.1841-1849; 1842 - 1845 Bloomfield- Bloomindale MM, Parke Co. Ind. Their son William m. Anna Mary Wamslay 24 July 1864 in Illinois.. William and Anna's daugher Ann Mildred Cannon m. Gratz William Helm 24 Jul 1898 in Wisconsin. Indiana. Guilema's grandparents were Joseph Hollingsworth, and 2nd wife Margaret Wright Hammer. Gr grandparents were George Hollingsworth and Hannah McKay. His father Abraham m. Ann Robinson, dau of George Robinson and his wife Ann.. Can't go any further on her line. Abraham's father was Thomas who married Margaret.. last name might have been Calvert. Thomas was the child of Valentine and his first wife Ann Ree, who died in Ireland. Valentine is buried at the Newark Burial grounds which he donated for that purpose. Please email me if you can help with this line or if you are also researching it or allied families. --------------------------------------------------

I see questions on Kansas Friends. My ggrandmother lived in Paola, Kansas during 1898-1904. She, we believe, came from elsewhere. I am having difficulties with records either not being available or there at all. I am wondering if any of you have seen any reference to an Ada Deweese prior to those dates in any of your quaker records. She married Jacob Senate and died in her early twenties leaving my grandmother to be raised by her father and Senate relatives. She never knew Ada's family. She was told her name was Ada Belle or Bell Deweese. The probate I have found that might be her is Addie H. Senate. It is not available yet so I am not sure. Just hoping someone may have noticed the name in records. My grandmother was not raised quaker. Thanks. LInda Hoffman --------------------------------------------------

According to various sources, he had 9 children by two spouses: Mary Lacey (Lacy) and Hannah Hughes. I would like verification on the children and their mothers. Additionally, his obituary in the June 19, 1782 Pennsylvania Gazette mentioned that he was "A guardian to the orphan and the widow" I wasn't sure if that was just a compliment or whether he actually was a guardian to an orphan. Looking for information on David Lewis who I believe was a Quaker before joining the Baptist Church of the Greater Valley in Devon, PA, then moving to the Tulpehocken Baptist Church near Reading, PA. Earliest know date for him is 1736 when he received a warrant for land in what is now Berks Co., Cumru Township (was Lancaster Co. at that time). He also received a warrant for land nearby a year earlier, but those records cannot be found. Died 1754 in Berks Co., leaving a wife Elenor, and son William as executors, and Nathan, a minor, and Hannah, also minor. Please contact me if anyone has a clue.

I am searching for the parents of John and wife Anna Unknown who were living in Stokes Co, NC in 1798 when their only son David was born. They also had nine daughters. Although I cannot find evidence that John and Anna were Quakers, all of their ten children married Quakers. Most of this family moved to Wayne and Henry Co's,IN in the early 1800's. David's first wife, the mother of all his children was Sarah Pearson. From David my Quaker line continues as follows: John Pearson Palmer who married Hannah Lewellan Ratcliff, William Irva Palmer who married Harriett Louisa Callahan, Ernest Orville Palmer who married Julia Etta Burcham, Forest William Palmer who married LaVancha Roulette (my parents), Monica Palmer who married Edwin Gregg Dean, Jr. in 1948 in Whittier, California and are members of Whittier Monthly Meeting. --------------------------------------------------

Searching for DAVID LEWIS family who might have been a Quaker before joining Baptist Church of the Greater Valley, Devon, PA.,and transferring to Tulpehocken Baptist Church in abt 1739. In 1735 & 1736, he received warrants for land in Cumru Twnshp, Berks Co. (but at that time it was part of LancasterCo.). He died in 1754, and will mentions wife Eleanor, son William (21+), minor son Nathan (my ancestor), and daughter Hannah. Only know about Nathan whose family eventually went to Indiana. He lived in area where there were many Quaker families, and a Quaker witnessed his will. Research has uncovered a David Lewis, son of Lewis Lewis,a Quaker. Our family is believed to have come from Wales, and there were Welsh Baptists as well as Quakers who came over in late 1600's and 1700's. Would really appreciate help with a possible connection, and printed information about Welsh Baptists. Anything! Dorothy Lewis Reed --------------------------------------------------

Have you heard of a book called "The Sufferings of the People Called Quakers, 1650-1689, by Joseph Besse. A fellow "Haskett" researcher told me that in Vol.2,pg.77, 83,84 or pg. 34?, there was reference to "Thomas Haskett" Can anyone look these pages up for me to tell me what it says about Thomas Haskett?? This person rented the microfishe but was having a hard time reading it. Thomas Haskett/Hesketh was born abt. 1607-12 in England & was married to Margery Johnson. One of their children named Anthony came to America by 1689 with son Anthony & settled in the Carolinas. This info is from fellow researchers info. & may or may not be entirely true. One of them seems to think that Thomas left England with son Anthony & grandson (because of harassement of Quakers) and Thomas could be the one referred to in the book by Besse. All help appreciated.
